Young Ted is delighted with his new gumboots, but at bedtime he reluctantly leaves them at the back door, lined up beside his parents' boots.
Young Luke, a pukeko chick, walks past, sees them and commandeers them. Proudly he stomps across the farm in them, past the cow and the bull then the young farm dog who tells them that Ted will be up soon and will need his boots. But Luke the Pook finds himself stuck in a cowpat.
I'm stuck, I'm stuck Stuck in cow muck. Can you help me, Dan the Duck?
But Dan the Duck is much too small. Eventually Mrs Moo rescues Luke from his sticky predicament.
I'll get you out, but home you must go. Return Ted's boots, and don't go slow.
Ted is delighted to see his shiny boots in the morning, none the wiser for their nighttime wanderings.
Illustrator Kat Mereweather has used differing techniques, with some pages being full colour while others have a circle of colour in the middle of the mostly white page and others continue the white background with a series of smaller colour illustrations such as Luke dancing through puddles to clean the boots. The contrasts work well – she can focus on the particular like Taranaki/Mount Egmont or a cowpat or deliver a wide landscape view of the farm.
While writers of children's stories are taught to avoid any attempt to moralise, in this case the concluding lesson is cheeky and fun. Youngsters will enjoy the joke.
Luke the Pook (a baby pukeko) finds himself in a sticky situation while wearing 'borrowed' Red Band gumboots. My kids loved this easy rhyming book, it is great to read out loud and has a very cheeky twist at the end; very Kiwi! What kid doesn't love gumboots and any mention of poo is always very popular. Clever and cute illustrations by Kat Merewether.
