Roni and Gram head to Ireland to inspect an open rift beneath an Abbey church. Just another day closing universes for the Parallel Society, but an exciting day for Roni. It’s a chance for her to get out of the library and into the real world. It’s a chance to spread her wings a little more.
But something is alive inside that rift -- something that wants to get out. The Abbey nuns are convinced the rift is a conduit to Heaven, and the thing inside is an angel. But Gram harbors a secret about the rift angel, one that haunts her. And soon Roni will learn that the nuns have secrets of their own.
The lies and secrets would be plenty enough to deal with. But when the rift is breached and an angel set loose, Roni will wish she could be back in the underground library!
Stuart Jaffe is the madman behind the Nathan K thrillers, Max Porter paranormal-mystery series, The Malja Chronicles, The Bluesman series, and much more. He has written numerous short stories in Fantasy, SF, and Horror. He was also the co-host of The Eclectic Review (http://eclectic.libsyn.com) -- a podcast about science, art, and well, everything.
Stuart lives in rural North Carolina, and for those who keep count, the latest animal listing is as follows: one dog, two cats, one albino corn snake, three aquatic turtles, assorted fish, seven chickens, and a horse. Thankfully, the chickens and the horse do not live inside the house.
Here we are at the third book and one thing has remained constant: my feelings for Roni’s grandmother. Well, my feelings didn’t change much in this book, but I did get a better insight into her character. And, TBH, I’m still not sure whether I like her, and I really want to like her, but I still do find her very interesting. In this installment, we are taken on a journey to a rift that has been maintained by the Society for a long time. But forces are conspiring to open that rift wide, wide enough to let out creatures that don’t have the world’s best interests in mind. I quite enjoyed the ride, as I do with all the books I’ve read by this author. Great series if you’re into urban fantasy! Highly recommend!!
Roni & Gram are in Ireland to check on a rift. They find some of the books protectiing it are scattered. They must get the books put back and the rift must be closed. The nuns are against this as they say the rift is their conduit to heaven and an angel wants to get out and join them. Sully and Elliot are called to Ireland to help Roni and Gram. There is much more going on than they realize. Gram says the nuns are not to be trusted. They can be dangerous. Gram has a secret about the rift. Stuart keeps us in suspense as the story unfolds. Who is the girl in the rift? What are those purple globes? What is wrong with those nuns? How are they going to close the rift as it continues to get bigger and bigger? Come along on this roller coaster and follow the twists and turns. The best of the first 3 stories. I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. MKy opinion is entirely my own.
This is the 3rd installment in the Parallel Society series, and it just keeps getting better. Eventually Roni will find her lost memories and know what her past contains. For now she's a true and tried member of the society as she delves into the world of rifts and other universes. In this installment we get to hear a bit about Roni's mothers past as a child and what led to her mothers wayward ways. We see why Gram is so hard and so protective of Roni and get to see some real humanity from her.
Great story, can't wait for the next.
I was originally given a free or reduced copy of this book in exchange for an honest and impartial review. This has not influenced my review at all.
The characters all grow and evolve as Roni takes on more within the society. Action, intrigue, twists and turns all contribute to a story I didn't want to put down. A worthy addition to the saga of the Paranormal Society.
Good or evil ....what was it that actually exists in the rift beneath the Abbey
I continue to be so disappointed with Roni's self-centered competitiveness. She constantly disrespects her Gram, Elliott and Sully and their decades of experience. She thinks she knows better and never needs their warnings and this time she almost brings about the destruction of our world. I am totally amazed that Gram, Elliott and Sully let her remain in the Parallel Society for all the damage she causes but in the end they all worked together and barely manage to close the rift and destroy the maleovant evil beings that would have destroyed their world. It is a good story, but Roni needs to grow up, listen to her elders and quit being so selfish.
Stuart Jaffe has created a world that holds your interest and builds until you can't put it down. Roni is almost me when I was a young adult. Stubborn and impatient. But she gets the job done with the help of the rest of the team. It's a great read.
