To impress the girl he has a crush on, Kouichi (a high schooler) lets her use his address in a gay ad. Soon, a reply comes, and Kouichi finds himself meeting with the man he made a joke of, intending to reject him. But he was surprised to find out that the man is actually a teacher in his school! Hirokazu is a really nice man. He seemed so lonely that Kouichi just couldn’t find it in himself to hurt him. One date leads to another, and Kouichi falls for his teacher for real… the problem is, Hirokazu doesn’t know that Kouichi is a student at his workplace.
Recently, I’ve been exploring Japanese light novels, and this one from 2002 caught my attention. Sleeping Bunny is a short and straightforward story, and it turned out to be better than I expected.
The pacing is one of its strengths, fast, no unnecessary distractions, and straight to the point. The main story had a touching simplicity, tackling emotions in a way that feels both raw and relatable. However, I found the epilogue to be a bit drawn out compared to the rest of the story. That said, it also gave the novel a satisfying conclusion with a happy ending that made up for the slower pace.
As for the characters, Takahashi was endearing, though I couldn’t help but wish he’d grow out of being such a crybaby, just a little! But the real standout for me was Kakimoto, the ultimate “friend of the year.” Even as a side character, his loyalty and quiet support left a lasting impression. I’d love to have a friend like him.
A great pick for fans of school life student-teacher stories with a dash of romance.
Very cute short story about two people falling in love despite societal and family norms pressuring them. It has a forceful younger character, a lonely male teacher and love blossoming out of venturing into the unknown.
For the genre the story is very sweet, but that means that it has a scene of dubious consent thrown in (I wouldn't say it's rape, but it comes close). The forceful, dominant partner is actually the highschooler, while the teacher is painfully shy and gentle. Also, another warning regarding the lack of editing of the translation - here and there you can find grammar mistakes. I really liked the story because of the little moments and gestures. You can tell that each character is very unique and that they truly love each other. There isn't too much detail in the story. The details that are presented are exactly those that speak the loudest about them and their relationship.
I loved the whole story!! It's the classic BL romance anyone can get into, although I advice those you dont like the common "misunderstand leads to heartbreak" plot to be aware in advance this is something you are going to get here . A game with a letter... they lie to each other, they fall in love, they fight, they get together again. Short, sweet and a lovely happy ending.
I thought that this was a really short and sweet story. There were a lot of cute scenes, my favorite being the beach scene. The only real downside of this novel is that you don't get to see as much of their earliest interactions as I would have liked; I love watching two characters fall in love slowly. But overall it was a pretty nice read.
