4 Stars for Characters & Story Elements 3.5 Stars for Narration by JD Jackson (He could be great but narration is inconsistent & some of the character voices bleed into one another.) 2 Stars for Clunky POV Switches
Pros: - Really fun characters & interesting plot progression. While progression & development are still done in an awkward manner, it's still interesting enough to keep me engaged in the story. - The pacing is weird but I like that the writing, characters & story get better and richer in each book. - Fun twists to well used ideas/events/etc.
Cons/Distractions: - Joe is Russian? It is not at all believable & every time it comes up, it throws me out of the story. It's too late to change that part of the character history but I find cringe every time it comes up in the story. If books can have an accent, I would 100% stand by this series being American. Not Russian. - I put all of the clunky writing, transitions/lack of transitions & somewhat odd timing of the cool ideas to new author status. There's lots of cool elements in the series that get bogged down by inconsistencies that could be caught by beta readers/editors/etc. - While the add ons at the end of the book are kind of fun, I could skip them completely and be okay.
I have really enjoyed this series from the beginning but the fact that the manic character still thought he was in a game was grating on me and in the previous book I almost gave up on the series. I gave it one last Chance with this book and thank the gods the MC finally sees the light in Themis book. This addition to the series is probably the best so far and I cannot wait for the next.
I think I missed the second book in this series, so have to go back and read that one, but this one was a pretty nice addition to the series. I liked it, and the things revealed in it are interesting. The main character finds out things that will change how he plays the game, and that's always good for a shakeup. Interesting storyline, and one I'll probably continue to follow.
This is a summation of the three books thus far. I initially did not read this series because the cover art was rather creepy. However, my facebook litrpg group had some positive reviews, so I gave it a try. Joe is an elderly, terminally ill man who is about to die. His grandaughter has purchased a virtual reality pod in which he can pass his remaining days playing the video games he so loves. At the same time, there is a group of summoners across the Universe who are seeking a Champion to rescue the helpless and downtrodden. Joe and his A.I. (E.I.- evolving intelligence), are pulled into another reality which unbeknownst to them initially, is a magic reality. The E.I., Spooky Joy, turns into a psychologically eerie HAL-like persona who is a very difficult to tolerate. However, as Joe and his side-kick begin to build a community and undergo adventures and dungeon diving, the story begins to really open up. The prose is ponderous and staid-like reflecting Joe's personality. I hope he and Zoya get to find others to love on this new world. Look forward to next book. Minimal editing errors that do not greatly detract from reading experience.
Another top-notch fun book in this series. What I liked: Rule consistency throughout the book. The character may have thought outside the box, but he never thought outside of a consistent universe. Creative solutions. Even when our hero is accidentally given a superduper weapon, some plot element occurs that encourages him to bring a creative element into the fray, which continually draws the reader forward. Unfolding progression. It is almost as exciting for me as it must be for Joe to have the next spell revealed, or the next dungeon boss and related game theory revealed. What I didn't like: ... um let me think on that one. Ambivalent: Our author briefly introduced two new plot elements, and then dropped them never to be heard from again. This is very unusual for Kip's tight control of the story line, so I can only assume they will rear their beautiful little heads again in the next book.
I like the plot and goal this story has, but the implementation is very jarring. Sometimes it feels like I'm experiencing a fever dream, with how things turn out.
I don't know if I will pick up the sequel or not, but I'm sure
I really liked the flow of the series so far, everything is set up beforehand and has a payoff later in the series, and yet it isn't always obvious how it will be used. Kip Terrington does a great job of creating characters that are multi-faceted and interesting while also making the emotional situations and decisions believable. This series combines the fun of an adventure and fantasy tale with the fun of Culumbo and Encyclopedia Brown; You know that somehow the situation will be resolved, often in Joe's favor, but much of the fun is in how he does it, and how the UI interacts with these unexpected results.
I really enjoyed this story. Interesting premise and fun twists to the plot along the way. Clean with almost no swearing.
My only warning is that the author does dive into the topic of slaves who have been tortured. It's not horrific in detail but it is an adult level topic - not necessarily appropriate for all young advanced readers. However, because the topic is dealt with with care, it could be a good opportunity to open a discussion with someone (a child/teen) about the topic.
Mistakes: I think I might have found two, but I'm not sure since I was really engrossed in the story. Plot: I still think things are a little to easy for our two MC's, but the challenges are getting tougher and I'm starting to see some balance. Characters: I still like them. I think the Queen has improved. 9.5/10 and look forward to book four.
What can I say. I loved every minute of this book. It has Interesting characters, heros that are straight up good people, interesting fights, fun and original loot, humor and wit, no bad language and no sex. In short it is an incredibly good book and a definite 5 Star read.
I’ve read the first three books. I’m impatiently waiting for the fourth. These books have made me cry and laugh. It takes a great author to do that. I’m not going to give a summary with the details of the story - I hate spoilers. But if you’re into or interested in gamelit or litrpg I highly recommend this series.
This has been a fun series so far, and i keep wanting more of this particular story. This entry culminated where I expected, but not entirely HOW I expected - nice touch. And there were many places that had me laughing at the entices of the character (and once near tears).
I really enjoyed this book. I just wish the next one was written. It has been more than two years since this book was released. Because of that, I thought this series was a trilogy, but the story in this one sets up the series to have more books. I loved the series though. It was really fun and well worth the read.
The character development is something that I can relate with. Really enjoyed this series so far. I ended up reading the first 3 books in about 4 days. The only real issue I have is that it caused me a pretty severe lack of sleep. I just couldn't stop.
The story continues from the previous book. The castle gains more citizens. The dungeon is exploded. With a unique battle at the book end. Looking forward to the next book.
Yet another awesome installment of an epic series. You never know what’s gonna pop up or what the system will grab our of the ether. Love it and can’t wait for more
The series is getting better. There is a lot less repetition, (stats, etc.) and even less info dumping. The stories are good and it's an easy read. Should be enjoyable for almost everyone.
