My student, a first grader, read this book aloud to me today. She is usually a reluctant reader but she loved reading this! I requested her to read only the first story "Kipper's Talk-about Situations" but she liked the concept of this book so much that she asked me "May I read the rest too?" (The rest consisted of four more stories and she took 30 minutes to read them.) What is the 'concept'? The author requested the reader to guess or predict what happens next or to identify an item on the page. Importantly, this book supports the systematic synthetic phonics program (see, e.g., Letters and Sounds phonics phase 2 or Read Write Inc or Oxford Owls).
