Love is a song she sang from a cage

Rate this book
In her third book of poetry, Bianca Bowers explores the complexities of love and challenges the convention of monogamy. I think of Anthony and Cleopatra...epic, fated, tragic lovers that drank from love's cup but once. Only, I am no Cleopatra. I am Juliette, with her teenage desire; ambivalent about poison and war. Ruminating the one-love-fits-all theory, and toying with the concept of polyamory, the poetic voice travels from a starting point in which forbidden love poses a dilemma worthy of a Shakespearean-tragedy to a more indignant ending in which "our brains are slaveowners and love was never meant to be imprisoned."

‘Love Is a Song She Sang from a Cage’ is a poetry book which grapples with what sometimes feels like the impossibility of love. It was interesting to see how Bianca’s Film/Tv and Media Studies degree infiltrated into her writing – my A Level English teacher would call this the ‘inter - texuality’ of her writing! I found myself finding her imagery of music, film, and references to Shakespeare familiar and comforting but also original because I haven’t read a poetry which is both in depth and personal but also steps out to reference popular culture, with such ease.

Bianca’s imagery is sophisticated, considered and beautiful:

‘I longed to be those wounded words
that sibilated on her tongue’

and relatable:

‘I miss you
like I miss the sun
in Winter’.

I now want to read Bianca’s other books!

Strength and Resilience

Love is a Song She Sang From a Cage (LSSFC) is the second book of poetry by Bianca Bowers that I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed. The first was Death and Life.

In LSSFC, Bowers speaks of love and loss and strength and resilience. Each reading brings out another layer, another shadow, another meaning. Her words are fulcrums upon which she balances emotions.

Like Death and Life, LSSFC is a collection of poems I’ll read again and again.

From the moment I started reading "Love Is A Song She Sang From A Cage", I felt captivated by its elegant atmosphere.

Bianca Bowers uses beautifully the words drawing etherial and eternal images of love as if painting from a dream.

The imagery throughout the book has a magical quality that the readers cannot forget as snapshots of the poetic situations remain in their minds and hearts and are carried along when the reading is finished.

Author Bianca Bowers dives deep into emotions, her verse giving form to the longing with the passionate flame lovers have for one another.

The poetry book “Love Is A Song She Sang From A Cage” is romanticism in its purest artistic form, expressed by a very talented poet.

“Love Is A Song She Sang From A Cage” by author Bianca Bowers is an exquisite collection of poems, sung from the heart.

Cyberspace has given me the chance to discover amazing authors and books – indie authors or authors from small publishing houses all over the world.

I am not saying that every book and author I have encountered is a gem, but Bianca’s poetry certainly is – a song so exquisite, powerful and deep that I wanted to continue reading!

Ms Bowers’ poetry book is not simply a collection of single poems. It is a book that tells a story, taking the reader on an emotional journey.

The poetry book is symbolically divided into four sections: “Caged”, “Feathers”, “Songbird” and “Flight”, all featuring different faces of love.

In “Love Is A Song She Sang From A Cage” Ms Bowers is master of impersonations and conducts the reader through the sometimes conflicting emotional states of the lyrical persona. Her imagery is unexpected and at points surprising, consistent with the very personal and different ways people experience love.

I cannot select a single poem as a favourite, because I do like the book in its entirety, from the cover to the last poem. Speaking of the cover – I did find the design extremely interesting and evoking thoughts and feelings. It reminded me of an old and much used volume of precious poems that has endured the tests of time.

I must say that I am very happy to have encountered such a fine poet as Bianca Bowers! True lovers of poetry and all of you who are, have been or will be in love, believe me, you would not want to miss this excellent collection!
