There’s no proof, but that won’t stop her mother coming to town. Ariella can feel everything she’s worked for slipping away, her fledgling magic, and even worse, her new friendships.
With her duty looming, Ariella has a choice to make — stay and be caged by her destiny, or strike out and make her own way.
In this second prequel novella, join Ariella as she learns more about what it takes to become the Grace of Stars.

Hailey writes stories about love and magic (which are sometimes the same thing) from a comfy chair in Berlin. The cat keeps watch to make sure she’s doing it right.
If she’s not writing, you can probably find her reading under a pile of snacks, or, on the rare occasions she’s forced outdoors, trying to find the best burger in Berlin.
Part 2 of the Vale of Stars prequel is another fine piece of YA fantasy. The locations are lush and magical, the characters just the right balance of feisty and flawed.
Ariella (or "Elle" as she's starting to prefer), decides that the city-folk's scrutiny is too much for her. With her mother the Grace coming to town, she sets about leaving. Determined to find the destiny she's so far been denied and misinformed about, she travels to the forest to seek the Godstars for herself, by herself... Or so she thought.
While I did feel a little lost every so often when a term familiar to the characters but alien to me came up, it's a fantasy world awash with magical lore. A little more foreshadowing or earlier explanation of terms would be the only criticism I'd have of such a well-written YA fantasy. There's probably more going on than a novella can hold, and that's before we get to the implications of the current Grace's actions. Ariella's character arc, learning confidence even while staying vulnerable, makes this a great conclusion to the coming-of-age story behind what sounds to be an epic series. I'm looking forward to finding out more of the Vale and just what may lie beneath the machinations of those in power...
Another great mini-instalment. I'm going to have to continue with the series after this (sorry, bank account).
In which Elle binds another star, finds out how true her friends are, collects another cat, escapes her mother one out of two times, and learns to stop making excuses.
We learn more about the special world she lives in and the interesting creatures that share it.
The only thing I found a bit confusing is apparently Elle had already bound a star before this... I really don't remember that from the first book. What did I miss/forget?
