Hollywood Hearts #1

Just Like in the Movies

Rate this book
Second chances only happen in the movies, right?

Following in his starlet grandmother's footsteps, Micah West left for the bright lights of Hollywood right after high school. He's spent the last five years building a name for himself as a young and rising star and his career is definitely going places. When his grandmother passes away, Micah finally comes home again and he’s terrified. It’s the first time he’s set foot in Longwood since he wooed and won and dumped his high school sweetheart. And now he has to face his biggest critic—the man he still loves.

Lewellyn King's life fell apart the night Mike called him from L.A. to break off their engagement and it’s never quite recovered. The whole town is convinced he hates Micah, but Lew knows the truth—he never stopped loving the alpha he'd been getting ready to marry. When he meets Mike again at the funeral, old hopes and hurts flare back up, but neither man can deny the feelings that still run strong between them.

Mike wants to make it right. Lew wants the man he was promised. But real life can't be just like the movies. Can it?

An novel set in the Oceanport omegaverse.

I adore Ann Katrin Byrde and her Mercy Hills series but her Oceanport series just didn’t click with me. But I was determined, absolutely DETERMINED, to read this book. But alas, I don’t think Oceaport likes me very much.

This was definitely low angst and heaps of sweet moments. But sorry, it’s definitely its-me-not-you problem with this Oceanport series.

I'm a huge fan of second-chance romance, and nothing says "I need a second chance" like dumping your fiance via telephone call after you moved to Hollywood!. I did feel that Lew wasn't nearly bitter enough, but maybe some people would be able to forgive such an incredible betrayal faster than others, but Lew did make Micah work for his reconciliation and didn't just roll over after The Speech(tm), so I felt ultimately satisfied on that front. I wish that Micah's fans and Hollywood-star life had provided more of an obstacle for the young couple on their return to LA; Micah was so famous he was harassed for photographs in an airport bathroom, but the paparazzi and adoring fans seem to drop away in the second half of the book. I also wish we had gotten more drama in LA, like if the young Hollywood-star omega (whom I hope we get a book about, I love self-determined omegas!) had hit on Micah only to be rejected and then caused drama with Lew or something similar, but that's just because I love drama.

Four star book that gets five stars because there was no offensive heterosexuality shoved in my face. I hate that!

3.5 Stars. A slowburn, second-chance omegaverse small town romance. Hollywood actor Mike returns to his small home town to face the omega he jilted 5 years earlier for his career. Now he wishes desperately for second chance with the omega he never stopped loving. What I liked the most about this book was that there was a lot of anger and groveling. I feel second chance romances usually lack in the grovelling. Not this! The omega Lew was also a very likable character with strong feelings about fried chicken and a fiery attitude that demanded respect. I would've preferred just a skosh more drama and a little less delivery room. But all in all its a classic Byrde House romance.

Super sweet second chance romance. Ann-Katrin Byrde ties in movies and Hollywood to the plot, and it's clever and well done.

What's really special about Just Like in the Movies is John Solo's narration in the audio version. Taking advantage of the humor, as well as the emotion, Mr. Solo delivers an excellent performance.

Audio Review

Performance – 5
Story – 5
Overall – 5

Good low angst story; great audio performance.

I love second chance stories and Just Like in the Movies is a good one. It's the first book I've read by Ann-Katrin Byrde but I've listened to several books performed by John Solo. After listening to my first audiobook he narrated he quickly became one of my top five favorite performers.

Just Like in the Movies is an Alpha/Omega story with both female and male alphas and omegas and, of course, Mpreg. 😊 While omegas are looked at as subservient to alphas, Lew doesn't tolerate that. He has a job and can support himself; he doesn't need an alpha to take care of him. Mike knows he made a huge mistake when he dumped Lew in the most callous of ways several years ago but he has never forgotten him and is ready to make amends. Lew certainly doesn't make it easy for him.

This is a sweet story without a lot of angst. In fact, after one conflict was resolved I kind of expected another one to happen but it didn't and I was fine with that. I will definitely be reading more books from Ann-Katrin Byrde.

I won a copy of this audiobook from the author during a Facebook party but no review was required or requested.

Just Like the Movies is a standalone romance that set within the Oceanport Omegaverse. No knowledge of that series is needed to enjoy this book, but I highly recommend reading them all to fully enjoy this universe.

This is a second chance romance between the alpha who went to Hollywood to pursue his career while leaving his omega behind. However, although Lewellyn was left behind in Oceanport, he never forgot Micah. When they reconnect, both men will have to rebuild their trust with each other before they can move on to a deeper relationship. I thought this was a really sweet slowburn romance.

Just Like in the Movies is the first book in The Hollywood Hearts series by Ann-Katrin Byrde. It's a second chance romance that is sweet and perfect like the Oceanport Omegas series. It is a fun read' involving a Hollywood star Alpha who comes back home and realizes he made the biggest mistake of his life when he ended things with his high school sweetheart in the pursuit for fame. Lots of funny moments, sweet interactions, and all the feels. Llewellyn and Micah are great characters and their story is perfect.

Betrayed by your first and only love must be hard and heartbreaking, that was what happened to Lew. Thankfully he has a loving family, a great supports from Mike's parents and wise words from Mrs. Costner.

It was so hard to read when your eyes brimming with tears because Lew's pain was so palpable and what he have been through was too much. With huge efforts from Mike, he finally win Lew's heart and live happily together with adorable baby.

I was so invested in this for the angst but it just ended up getting a little repetitive and Lew took a really long time to grow on me. I understood his anger, but I really wanted to see the break-up itself because wow was his anger super prevalent. Plus Mike's fame kind of stopped being a plot point halfway through the book and I thought that was weird.

This is a sweet, lighthearted, low angst, second chance romance.

Entertaining and not very challenging, this is the kind of read you should choose when you need something cute and pleasing.

John Solo does a good job with the narration

Good story ... a bit slow, but full of the daily problems and aspirations of any young and immature couple. It was good they finally got their heads out of the behinds. It was unfortunate, that it took a pregnancy to move them forward.

Standard sweet mpreg Alpha/Omega story. Easy to listen to, but not a great deal going on beyond the expected. Read this when you don't want to think too much!

Narrated by John Solo - 4 stars. His voice definitely suits the omega...

A loving Alpha/omega story

I haven't read a lot of Alpha/omega books, but I loved this book from the beginning. The characters are engaging and a little bit flawed which makes them a delight. Definitely a Hallmark Happily ever after.
