Once Below a Time: Memories of Growing up in Rural Virginia at Midcentury

The bygone eras of our past gave rise to a generation with stories worth holding on to, taking place in a world that has since vanished from America, for better or for worse. Yet triumph and delight grow from unexpected sources. Once Below a Time is author Glynn Baugher's account of growing up poor in rural Virginia in the middle of the twentieth century, and it is a memoir of a vanished world. Full of social details and vignettes of the colorful characters in Glynn's early life, it portrays a world rich in specifics, deriving the universal from family particulars. Glynn carefully traces the contours of a fading way of life and fills his stories with vibrant personal narratives of his bucolic youthful days with family. Glynn's story is that of the unexpected-of surprise, triumph, and delight. Join him on his illuminating retrospective, where out of poverty and a primitive early education spring comedy, success, and erudition.

I loved this book. The descriptions made me feel as if I was right there in their mountain home/neighborhood . I grew up canning food also...and could appreciate all the work involved!
I feel so much of our newer generation has lost out on all of the outdoor freedom and recreation we experienced. I too spent my childhood entertaining myself with the simplest things and playing outdoor games with the neighborhood. Thanks for sharing your childhood memories...made me remember "the good old days".

I won this book through goodreads. Not my usual reading but I enjoyed it. Talks about growing up in Virginia in mid twentieth century. Says his family was poor but they were rich in other ways. The most important is his family. You can tell there was alot of love.
