Thomas Jefferson: American Humanist is the history of the interior life of Thomas Jefferson: what he read, what he thought, and how he felt about those things.

Jefferson was a deeply learned, intellectually ambitious, and reflective man who happened to live at a time when the nation (some might say the world) was ready for just such a man to contribute his considerable energy to shaping the course of history. This book is about only that: the impact of his intellectual work on the culture, politics, and education of his times and our own. Others have written extensively about his origins, his role in the American Revolution, his politics, and his family. This is about his soul, and only an academic in love with ideas and learning could have written it.

Indispensable for anyone who would like to know Jefferson and what he really meant by the simple phrases he wrote into the nation's founding documents.
