Soviet writer and artist, organizer of the rescue of the Dresden Art Gallery after the end of the Second World War.
Leonid Rabinovich worked as an artist at the Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater, volunteered for the war. He was captured, fled, reached Germany, and in April 1945 he was in Dresden with the rank of lieutenant. With a group of five soldiers, he found the burial place of the paintings of the Dresden Gallery and organized their rescue and evacuation (the events are described in the autobiographical story "Seven Days" (1958).
After the war he returned to Kiev and under the pseudonym Leonid Volynsky published a number of books, of which the most popular were books about artists addressed to youth: "House in the Sun" (1961, about Vincent Van Gogh), "Face of Time" (1962, about Russian artists- Peredvizhniki), The Green Tree of Life (1964, about the French Impressionists), and Pages of the Stone Chronicle (1967, about the masterpieces of Russian architecture).
