“Years ago, a thief stole my heart and brought it to life, and tonight a princess saved it.”
It's definitely the angstiest of the three books - no question. Priest's past is catching up to his present, Robbie wonders if he'll always be on the outside looking in, and Julien's struggles go beyond that of just his kitchen, alone. There is heartbreak and there is indecision, there are unprecedented dangers to the heart, soul, and mind. 'You don’t get to choose who you give your heart to. It decides for you.' But, what you can count on is that sometimes things do work best in threes rather than pairs, and that is what all three men have to face if their love truly can stand whatever challenges threaten to tear them apart. 💔💔
I'm glad I got to know why Robbie was so upset with Priest's revelation - something that troubled me last, and one of the things I pointed out in my previous review. And the reasoning - felt justified; the distancing from Julien and Priest - rightfully so. Faith, trust…love? You’re right to protect them. You’re right to keep them close and think about them.' 😔 Winning back Robbie's trust - heartfelt and sincere. The outcome of said reveal - kinda ill-timed and oddly-placed, but considering Priest's past, itself, this was a necessary evil that had to be put out, in order for him to move on to greener pastures. And the only way to do that was really confront it head-on. 💘💘
“It took the love of someone truly unselfish to teach me how to fully understand another. First you have to push aside your wants, and then you have to listen to their needs.”
It was not my favorite of the three, but I still did feel this was the proverbial nail on the coffin for them to understand their place in this unique dynamic and how together they complete one another and how much open honest communication was still needed in order for them to work. It was sweet to see how much they cared - 'both captivating in their beauty and frightening in their intensity', nothing was going to stop them from showing Robbie how special he was. And, I mean, nothing! 😆 The lengths they went through to not quite earn his forgiveness, but to prove how deeply indebted and devoted they were to him - never to misplace their affection for him or make him feel that he was not worthy of their time - how they urged him to not hide what he was truly feeling. 'You opened your heart to me, princesse, and now I give mine to you.' As much as Robbie definitely was feeling the brunt, I think Joel Priestley was truly the one being tested, and for him to come out of it stronger was the defining moment. 😥
The final part of the plot definitely leaned towards a much angstier and darker tone - one where separation tested the bonds of their devotion - but not in the way of proving the love, but rather to make sure their love would survive. Priest's love is all-consuming, intense, and powerful; his background is rooted in scars and pain and violence that may not be for everyone. ❤️🩹❤️🩹 'And lucky for them, they knew all about falling ridiculously and stupidly in love.' But, with the love of two men who return that feeling in kind - who accept him for his past and even the limits he sets for opening himself up, the loyalty and protectiveness they so very strongly feel for him - was what stole his heart. 🥺🥺
“I know. Feelings like this, they should frighten you. But that’s what makes them so special, and what makes us so sure of who we love.”
But, surprisingly, I never doubted their love for each other - not once. Even when they were apart, I knew they would find their way back to each other. One of the best things about their dynamic, and one of my favorites, is how Robbies enjoys 'hearing about how they fell in love, their life together. It makes me feel closer to them'. I love that Julien knows how deeply Priest wants to be worthy in Robbie's eyes, never doubting Priest's love for him. 🥹 And I never tire of Priest and Robbie together - I ate those moments up. 🙂↕️🙂↕️ Whether it is raw intense passion or gentle tender comfort and kindness - 'the love and gratitude he saw there made his heart fill close to bursting' - just being this solid support to him, without him ever asking for it, reminds me why Robbie is my favorite character. How he is the balm to their storm and how he soothes the fires in their hearts. 🥰
