There are not many places left where cartooning reportage is still done, but one of the few is Scene and Heard, every fortnight in Private Eye. This is proper eye of the people reportage. Greene will show up at an event, and it can be anything, and then from stitching together interviews, sketches taken at the time, photographs, he gives a feeling of what is going on at the time. Putting that together with the research he does then leads to a powerful little piece.
In Private eye, they will take up about half a page, in the paperback version of the book, these are therefore much larger, giving a better look at the detail he puts in his sketches.
The subjects themselves range widely. He easily slips to a piece on the world chess championships, to the naked bike rides to an arms fair. From the demonstrations outside an abortion clinic to a university sit on, via the morris dancers, there's nothing off limits.
These are wonderful little pieces, and if you are at all undecided, can I suggest a quick look at some of the pieces on the artists web site.
