An interesting idea, but one that doesn't quite come off - pair the paintings of a great artist with some of his most memorable comments. When it works best are when the comments relate directly to the art shown - which happens in this case about half the time. The other half, though, the words and images seem incongruous or at best only loosely connected. Certainly, Degas had a reputation as a witty and erudite speaker, but this book does not entirely capture the spirit of the artist's words. Still very interesting, but not as fully realised as perhaps could have been hoped.
