Avery Porter is a Reaper in the walled-off city of Ardua, tasked with the duty of sending souls to the afterlife. Her day-to-day life comes to a sudden halt when she is kidnapped by another Reaper and his exorcist companion, taking her far beyond the walls.
At first their claims of a demonic force lurking in selected Reapers seem outlandish, until Avery sees them for herself. The Knights of Od were created by the goddess of the underworld to swallow the land of the living; fueled by the elements and the unrest among the Shintori gods.
Their last chance lies with the Knight of Spirit, the last to be unleashed onto the world. Can they reach it before the Beldam’s Legion does?
This was a delightful surprise. So very well done for a more complex indie book, and with some of my favorite tropes.
Aegis is a fully-fledged fantasy with a world well established in a short first book of a series, with action and some rad features. Reapers! With demonic animal familiars! Bisexual witch\reaper protagonist! Grumpy maybe-future love interests! Crossroads demons! Swordplay! Gnarly skeletal demon alternate forms! A deadly entity that sleeps within a character, that can only be placated by one person - we love to see it.
This was a book with such unique world building! And it's written in such a way that I was always so eager to learn more. The author has a wonderful writing style that truly makes you feel like you're right there with them in the action, describing each detail so well to be visualized. Love me some bloody battles!!
Also with the lore, I still am just SO curious how everything is connected. Especially - who really IS Avery, or more like WHAT is she? I have so many questions, but indeed this is only book one of a trilogy. I need to read on and find out what happens next!!
Aegis was a delight from cover to cover. Samhain crafts a unique setting that combines Urban Fantasy with a secondary world--something quite rare in both genres. It's here that you can, perhaps, read a strong anime influence, and fans of anime like CLAMP's X will find much to love in this action-packed yet character-driven adventure.
A first book in a series, Aegis follows Avery (a newly-created Reaper along the lines of Dead Like Me's George) and her cat-familiar Aegis as they join forces with a band of fellow Reapers in an effort to stick a wrench in the ongoing battle between two powerful otherworldly forces.
Infused with anime-style action and aesthetics, Aegis is fast-paced and will have you quickly turning the pages. Samhain's smooth, clear prose is a huge aid here, and you'll easily find you're speeding through the book. Although on paper this one took me a while to finish, that was soley because of a lack of time for reading; when I did pick it up, it was devouring huge chunks at a time.
One of my favourite aspects of the book was the concept of the familiars (animals who, as the name would suggest, pair with their respective Reaper). Aegis the cat can only be heard by Avery , while another central character (the taciturn and mysterious Moz) is partnered with a rat named Jack. I also adored the gang's interactions with Balthazar (a kind of Baron Samedi-like figure). For me, I started to really sink into the book around his introduction, and became very invested in .
Aegis does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger following some major revelations about a minor character, but with the second volume already available that's no reason not to pick up Aegis. I'll be grabbing the follow-up as soon as I can!
I really loved this book. The story was incredibly fascinating! The worldbuilding is crazy interesting and I don't think there was a single character that I wasn't in love with, each one incredibly unique and fun. Definitely a five star read!
