Private investigator Kate Shugak is 5 foot 1 inch tall, carries a scar that runs from ear to ear across her throat and owns a half-wolf, half-husky named Mutt. Orphaned at eight years old, Kate grew up to be resourceful, strong willed and defiant. She is tougher than your average heroine – and she needs to be to survive the worst the Alaskan wilds can throw at her. Kate investigates murders. She's worked under cover in the Arctic Circle, gone to sea, signed up as a bodyguard, tracked missing tribal relics and she continues to fight for the Aleut way of life. In this epic box set, Kate will track an unknown mass murderer, go undercover to apprehend a drug dealer and face extreme peril herself. Just as well that she'll have Mutt at her side throughout it all. And with this Box Set, you'll save over 50% compared to buying the books individually.
Dana Stabenow was born in Anchorage and raised on 75-foot fish tender in the Gulf of Alaska. She knew there was a warmer, drier job out there somewhere.
Intersting characters, plot and development though partially confusing. I'm not sure if it's due to the language (so very different from what I read by most American authors) and at such a high level I can only recommend it to very advanced or fluent English language students. Still I'm looking forward to continue the series. There're many typos and plot errors/contradictions in these books.
#1 A Cold Day For Murder4* 3.5* 12/8-9/19; 9/3-5/22; 6/7-8/24 (201) #2 A Fatal Thaw 4* 12/11-12/19; 9/26-28/22 (207) #3 Dead in the Water 4* 12/17/19; 9/29-10/1/22 (192) Set primarily in the Bering Sea; either less errors or the language was so foreign to me I wasn't able to detect them #4 A Cold Blooded Business 4.5* 12/24-28/19; 10/3-4/22 (225) oil business, archeology & native arts, narcotics case NEVER AGAIN #5 Play With Fire 2.5* 1/5-6/20; 10/14-15/22 (237) NEVER AGAIN I don't agree with the author on many basic points of view. Unfortunatelly the story line is too realistic to disregard it entirely so I have to accept it as the fiction that it is. #6 Blood Will Tell 4.5* 1/6-8/20; 11/22-24/22 (267) Set in Anchorage at and around AFN convention #7 Breakup 5* 4/5-7/20; 7/1-3/22; 11/24-26/22 (265) hilariously fun and my favorite of the books in series so far. I love Kate's development more and more. #8 Killing Grounds 3.5* 4/7-14/20; 11/26-28/22 (248) around the 4th of July #9 Hunter's Moon5* 3.5 4/26-28/20; 12/5-8/22 (259) a roller coaster BTW: Stopping this book set with book 9 was a really nasty trick and now I understand why the first book set has only 9 books and the next one 11 and still both are priced the same amount. If you finish this book set you'll need urgently the next book and that's either genius marketing or grade A torture tool.
Really enjoyed these books, and I wanted to give this box set 5 stars, but for one small thing. . . She faces death in every one. There's a lot of books in this series, so she's not likely to actually die, but, it'd be really nice if there was a book where her life wasn't at risk - or she didn't get seriously hurt. The writing's excellent, and I love the characters and stories. So, I want there to be a 4 1/2 star rating for the set.
