Published to coincide with Ontario's Algonquin Park's 125th anniversary, this full-color photographic testimonial is a celebration of the many plants and wildlife found within its protected borders. From peatlands to coniferous forests, from spring peepers to beavers, from moose to osprey to yellow toadflax and spotted salamanders, the park teems with wildlife all year round. Found in the Canadian Shield region, Algonquin Park bears the unusual distinction of having rivers flow north, south, east and west from its domain.
This is an absolutely beautiful book of Algonquin Park. The photographs themselves are amazing, but the whole tone of the book is set by the author, Michael Runtz. You can just feel his love of nature, and of Algonquin, from looking at his photos and reading his preface and the photos’ descriptions. He quite simply sounds like a wonderful person, and this is confirmed by the introductory pages that are written by Park Naturalists Dan Strickland and Ron Tozer. They’ve known Runtz for years and by telling a few personal stories about Runtz, they leave no doubt in our minds that he is just a really nice guy who is totally dedicated to nature and the environment.
I loved the text but the photos are, of course, the stars of the book. They’re gorgeous. I’ve been to Algonquin a few times, mostly when my kids were younger and we’d go in the early spring, searching for moose. This book makes me want to visit Algonquin again… and again… and again…!
It’s taken me a few months to work my way through this book, mainly because it’s the kind of book you can sit down and pick up anytime you want and enjoy immensely beautiful photos of Algonquin Provincial Park, one of my absolute favourite places in the world. It’s mostly photography, but Michael Runtz does give some really good descriptions of some of the natural scenes in this book. It’s kind of cool the way he’s organized it – it’s divided into four seasons. If you enjoy nature photography or you have a love for Algonquin like I do, this book is one you should add to your shelves.
Stunning photography and fascinating information, this book highlights the best of Algonquin Provincial Park — and tempts me to explore it myself to see more of the beauty this space has to offer!
