Part of the 'Tales by Rumi' collection and 'Older Readers Picturebooks', Joo retells the story of a young man who wants a tattoo a lion upon his back to mirror his own power and strength. Yet when the tattooing begins, he squeals in pain and asks for the design to be continually trimmed down until we are left with a very sorry sight indeed. Is this the young man's real mirror perhaps?

Joo's retelling of Rumi's thirteenth century tale is brought to life in this small, almost pocket-sized version. I loved the extra little touches around the element of faux-dominant masculinity. The fact that the tattooist is female adds to that wonderful sense of irony.

A bit of a strange one, found this in the "Reflecting Realities" section in our library.
At first I was quite confused by this book and didn't understand the story, but after a bit of research I found that the it is based off the work of a Persian Poet named Rumi. His works are read all across the Middle East and India, transcending ethnic and religious borders. I guess there is a symbolic meaning behind this story, I just need to think what it is first!

The Lion Tattoo is a story from the Masnavi, which was a collection of poetic stories by a famous thirteenth century Persian poet and philosopher called Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi who is more often known as Rumi. It is a spiritual text that teaches Sufis how to reach their goal of being truly in love with God and is often called “the Qur’an in Persian”.

This is a book from Tiny Owl Publishing’s new series of picture books for older readers. There is a very small amount of text but the story is well told through the colourful full-page illustrations.

The story begins with a young man who decides that he wants a fierce lion tattoo on his shoulder. In those days, it was common from men in that culture to have tattoos to protect them from harm.

When the tattooist begins her work, it is too painful for the man. He decides that his lion doesn’t need a tail, or a mane or a stomach! This is going to be a very silly looking lion! Finally, the tattooist has enough of his complaints and moaning and throws him out saying, “Brother, you just can’t stand the pain…”

The story teaches us that often people have big dreams but unless you are prepared to work hard you will never reach your goals. I think this would work well as a collection of moral stories rather than just one. It has a style that would look good in a book of comic strips.

Although I'm not entirely sure what this book is about, I think it might be that we all have to potential to be brave lions if we believe in ourselves. Not sure though. Definitely one to discuss with others.

A unique and really hilarious story. I enjoyed the beautifully illustrated characters and the philosophical core of the picture book.
