On the other side, you’ll find work from the winners of the first annual Breakout 8 Writers Prize, offered by Epiphany and the Authors Guild. The Breakout 8 prize seeks to recognize outstanding emerging literary voices and bring visibility to the writers of our future by honoring eight student authors—both graduates and undergraduates. This was a fine issue! The poems really blew me away, they were my favorite parts. I'm so happy they were able to elevate undergrad writers to their stature with such great judges, design, and a variety of stories about identity, sexuality, and comings-of-age, instead of the white 45-year-old stares at a tree stories we sometimes get. Epiphany seems like it has some young, diverse readers and I really appreciate that. I wasn't drawn in by a lot of the stories or think they'll be that memorable, but that's fine. I bought this for 50 cents at the Friends of the Library Book Sale. I wonder who gave it away.

Connection: I worked at Tin House Summer Workshop 2018 where Chee taught, and I was TOTALLY going to submit to Breakout 8 before the deadline passed as my short story failed to make it to their slush in time.
