For me, characters take a long time to develop. I'm always adding layers and looking for ways to make them more complicated. Whenever I get stuck, I try and make the character do something unexpected. Often it opens up a new trajectory into their past and their current motivations. I hope you enjoy reading 12 LIVES OF SAMUEL HAWLEY! (less)

“Everything breaks if you hit it hard enough.”
Hannah Tinti, The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley

“When death comes, she said, all that matters is this: to be next to one another. My mother was wearing a silk dress, and as she pressed her fingers into his, all of my father's adventures and hard living melted away. He knew that he had met the woman he would love until he couldn't love anymore.”
Hannah Tinti, The Good Thief

“Is that what you wanted to hear?"
"No."
The man reached over, took hold of the lantern and blew it out. Night enveloped the barn. "Well," he said at last to the darkness between them, "that's when you know it's the truth.”
Hannah Tinti, The Good Thief
