The Gospel of Matthew Volume Two by William Barclay is a very informative and comprehensive study on the gospel according to Saint Matthew. This second volume gives vivid insights to this sacred book of Saint Matthew and covers chapters eleven through twenty-eight. Dr Barclay takes a courageous stand on the teaching of Matthew and presents the teaching of Jesus in a unique way. In truth, each chapter is carefully explained in a verse by verse format, and great care is given to Jesus’ parables, miracles, suffering, death, burial, and resurrection. Indeed, Jesus’ teaching on his Second Coming is beautifully expounded upon with many vivid explanations and warning. This second volume is truly an indispensable aid to enriching your spiritual knowledge and faith in our risen Lord. This book is highly recommended.

I really enjoy Barclay's commentary. He blends historical detail, analysis of different translations from Greek, Aramaic, etc, primary sources from the ancient world, as well as various points of view on interpretation to present a thoughtful and in depth look at and explanation of the scriptures. He is very easy to read and I found myself utterly fascinated by the Uist rial perspective in particular that he brought to such a familiar Gospel. His own faith comes shining through, as well. While I don't agree completely with some of his analysis, I found his writing thought provoking and I feel that I have a much deeper understanding of God's word through this Gospel.

William Barclay was an excellent interpreter of the teachings of Jesus. He translated the New Testament from its early Greek format. His method was to endeavor to convey the meaning of Jesus' teachings, rather than to ensure his translations conformed to the doctrine of a given Christian sect. For this reason, I feel they are the most useful translations of the New Testament gospels. As with his several other books on the New Testament, this Gospel of Matthew is well worth reading. Barclay's two volume study of the Gospel of Matthew has significantly contributed to my understanding of Jesus' message.

I am reading all Barclays exposition of the books of the New Testament. Matthew was the first of the Gospels I read and it is brilliant. Barclay really opens up the background to the narrative, setting it in the times both of the Roman occupation, the current attitudes of Jewish rulers of the temple and the community and also the background and understanding of the apostles themselves. I am looking forward to continuing my exploration of Barclays exposition of the remaining books of teh New Testament.

Great background information on the Gospel of Matthew. Like most other commentaries, Barclay’s doctrine may not completely align with the reader’s, but eat the meat and spit out the bones. It’s still worthwhile.

William Barclay's commentaries are well-written and scholarly. Although I frequently disagree with his perspective on some of the verses in Matthew (he occasionally seems to read more into them than I feel would be a normal "leap" of conjecture), he is certainly my favorite commentator. He incorporates good linguistic knowledge with good historical knowledge, which helps in the understanding of Matthew.

Barclay's observations on the mock trial and crucifixion of Jesus are some of the best I've ever encountered.
