Mission Moon 3-D A New Perspective

Rate this book
The story of the lunar landing and the events that led up to it, told in text and visually stunning 3-D images.July 2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Apollo 11's epochal lunar landing, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon. This visually rich book offers a new perspective on that historic accomplishment, telling the story of the lunar landing and the events that led up to it with text and 3-D images. A 3D viewer, designed by astrophysicist (and lead guitarist with the rock group Queen) Brian May is included with the book.

Mission Moon 3-D offers unique access to the Apollo astronauts and what they saw. It tells the story of the US-Soviet space race, from Sputnik and the space dog Laika to Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared that America would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong guided the Eagle to a safe landing on the edge of the moon's Sea of Tranquility. President Richard Nixon told the astronauts, and the nation, that it was "the greatest week in the history of the world since the Creation." Mission Moon 3-D recounts all this and more in memorable and visually stunning fashion.

You came for the pictures right? And Brian May? The text of this book is fine, nothing out-of-this-world, though there were several moments when I found it really appealing. But David Eicher's task was not easy: summarizing the history of human spaceflight (with emphasis on Apollo of course) in 180 pages, giving up much of that space for pictures. But wow, those pictures. Many are simply breathtaking. Provided with a special viewer designed by Brian Frickin' May, these stereoscopic images easily steal the show, truly providing a new perspective on space exploration. One of my favorites was a picture of the lunar rover, with the American flag visible behind, partially obscured by the transparent communications antenna on the rover. Eicher also adds depth to his text by discussing social and cultural changes happening concurrently with the Apollo program, which is nothing new of course, but I appreciated learning how key moments in the history of Queen, and its astrophysicist/guitarist, fit in.

Mission Moon 3-D offers readers a unique look at the Apollo astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts and what they saw on their missions by presenting readers with photographs in three dimensions. Using the special viewer included with the book, readers can view the photographs stereographically and enjoy a truly exceptional viewing experience.

The narrative begins with the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union and covers all lunar missions as well as looking at some Gemini and Voskhod missions and the high price of lost life paid by space explorers in both nations. Along with the text and pictures, there is a glossary, a forward by astronaut Charlie Duke and an afterword by astronaut Jim Lovell.

For readers interested in space exploration or science or history, or those simply looking for an uncommon way of experiencing the information in a book, this is a must-read volume.

Highly recommended.

A good, if basic, overview of the Apollo missions, the real treasure is the stereo graphs (and kind of cool the imaging team was headed by Brian May of Queen). Worth reading for the images alone, there are some really excellent 3D views of spacecraft and the moon.

I've always been very interested in space travel, especially in NASA's Apollo programme and the moon landings. I was nearly 7 years old when Néil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon and I dreamt of becoming an astronaut and go to the moon. That never happened, but the fascination with the moon landings stayed.
I've bought and read tonnes of books about the Apollo programme, and when my favourite rock guitarist, Dr Brian May, collaborated on this book, I had to get it.
I was not disappointed. the book and the 3D images give the reader a new and very different insight into the moon landings and I recommend that everybody who is as fascinated by the moon landings as me read this book. you will not regret it!

A wonderful look at the race to reach the moon illustrated with many beautiful stereoscopic images never before seen. It strikes a nice balance, digging into many interesting details about the various missions and activities on earth while always keeping the storytelling moving and, as already mentioned, illustrating them with impactful 3D photos. The quality of the design and book production are also top notch. Anyone interested in space exploration should enjoy this book.

Outstanding. Just enough science to keep a layman riveted without being confused, stunning photography and a cool twist of balancing the timeline of the space race with musical developments here on Earth. Of course, having one of the greatest guitarists from one of the greatest bands in history as a co-author makes that a no-surprise!
We look back on the missions to the moon as we do list things from the past; with disinterest and no real connection, and in some cases with doubts as to whether they even happened at all.
To me it seems that advancing mankind by looking, and traveling into the stars is a way to bring people together instead of the division that is driving its way into our society. Let’s go to Mars, let’s build a bigger space station, let’s get out there.
Thank you to the writers and producers of this book to spark my interest in space again!

Very nice coffee table book with at lot of fine images, both 2-d and 3-d, as well as some good solid storytelling in the text. Highly recommended if you have a soft spot for all things Space. Flawless cooperation between David Eicher and Brian May, who, apart from being a guitarist of some merit, is also an expert in stereo photography.
