There is a LOT of information in this book, although it is reasonably easy to read given the extremely large cast of characters and the quick-moving plot and the detail of the subject matter. Is is good for a quickish overview of the last two millennia of Christian thought, but personally I found it a bit biased in favour of the Presbyterians (the author is one) and a bit light-on for other denominations. Nevertheless, I recommend it as a brief guide to the subject.

Whistle-stop tour of the past 2000 years. Good, even coverage. I found it interesting that Renwick views 1850-90 as the highpoint in British church history. I was encouraged to see how different groups and people have carried the Gospel baton forwards. He will build his church and the gates of hell will not prevail! In this book it is evident for me that we are one church under God, saved by Christ and equipped by the Holy Spirit to bring glory to His name as we fulfil His great commission.

A great big picture overview of church history. Helpfully zooming in at important moments. There is no hiding in this account, warts and all are retold for us to learn from. It is clear we need to always be on our guard against corruption and the twisting of God's word for selfish gain both on a personal and institutional level.
