Life gets weird when you’re adopted by an alien. One million years in the future, young human Antaska and her psychic cat are adopted as pets by a gigantic alien. Traveling in outer space, she becomes telepathic in a world where that’s dangerous. Then she gets into a love triangle that’s even more dangerous. Her cat tries to tell Antaska what she’s doing wrong, but will she listen? An all-new ending has been added to this version (10/2018), and the first chapters of hypnoSnatch and Bonded in Space are included. Note: This book is *not* a science fiction mystery.
hypnoSnatch - Is it love, or is it alien abduction? Things keep getting weirder when Antaska travels in outer space with an alien and her psychic cat. Mischievous but evil part-reptile humanoids team up with Antaska’s nemesis, a genetically enhanced fitness instructor, to take revenge on her to the ends of the universe. Her unexpected alien abduction spoils their plans.
Bonded in Space - Strange things happen when a crazy alien can’t get you out of his mind.
Just out of space school, Pweet can’t wait to take off from Earth. But she runs into problems with the giant aliens who take Earthlings into space. Marroo the slave hunter wants to forget about Antaska. So he comes up with the perfect plan. He’ll kidnap another Earth female, experience her love, and then move on. But it’s not working out like he expected. Now he’s got feisty, high-maintenance Pweet on his hands. Antaska wants to forget about Marroo too, but can she? Two more psychic cats show up to adopt humanoids and read their minds when they feel like it.

Original concept

I love the concept of the novella. I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi books because of the strange made up words but I didn't have a problem with that in Elfa Todari's novel. She did a wonderful job explaining everything in detail. The descriptions of the Verdants and their ship made it easy to imagine it. My only problem with the novel was going in and out of characters heads which was a little confusing at times but after I got use to it, it seemed natural. I enjoyed reading the first part and will read the additional parts she releases.

Some of this will have small spoilers (nothing to ruin the reading of it, or spoil anything in a major way, mostly some bits of info that are kind of intriguing to me.

So let me start off with a very tiny spoiler, which is in the first chapter, and can be read within. So we all know how a cat will choose the human that it wants as its owner. You will buy a cat, bring it home but no matter if you love it to bits, it just might choose another in the household to be with over you. In this book it is a similar concept in which the cat actually chooses what alien (called Verdantes) they want for their human to be a pet to, at least in the case of the human girl named Antaska and her cat Potat.

Potat chooses (and allows) the Verdante named M.Hoyvil be her new pet and the owner of her other pet Antaska. You will get to read her point of view at times, and M.Hoyvil as well as Antaska.

Everything about this book drew me in, the great cover art, the interesting title, and the blurb that was written. There are different perspectives that you get to read about from the different character, each one separated by an alien head so you know that the focus is shifting.

When I began reading this space adventure book for children I was quite quickly drawn in by the intriguing ideas portrayed within the first few pages: extremely tall aliens with telepathic powers, a humanoid employee/pet, Antaska, accompanied by her own pet cat, called Potat, and all on a journey through space to an unknown planet. The story goes on to describe the various events and new activities, experienced by Antaska on board the spaceship, with great imagination and skill from the author.

I hesitate to describe her experiences, many rather domestic but novel in nature, as I want to avoid spoilers. However, she has several rather violent physical encounters with a pair of physically “perfect” humans that verge on romantic infatuation and jealousy. This leads to an interesting climax that could have occurred in many a rom-com but has the different arbitration to affairs from the aliens that the reader hopes for at this point!

I have no doubt that this story will appeal to readers aged from 10 to 15 but does require some editing throughout for typos and spelling errors, eg. “relived” for relieved. While, as an English reader, I could accept many of the US English spellings like “center” and so on, I found the (increasingly common) use of “less” for “fewer” rather jarring – as in “less people” when it should be fewer people. Apart from this I would have liked more technical sci-fi and adventure in the story, too mundane in its space-ship domesticity for me.

The main criticism I have is for its ending, which is abrupt and inexplicable. There seems too little warning in an introduction or explanation later that this is “Part One” of a series. Once again, as in other similar book-series I felt cheated at the end. Perhaps younger readers than this one will not mind – but I doubt it.
I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest and non-reciprocal review.

This is a fun short story about an Earth girl who takes ship with a benign alien race. Naturally, she brings her cat. There's a lot of description of the space ship interior, life and classes. We don't learn much about Earth but for some sweeping statements about reproduction being controlled and a north and a south government. But our heroine doesn't want to return.

I waited for some action but mainly this comes from interaction between our heroine and some of the other people aboard. There is little or no normal conversation between humans in this odd situation. Our heroine learns and grows through exercise, martial arts and fending off jealousy.

The real fun comes from the pet and master situation where the girl doesn't realise that her large telepathic alien - and another mind - consider her a pet to be cared for by them. I liked the story and will read more.

I downloaded Alien Pets as a free ebook from Amazon. I'll be the first to admit--the whole concept behind this book is somewhat quirky, but I adored the characters and the story line. Cute, light-hearted, with some really great character moments.

Just stupid, sorry I could go into the lack of backstory, juvenile writing, lack of character development, but no I won't. It's just stupid and I didn't waste my time finishing it.

Humorous Science Fiction ... with a Telepathic Cat!

This is accessible science fiction that will put a smile on your face. I wasn't sure when I first started reading it what exactly I was getting into with a reference to alien pets. Basically, this is a story about multiple kinds of “pets” and how they interact with each other and the situations they are thrown into.

We start on Earth one million plus years in the future. An apocalypse nearly wiped us out, but in the last ten thousand years, an alien species known as the Verdantes has helped us improve our technology and our health. The Verdantes need us for a couple of reasons which I won't go into here, so after a certain age they are allowed to adopt one of us as their “pet.” We, the humans, don't know we’re their pets. Humans go to a special school to learn how to be assistants to the Verdentes; so we think they are just our employers! But the Verdantes have an agreement with the two remaining Earth governments that they will adopt us as their pets and take responsibility for us. Verdantes are telepathic and between themselves communicate only that way. Humans are not telepathic.

We first meet Antaska while she is on display to be chosen by aliens who are heading out on an intergalactic, world-finding trip. Antaska is considered a young person at the age of 50-something; Verdantes tech has allowed us to extend our lifetimes to near 200 years of age. She has a pet named Potat, a very small cat. At a very funny reveal, Potat is shown to be telepathic, and she believes that Antaska is her pet! (Like that joke: Dogs have owners; cats have staff.) In fact, using her telepathy, Potat is able to draw over a particular Verdante male, who does “hire” Antaska for the long voyage (or, rather, makes her his pet). The cat now believes that she has two pets, the human and the Verdante!

When Antarka joins M. Hoyvil on the ship that will take them to space, she starts to get telepathic glimpses into both her cat's mind and the minds of the Verdantes around her. She doesn't quite understand that that is what's happening to her, that she is really hearing what is in the minds of those around her. The author does a good job revealing information about the Earth's past, the Verdantes, and the potential for this trip, but it's done in a slow and interesting way. There is lots going on here; I’m just barely scratching the surface.

I found this book to be a lot of fun and just a good read. The worldbuilding was well done. The author has imagined quite an alternate future reality but has conveyed it with humor and humanity. I love the jumping back and forth between the various minds to see what each think of what is happening to them. I especially love the cat's perspective. She can't understand why her human pet doesn't do what she wants when she has clearly told her telepathically what her master wants her to do! I just about laughed out loud when she called the Verdante, M. Hoyvil, her newest pet.

The book had a few issues with punctuation, spelling, and grammar, along with a few left-in words that should have been removed that should have been removed while editing and a few close-but-no-cigar words (like titled instead of tilted). But it didn't detract from the pleasure of reading this book.

If you enjoy science fiction with a little humor along with more intense situations, you might enjoy Alien Pets.

An interesting short read, exploring themes of trust, adventure, and slavery.
Also, the second half of this book description (Bonded in Space - Strange things happen when a crazy alien can’t get you out of his mind) wasn't found within the version that I read.
This adventure of a girl, her cat and her new alien friend going to space is an exciting and fun read.

Antaska had pink hair, and with her, a small cat, Potat. They sat in a selection room that separated her from other humans and the Verdantes. The Verdantes were aliens who needed humans to keep their sanity on their long space exploration missions because humans were not telepathic like they were. They went from room to room, selecting their human companions, and while Antaska sat there, Potat scared off her first two possible offers to travel in space. The cat accepted the third offer by a male named M. Hoyvil. Once aboard the Verdantes ship and settled, M. Hoyvil and Antaska went to the communal dining room, where she seemed to attract the attention of one of the biggest and most beautiful male humans she had ever seen. The woman who sat next to him also stared at her, but instead of desire, she saw anger. This woman was obviously staking her claim on the man next to her, and she would find out that the man did not know how to take a no for an answer. While they ate, an even larger Verdant came over to their table. While he said nothing to her, she guessed he was holding a telepathic conversation with M. Hoyvil, but she was getting a headache while this was going on. It pounded inside her head and then went away all of a sudden, but it was then that the whispers began.

A telepathic cat, yeah, one million years in the future leaves so much room for humor. But, while the feline in question did add some comic relief, it was more of a conscience for our heroine. And speaking of our heroine, she is nearly fifty years old and acts like a schoolgirl less than half her age. She is totally clueless about male/female interactions and behaves like she just entered puberty.

Yes, this story has science fiction and alien interaction, and you may like it. I give it four stars out of five stars.

Antaska had longed to travel into outer space, but her only chance to do so was to be chosen by one of the Verdante. It was easier said than done since it seemed as if Potat, her cat, wanted to sabotage her at every turn. Despite this she was selected. But little did she know humans were to Verdante what Potat was to her, a pet. M. Hoyvil, her new owner, soon finds himself concerned for her safety when her initial attraction to one of the almost human trainers earns her a dangerous level of unwanted attention. Pair that with the fact she keeps hearing telepathic voices, and she's in for one hell of a trip.

I found Trisha McNary's Alien Pets really easy to get into. Written in character specific third party no question is left unanswered, from the musings of long-suffering Potat as she attempts to steer her pets'—both her human and the newly acquired Verdante—path, to the ever-darkening thoughts of Eegor. There is some great character development and author does an amazing job in creating believable science fiction settings and atmospheres. I really liked Antaska's strong character and her drive to improve, there were times where her stubbornness and reluctance to embrace her developing telepathy became frustrating, and not only to Potat, but as a cat person I must admit Potat was my favourite character, if we could hear cats thoughts these would be very close. This book is filled with interesting ideas, and is fun to read. Conflict, uncertainty, adaptation and challenges, the markers of any big change, fill every page of this entertaining tale

This was not a romance. It was a cute short story that could easily be a sci-fi adventure, but not a romance. I really struggled with the character of Antaska, but by the end she had redeemed herself. M. Hoyvil and her cat, Potat, made up for it though! (Gosh I loved that kitty.) The book does a far amount of head hopping which was confusing on more than one occasion as there are no clear transitions. The setting was vivid and interesting. The plot was a slow and uninteresting for most of the first half but after a key chapter happens about half way through, the book gets more interesting and quite enjoyable.

Rating

3 stars

Although this wasn't a romance (as it was originally categorized) it was a cute enjoyable little book. Just get over the first little hump and know that Antaska will be less annoying in the second half, and you'll be sure to fly right through it!

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
"Alien Pets" was my first Introduction to McNary's writing. I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining and thought provoking story. I'll definitely be reading more of the author's work.
McNary does a fine job of world building ( world building that is integral to the story ) in this tale about growing up and accepting responsibility for your actions. In addition the author did a superb job of weaving Antaska's, Potat's, and M. Hoyvil's, the three main viewpoint characters, threads within the story into an entertaining tapestry that draws in the reader.
Q: Will Antaska survive Gym class?
Q: What secret does Antaska hold in her head that could alter the future of Human/Feline/Verdante relations?
A: Pick up this book, read it and find out!! You won't regret it!
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book. I am voluntarily sharing this review which is my own honest opinion.

Nope

This book is a book i would never read again it sucked really bad and I normally don't write reviews on books normally. If I don't like it then it's just me, but the main character was just ignoring I kept reading even though I wanted to stop because l like to finish a book. Every time she thought she heard her cats voice she always brushed it off as being tired or something. It wasn't till the last 2 chapter that she finally accepted what can do and with the three some there wasn't one it was two aliens who were made to be together and didn't like when one flirted with someone else .The the guy trying to make her jealous and I would admit that the cat did try to warn her buy talking to her telepathically but again she didn't listen to the cat .Then came to conclusions that he wasn't worth it because his suppose mate was beating her up I would not want to tell anybody to read this book I wasted my time.

In the future having met alien races - would we be considered equals, savages that need to be controlled or as pets (hopefully not as pests).

Our pets are considered to be family members - and occasionally they exhibit behaviors that we could say were only possible if they had the ability to read our minds. Just think what we might learn if a telepathic race decided we would make great pets and what trouble we could get into!
Add into that situation that our pets could be telepathic to the aliens while we weren't.

How would we as humans settle into that position - and would we even realize it. Stir into that mix the fact that the aliens have a lifespan that is as many times as long to ours as ours is to our pets. How could we navigate the interpersonal and political relationships that we would have no clue to.

I enjoyed the novel greatly and want to read more in this series! And yes, I selected this to read in a book giveaway.

This is one of the more original books of this genre I've read in a long time. So why the 4 stars instead of 5? Two reasons: 1. Todari really, really needs a copy editor—I was thrown out of the story by bad cutting/pasting of words, and 2. The ending wasn't an ending. This is going to be a series of at least two books (and I have no idea when #2 is coming out, but not soon enough!) but book #1 should still be a complete book.

The 3 main characters in this book are great fun. The human goes to work for an alien and leaves Earth behind her forever. She is allowed to bring her pet cat on the space ship. The aliens are telepathic, and so is the cat. What our heroine doesn't know is, she, too, is a pet.

This book is just the first part of the journey. There is fodder here for a whole series, and I hope to eventually read them. Great fun.

Alien Pets by Trisha McNary is a book that is part of the Xeno Relations series. In this book, a human named Antaska and her pet cat Potat are planning to get hired by a Verdante alien to take them into space as his or her human assistant. They end up getting picked by a shorter male Verdante named M. Hoyvil and the board the Verdante’s alien spaceship. This is the beginning of a very interesting discourse on who and or what a pet might or might not be. This book was a very entertaining and fun to read. The characters were all very well written and the interactions between them very realistic. I think that this book also has an excellent moral for anyone who is paying attention. This is the perfect book for anyone who enjoys a great story. Alien Pets is a great story about the amazing and interesting reality of pet ownership.

This is an interesting take on the alien invasion genre. I like the characters human, Verdante and feline. They are very well written with well developed behaviors both good and bad. The plot was a bit repetitive gym, school, eat rinse & repeat. I also think the target audience is young teens or tweens. Other than that you’re probably going to find the story lacking. Lastly not a fan of the ending. It seemed like the author just stopped right as the plot was getting interesting. There wasn’t even a cliff hanger it just stopped. Was rather odd way to end a book.
I recieved this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

Interesting concept

I thought this was a very intriguing take on human-alien relationships. Have telepathy be a universal communication method was really cool and so was the fact that even animals like cats can evolve to communicate that way. The characters were thought out and I enjoyed how they interacted with each other. The main characters seem to be growing well together and I think their future has a lot of excitement. Having a human pet and them being aware enough to think of them as another equal being while the rest of society doesn't makes M one of my favorite interstellar characters I've read.

Unique space adventure

Ataska, a human female, and her cat, Potat, have been selected by giant green aliens as "pets" for thousands of years. The Verdante are a telepathic race and are not aware that cats are sentient and telepathic as well. It's not safe for human females to become telepathic and travel into space, but Ataska finally realizes she has become telepathic and is struggling with how to deal with it. She gets picked out by her human male fitness and martial arts teacher for unwanted sexual favors incurring the wrath of his female partner. There are many exciting and interesting dynamics between the humans, Potat and her Verdante. Very enjoyable story.

I Loved it, looking forward to the next episode.

Who knew aliens would send their children to interact with humans? Who knew they would select us as pets for long term space travel?

This author’s skillful interpretation of adult aliens, their children, and the children’s pets is incredible. Of course, my favorite alien child and his female pet (with her pet cat) have me eagerly awaiting their trip.

This novel sets up the dynamics, ends well, and has the reader anticipating the growing dynamics between the characters. Hum, I wonder how the teachers will like the little pet’s developing the…

Oops, never mind—no spoilers here, move on, please.

Good middle school, young teen book or adults like me who enjoy aliens and cat. The writing is simple in description but it is possible that the writer is trying to convey a sterile simple environment that Antashka and her cat Potat live in. McNarys dialogue between characters is much more interesting. I really enjoyed the story line and the lessons that Antashka and her giant alien keeper learn are valuable. I look forward to the next book in the series. A very fun read. I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Enjoyable

I found this book to be rather enjoyable. I was expecting a plot line that (thankfully) didn’t happen and I’m looking forward to eventually reading the second book. The story ends on a cliffhanger, which isn’t my favorite, but the story is developed enough that I want to continue on.

On a side note, the book could use another round of editing. Nothing too bad, but as a writer myself, I find some of the errors distracting. They do not prevent even beginner readers from understanding the sentences, so don’t let the handful of typos put you off!

Spectacular

I am glad that Trisha shared this book....what would it be like to have 8-10 ft green aliens taking you to be their"pet" and travel to discover new civilizations to boldly go?..in this first book we get a taste of that....and find out that there is a more forward thinking being who sees his human not as a pet but an actual sentient thinking feeling companion?....for the answers to that and more give this book a read....and Trish a I hope you share the rest of the series😎

Very enjoyable humor, variety of characters, world-building

The world of Earth, 1 million years in the future, is hinted at. We mostly learn about it through the aliens, the Verdantes, who protect and assist earth humans in exchange for humans volunteers trained for space travel with Verdante employers.
The main characters (a young woman, her cat and the Verdante young man who picks them as his companions) are telepathic. How they come to discover this, and build friendship with each other, is believably presented with warmth and humor.

Great start..
I received a free copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review. This is the very beginning of this story and introduces us to Antaska, M. Hoyvil (and Potat). This has a great development of the characters and how their relationship with each other starts out. I was caught up in the story when it ended and am looking forward to the next part of the story. Even though this stops right where the adventure is about to begin, it is a great set-up for the continuing storyline.

Interesting story about aliens who adopt humans as pets because even though they are more evolved and long lived they cannot go into space alone.

Telepathic aliens and the first human to become telepathic meet each other. The human woman has a pet cat who is telepathic as well, and as she meets more and more aliens, her ability to hear them increases, and she hides her ability.

Fun read

Enjoyable read with a different plot line, hence funny and fun to read. The future written here is much different than other books. The characters are well written with many surprises. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see what other sentient beings come out of the author's fertile imagination.

Brilliantly quirky!

A novel take on a science fiction fear - being conquered by an alien race - with a twist. A brilliantly written story with all the drama of space travel with dramatic human interaction. Add to that a know-it-all feline that anyone would want to adopt, and you have a winner!
