The Fellestan army, led by the enigmatic Black Knight, mows down every village in its path. One such village is Silverton, where Kelizabeth “Kizzy” Sundir spends her days as a barmaid, serving drinks and scrubbing counters. When she isn't a barmaid, Kelizabeth is the caregiver of her blind, disabled mother.
News of the Fellestan invasion has her village in an uproar, and when Kelizabeth volunteers to join the militia, her bravery is met with chuckles. However, she is approached by a man named Eion McKenna, who offers lessons in archery and swordplay. Eion is clever, crass, and determined to turn the barmaid into a warrior.
Kelizabeth's new instructor is a man with secrets, and when they are revealed, her life will change forever.
Due to scenes of violence and torture, The Darkest Knight is intended for mature audiences.
I'm a rather reclusive author living in Ohio with four cats. I write super fluffy fluff and darkest grim grimdark. "This author has a strange imagination" was my favorite compliment ever. I hope my strange imagination entertains someone out there!
If you can manage the first chapter, which IS graphic and gruesome, the rest of the story is more tame. I liked Kizzy but she did seem at times emotionally younger than her age. The twist with The Darkest Knight himself was interesting and I didn't see it coming. 3.5 stars
If you can stomach chapter 1 it gets much lighter, it's a great story.
I almost gave up in the first chapter, it is too dark for my preference, but I hung on and the story lightened up a lot. I didn't really know what to expect but it was an easy read after, I didn't really expect it to get to where it did, but I will look for more by this author.
Kelizabeth the plain looking bar maid takes on the invading army
The story weaves a tale of a comely bar maid who studies with an old stranger to take on an invading army. An imaginative tale with gripping characters told by an enlightened author. I was enthralled to the final page with his writing! Well written Aron Lewes.
I don’t know where to start, I normally either love books or really dislike them with not a lot in between, but this book left me... perplexed, and therefore wasn’t sure what rating to give it, hence the 3 stars.
I really liked the idea behind the book and found most of the narration quite good though I found when people were talking that the result was jarringly unrealistic.
The other issues also related to realism: The ability to get across town in an unrealistic timeframe. Learning skills that would take people years in a matter of hours spread across a few days.
It’s almost like it’s written for a youth market though the warning about content lead me to believe otherwise. So I’m not sure if I’m reading a novel where the author needs to expand more and hone his skills or if I’m reading a book aimed at someone 30 years my junior? If it is aimed at the youth market, maybe something pointing this out should be put in the description.
I found the darkest knight to be rather gruesome in that the black knight killed indiscriminately and without remorse, on the contrary he enjoyed torturing his victims whoever they were. However when i found out that Eion was a time traveller and that he was also the dark knight and how much he had changed over the years it came as a pleasant surprise. For someone to be able to redeem themselves in this way gives one hope. I also have great hope for our mage, Daniul who so hates physical contact and is quite cold to start off with however Kizzy has a way of changing people for the better as she is such a good person. I love the idea of the chronocolla crystal which aides in time travel and hope that this will help Kizzy see her father once again. All in all this dark fantasy read is also one of hope and redemption! So I will go on to read book 2.
The dark knight leads a merciless army to challenge the king. As they pass from one town to another, they kill, burn and destroy everything.
Kizzie is a barmaid who lives with her mother. When she hears of the invasion, she is not sure if she should leave or stay. Who will influence her most -
- her mother who is leaving. - her love, the stable boy, who is leaving. - the mage, who has helped her on more than one occasion, but is leaving. - or an old rowdy swordsman, who is training her to use weapons, but who is staying.
A twist towards the end adds a new dimension to the story.
I leave the blurb to give you the guist of the story. This book was different for me, and it was nice to find a different type of story. It is well written with characters you get a chance to know. There are secrets, so many secrets and a super twist that I totally didn't expect. The author warned there is death and torture and he wasn't kidding. Not for the faint of heart. However, there is also caring and loving family and friendship. So you get a little of everything. The ending worked for me but it also left it open enough to know there is a second book.
Honestly, I would give this book a 3.5. The writing is a bit cliche, and the voice of the main character can be somewhat annoying at times. It definitely feels like the intended audience is on the younger side. What was described as the main character’s “best friend” never acts like it, and could pretty much be taken out of the story entirely. That said, the book does pick up more in the latter half, and I finished the book finding myself enjoying it.
The plot alone was thin and it seemed that the entire story had no real direction, just enough to try to make you want the rest of the series just to figure out what is even going on.... Don't waste your time or money on something like this with no real substance or actual direction. If I could give it 0 stars I would but the system isn't set up for that.
Excellent description of totally depraved torture and butchery by the Black Knight and his psychotic army. The main character, unlike him, is pure, good, kind, klutzy and adorable. Confusion comes from the insertion of time travel. A fun, but weird tale.
Kizzy is one of my favorite heroes in awhile. Considering how little time he had Arno drew very well rounded characters who are memorable and make you care. I am looking forward to book 2.
I really enjoyed this book. I found the premise to be very interesting, especially given this was set in a medieval time period. The mage surprised me when he actually showed humanity towards Kelizabeth and her mother. I highly enjoyed reading this.
