I was intrigued by this book and was both excited and dreading it at the same time. Most books about a monarchy are so detail-oriented it often feels like the author has taken on a new tangent every time a different topic is approached. Not this one. I've read the reviews and I hope you make it to mine before you make your ultimate decision on whether or not to select Liam Dale's book "Mary Queen of Scots". Yes, this is a quick, easy read rendition of years worth of information concerning a very important person in history. Not everyone wants to muddle through all the facts, dates, and mundane happenings. So, if you're expecting that to happen, you'll be sadly disappointed. However, the avenues to which she is related to other monarchs, the reason there are two different spellings for the last name, and the important highlights and supposition of what took place are all there. All told in a story format which makes it easy to follow, understand, and remember. Now I have an overall general idea of some things and if I choose to research further, then by all means that avenue is open to me. If not, I still have the knowledge laid out in this book. I thought it was well done, flowed easily, and gave me a new insight into some aspects of her life. I say well done.

Short and For Younger Readers

It's funny. I had signed up for this book at one of my favorite book review sites but held off reading it until I was in a suitable frame of mind for a more serious, heavy book, as I assumed this one would be. But it is not. In fact, I find it rather light in several respects. It isn't very long, only 33 pages at Amazon. So this is a super quick read on this infamous monarch. There isn't much depth here. Key points of her life are looked at very briefly (e.g., her relationship with Elizabeth I, the Darnley plot, and her death because of treason), but that's about it. For such a short book, I thought the author went off inappropriately on tangents occasionally, like talking about the nursery rhyme, “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary.” The tone of the book comes across as if it is meant for tweens or teens. It doesn't read like a serious adult book. That may or may not appeal to you! For me, I was left wanting more.

I was prompted to read this book after seeing the recent movie. I found the movie interesting, but hard to follow in regards to the characters. I found and chose this book to read because of the author's research into Mary's life. It was still confusing at times, but I had a better sense of who's who than I did before reading the book.

I plan to re-watch the movie as I think I can follow it better now.

A superb short book that is jam packed full of information. I have always been interested in Mary and so choosing to read this book was a no brainer for me. The information is presented in an easy to read, follow and understand way. A must read for anyone who wants to learn more about this historical figure.

Just as the title said. I just needed some quick summary to piece together the long story from other books I read. It was perfect for this!
