Give this a slow digest to savor. Beautiful photos, devotional, and tour guide comprise this view of the Holy Land. Many Holy Land sites are featured and given a historical spread followed by a spread of Reflection by the author.

Read this in preparation for our trip to the Holy Land in the spring. I loved the way they tied the events in the Bible to their geographic locations but also came to realize that the location for some events have either become obscured by structures built over them or specific information lost over the ages. It isn't the specific locations that are the most important; it is the events as recorded in the Bible and our response to them.

This beautiful coffee-table book is a unique compilation of historical facts and personal reflections interspersed with fascinating photography. Covering a wide range of sites, Vamosh gives us rich historical details and Everson follows with meditative thoughts on what it’s like to walk in the steps of history. From desolate desert locals to the bustling streets of Jerusalem, the authors take you on a memorable journey, relaying not only ancient biblical facts but also later historical markers over the many years of pilgrimage this land has seen. Each section is prefaced with a passage of Scripture that mentions the land or the landmark discussed, helping the reader anchor the physical locations in their historical context.

At first I wasn’t sure how to categorize this book since it combines so many different elements. Whereas I originally approached the book for research purposes, I think it best falls under the genre of “devotional” and would probably be best consumed slowly, one entry at a time as you might consume a daily devotional. Whatever you want to call it, this is a lovely book that will stir your affections for the Bible and help it come to life as you turn those well-known “bookmarks” into “landmarks.”

This fine book is a collaborative collection of insights from an earnest Jew and an evangelical Christian traveling Israel together. Unlike how most see Israel, midst many tourist mobs, these two spend quiet time in each of 38 places. Both are excellent wordsmiths. Both include in this book their own photography. You will learn archeological and thoughtful historic bits from Miriam at each site, then personal descriptions and reflections from Eva. They are fast friends connected by a deep love for what God has planted in the layers beneath this land promised Abraham and His seed. As Miriam says, this soil is “watered by the grace of heaven” “where sacred memory is more powerful than any force on earth”, and Eva adds “had I blinked I would have missed it…” She describes the prayers at the Western wall, the tzetels “packed like cotton in a wound” and encourages herself that “to be more like him (Jesus) we must first know who he is, if for no one else but for ourselves.”

I recommend this lovely book for anyone wishing to go but simply can’t, or for anyone who’s been and would love to have lingered longer.
