As an introduction, this book did a good job telling the story of Kyoto being the ancient capital of Japan and the centre of cultural & traditions. It have a lot of beautiful pictures! However, this book was published almost 50 years ago, so I'm wondering how Kyoto have changed since. What had to be sacrifice for modernization throughout the years?
Anyway, read this because after reading 福家堂本舗 1 Fukuyadou Honpo 1 series, I became so curious about the setting of this manga, that is Kyoto city & its people.
This book was published in 1979 and the remarkable thing is that most of its photos and prose exactly apply to the Kyoto of 2024 because of how tradition is valued.
As a foodie, my favorite passage reads, "Then there are the restaurants and drinking places. I am convinced that Kyoto cuisine ranks among the highest in the world...the Kyoto restaurants—not only the famous, expensive ones—often have a special charm. I have particularly affectionate memories of the restaurant in the grounds of the Nanzen-ji, where one sits outdoors on little platforms under the trees overlooking a pond...there cannot be many restaurants in the world with more pleasant surroundings."
