To many, a trek in the Oriental splendor of mountainous Nepal was the perfect vacation. But not to Lacey.
She loved her new job as secretary to Marcus Caradin, the brilliant, energetic owner of a travel agency for the adventuresome. She was pleased that they worked so well together, and that there was no awkward sexual tension between them.
Then Marcus insisted she accompany him on a trip to India and Nepal and experience firsthand the tours the agency offered. But once they had left the confines of the office, their safe, sexless relationship suddenly--and disturbingly--began to fall apart....
Re Miracle Man - this book doesn't seem to win much in the popularity ratings, but I have a certain fondness for this one. The H does start out a bit of a horse hiney, but he gets there in the end and I found the HEA believable.
This one opens with the 22 yr old h who works as the PA for the new owner of an adventure travel company being told that she will be having the pleasure of a trekking adventure through India and Nepal with her handsome, but kinda distant and stern boss while he sets up a new trekking tour. Since this means uncertain sleeping sites, bad, strange or no food, navigating incomprehensible paths through valleys and around mountains all while carrying everything you own in 40 litre rucksack and the h's idear of camping is a seedy motel with one electrical outlet that shorts out if you use your blow dryer, she isn't exactly jumping for joy and filled with the spirit of adventure.
(I can't say I blame her either. Though I have been know to try and navigate a few incomprehensible paths myself, I never go without at least a portable mani kit and the fixings for a rejuvenating facial. Mr. boogenhagen laughs at all the travel size product I pack, but he sure does appreciate the cooling peppermint foot cream and soothing honey facial moisturizer after a very long day of hiking. Besides I carry all of it in my pack on my own, so if I am willing to suffer for my beauty treatments, what can anyone else say? I am not willing to tolerate chipped nail polish, even on a hiking trail- we all have our personal deal breakers.)
Unfortunately Mr. Stern Bossy Pants tells the h she either goes or she is fired. Weeeeellll, the h likes her nice, steady and WELL PAYING job. She likes the things that job pays for, like her rent and food and maybe a new bottle of nail polish or two. So she agrees to go. Even though this is really going to play heck with her evening TV programming schedule and she is going to miss some good mid-season episodes.
The h tries to learn some Nepali as well, as Mr. Bossy Pants thinks it is good one of them has a grasp of the language and she thinks it is always a good idear to be able to ask 'where's the bathroom' in multiple dialects. Then she has to deal with her roommates' envy that she gets to slog through the Himalaya's with such a dishy guy. The h has met dishy guys who are obnoxious nematodes before when she lived with her mother, so she is pretty sure that Mr. Bossy Pants' devastating good looks are not going to win her heart. She is just hoping she doesn't collapse in some lost misty valley and become like those dried up Tibetan mummies that she sees in National Geographic. So it is off to India and Nepal we go.
When we catch up with the H and h again, they have wandered around India, had tiring negotiations on a block of suitable hotel rooms after trying out several dozen and ridden 450 miles on the Indian Railway system to the border. Fortunately, (or unfortunately cause of the livestock in the passenger area,) not on the roof of the train. The h is tired, hungry and has decided she just doesn't want to do this kinda job again ever, she wants to be a secretary or find a new job.
Sadly she still has the whole Himalaya Trek portion to get through and she is just hoping she can make it to the end. But before they can get started on the trekking portion, Mr. Bossy Pants has decided that they need a cleansing early morning Ganges river moment. Since they are close to the upper source, the water is actually clear and there aren't any dead bodies floating in it. The H buys her a marigold to put in her hair and while the sun is rising and the light is all sparkly and the river is majestically flowing by, the inevitable happens and the romance spark between the two of them is struck.
Mr. BP is not happy about this and he starts yelling at the h. Who isn't really delighted about this either, but she isn't going to take any abuse from him and she whips her red hair back from her face and tells him to control himself and stop being a big ninny, they are adults and he needs to act like it. Mr. Bossy Pants H is astounded that she would speak to him like that, and he pouts as they make their way to the start of the trekking, resentment over this unwanted sudden attraction radiating from every hair of his impossibly blond head.
The h doesn't care, he dragged her out of her cozy little stable routine with this wholly unwanted adventure, he can lump it. They start their trip from Kathmandu, where they check out local guest houses and places to sleep that usually involve sleeping in a big communal sleeping room with the host family and anyone else who shows up for a bed. The h and H have one further passionate kissing moment, but the H makes a remark that causes the h to freeze up, so she has to explain her some what tragic past after the H takes her rejection a bit personally.
The h's mother is a woman who couldn't live without a man, the smarmier and lechier the better. Inevitably one of those men tried it on with the h and molested her, he was choking the h into passivity when her mother walked in on them and believed the guy when he told her the h was trying it on with him and he was drunk and gave in. The h left home and the mom broke up with the guy a bit later. They managed to repair their relationship after a while, but since the h had always been the responsible one in the past, it wasn't causing her a ton of grief not to have to be the adult any more. Plus her mom moved on to an Italian designer who sends some lovely outfits and the h was more than capable of caring for herself. She just doesn't do good looking, passionate men - her only dates are with nice, boring and above all gentlemanly guys.
She explains all this to the H, and then he takes it to mean she thinks he is a pervy dude too. He sorta acts like he is offended by that, but the h doesn't dissuade him from his thinking, as it will hopefully be effective in keeping his hands off of her. The h does question the H's callousness about women and his lashing out when he is unwillingly interested in one who doesn't want a casual affair. The H is pouting again, but he explains that when he was 25, he met a lady he was totally and instantly physically attracted to.
They married right away and it was highly physical, until it wasn't and he just wasn't interested any more. The passion lasted about six months and the marriage lasted five years until he became impotent at the thought of his wife. She wanted to punish him for not finding her attractive anymore, so she catted around and then met a richer guy and took the H for a lot of money in the divorce.
The H had also grown up in a series of foster homes, so he had no real experience of any kind of healthy, loving relationship even though he did try to make the marriage work for a few years after he lost the lust for his ex. The ex just wasn't interested and he felt guilty for not wanting her, so he let her do whatever she wanted. Until the messy and ugly divorce, cause the ex is a drama queen, and then the H just decided any further lurve club expeditions would be of the short and casual kind. He feels the same attraction for the h as he did for his ex at first, and he has no intention of getting sucked into that mire again.
The h is fine with him keeping his distance, but she thinks he is a coward for not at least trying to develop a real relationship with someone. They have trekking to do tho and one night when the H is going back to his room after arguing with the h, he gets clubbed on the head and robbed. He is okay except for possible concussion and ready to do the trek, but he wants to send the h back to England - he tells her she should also find another job. The h isn't taking that lying down at all. She threatens to take him to the fair employment tribunal and start a suit if he fires her. She isn't losing a good paying job because it makes him uncomfortable, he can just be an adult and deal with his emotions - the H is astounded that she is standing up to him again. He accuses her of blackmail and tries to kick her out, but the doctor said he couldn't travel alone and so the h tells him even if he fires her, she is going trekking with him. His head injury is too severe to just wander about the Himalayas with no one to watch out for him.
They start their trek without porters, (tho the H thinks they will have to hire some for the tourists that do this trek cause carrying all that gear is really wearing,) and it soon becomes apparent that the H is having problems. He finally admits that he can't remember a large part of his life from the time he was 25 or so, he thinks he and the h have something more than a boss/employee relationship, but he can't figure out what and it is bothering him. The h quickly figures out the H has forgotten his marriage and their big fights over their mutual attraction, but she isn't going to tell him anything to enlighten him. She tells the H that he will probably remember on his own and they can find a doctor when they get to Pokhara, the Nepalese town they are trekking for. They continue on and are srsly seeing the desirability of porters for this trek when they figure out they are going to need to hire guides for this portion of the adventure as well, cause they are totally lost. The H was warned that the maps aren't really great for this area and Garmin GPS's haven't been invented yet.
They wind up camping under a little rock overhang for the night, and there is another almost passionate moment under the stars, but the H gets a gut feeling that he shouldn't do that, so the kissing doesn't go anywhere. They ponder being lost. (Fortunately all literature and fiction books about Himalayan trekking have an ironclad rule about including a helpful Buddhist monk living alone in isolation that feeds people and provides mimed directions to hopeless non-Nepali speaking travelers.) The h and H finally run into to him when their food runs out and he helpfully shares rice and lentils and then points them towards a shepherd hut and the way to Pokhara.
They make it to the shepherd hut, but it is too late to continue on and finally the big lurve club moment happens and the h is startled in saying she thinks she loves the H. The night ends in a rapture of passion and when the h wakes alone, she knows that the lurve clubbing doom has come. The H remembers everything and is now pouting about giving into his fatal attraction, the h tells him he is a big baby for not even trying and they both manage to ignore each other while they continue hiking. They do find a little village the next day and trade sleeping bags for a ride to Pokhara where they are able to make their way back to England.
Once they get back, the H tells the h they need a few days apart and the h gets home to have her mopey heart break moment. She decides to quit her job after a day or two of sadness and goes in on Sunday to clean out her desk. She just can't handle being around a man who is a relationship coward and won't even try. She feels better about traveling now tho, cause while it was a bit rough, on the whole it wasn't terrible and she had a great time at parts and saw lots of interesting things. It was just too bad that she is going to have years of heartbreak now over a man who can't love her back.
Then the H shows up and declares that he loves her, the h questions this because she knows the papers reported him out with a very attractive blonde woman on his arm. The H explains that the woman was his sister and it was her birthday and he took her out to cheer her up because her hubby had to go on a business trip. The h asks him how he is sure that this love won't burn out just like his marriage and the H tells her that he isn't sure it will work out, but he likes being with her even when they are fighting and he likes being with her even more when she stands up to him and that she fits him in more ways than just bed.
He also tells her he feels like they have to try, cause she feels totally right to him and he not only likes the passion, he likes HER as a person and he wants to travel the world with her cause she makes him feel complete. That is good enough for the h, she has discovered an unsuspected gambling wild trekking streak in herself and she happily commits to his proposal of marriage and travel by dragging him into his office for some thrilling climbs on the tower of power for the big HP HEA.
I liked this one overall, and not just because of the road trip trekking where everything bad that could happen did. I liked that the h grew out her safe little shell of a life, I liked that the H finally figured out the difference between physical attraction and a real relationship and I liked that JM showed us the development instead of just telling us. Believe me, several weeks in that kind of situation brings out the knots in any relationship, so I felt reasonably content that the H's feelings were real love and not just a fleeting bit of lust. This h stands up for herself several times and the H treats her with respect when she does. They are a cute couple. Even though the H pouted and had Bossy Pants moments, the h was more than a match for him and i believed that even if it does go bad eventually, the h would still manage a win.
JM isn't one of the top tier HP authors and I have always thought that was a bit a of a shame, her H's are clueless and kinda horsey rears sometimes, but her h's are always pretty assertive without being doormats or drama queens. Give this one a go if you haven't tried JM before, the story has a great exotic setting and the H does manage not to do anything too rotten and he gives a nice little declaration for the big true love moment. You could do a lot worse than this one for an HPlandia expedition, and the HEA is believable in the end.

Did the author think it was romantic for the hero to give heroine a long soliloquy, in graphic detail, about how sexually obsessed he was with his first wife and why he refused to enter any other commitment after his messy divorce? I wanted to barf! 🤮🤢

What. An. Ass. I’m talking about the hero, of course. Where do I even begin. The summary is just as the back blurb says: The “hero” has to travel overseas and takes the heroine, his personal secretary, with him. This change of scenery somehow creates sparks between thin. Ok, my mind is all jumbled up in just rage at the so-called hero so my review will probably be a mess – just like what I think of the hero – a mess. Spoilers alert. So the hero forces the heroine to come with him on this overseas business trip even though heroine doesn’t want to. Hero says her job is on the line. Now I wish I could say that this trip was a fun loving adventure trip. Im sorry but what I read DOES NOT sound enticing at all. And during this “unfun” trip, the hero was just SO cold. I did not see an ounce of pity coming from him for the poor heroine trudging along beside him. Because I abhor the hero, I was actually happy that he got knocked on the head by some attempted burglar. Why do I hate the hero? Let me count the ways. He was an arrogant piece of crap. So a “magical” moment appears in this book where somehow the hero and heroine are caught in suspended animation and kaboom, sparks, emotion, attraction opens up. This freakin’ hero is ALWAYS the one who’s making the moves on her. He doesn’t want to do anything to her because of his damaged past. Ok so then stop it! Get some self-control you fool! He makes it seem that he is unable to to stop this uncontrollable desire to bang the heroine! Oh yeah, his damaged past So the hero is damaged because he once felt this uncontrollable passion (lust) for his exwife. He proceeds to tell (shock, disgust, hurt) the heroine the so many ways he was like an animal to his exwife. But then… after six months he woke up and KABOOM. DESIRE is gone. But our honorable hero decides that he cannot break his exwife’s heart so he continues on with the marriage and continues to bang her (even though he doesn’t want to anymore) just to ease his I don’t know biological urge??? Anyhoo, I can’t even into all that. That is just YUCK to me. And he has the audacity to be angry that the ex-wife cheats on him and that the ensuing divorce proceeding becomes so intolerable, blah blah so now he only likes physical no meaning relationships and never again will he be subjected to this KABOOM passion in fear it just might disappear in one click like his exwife. Oh yeah, so you do know that he is feeling this animalistic passion lust for our heroine, right??!! Anyhoo, the bottomline is this hero is a pig and not once do I see him really truly care for the heroine. And man is that heroine a saint. I do not know why or should I say heroine, just dump this d-bag and go home!! This hero, it really seems like he was in lust with the heroine and I do not see why this “feeling” he has for the heroine is different. Yeah, sure so he sort of spilled his past a bit with the heroine (only after heroine kept asking him and he was talking about it sort of against his will) And I do not understand why they have to get married/he asks her to get married?! I mean if he had that horrible past of his, shouldn’t they both get to know each other more, make sure this is not just a lust filled attraction and then get married??!! Anyway, I hate the hero. Hate the book, and no he is NOT a miracle man ugh. The only miracle he’s done is making the heroine fall for him. Why why why?!! I'm giving a two stars because I did read the whole book and that he got knocked on the head (yay for that)
A man gets amnesia in Nepal because he was abandoned by his ex-wife with whom he only had sex. He then proceeds to tell his new love interest in detail about said sex. That’s part of this novel’s premise. Let that sink in.
Let's see. Hero has rich gold hair, not the usual black. Heroine is our standard redhead but she's the sensible type. She loves her PA job because it's stable and let's her have a nice, normal, boring life. Unfortunately her boss loves to travel - he owns a tour company - and he decides she should come with him on the road (aka bus with holes in the floor) and walking trip in India to Nepal.
Heroine isn't too thrilled but she likes her job and she appreciates the fact her boss and she have a 100% impersonal relationship with zero sexual overtones. Well! That all changes and hero resents being attracted to her, doesn't want to want her and refuses to even consider any kind of emotional tie. Heroine doesn't want a physical relationship, she doesn't want any relationship at all, but slowly, as they wend their way through the mountains and eat icky lentils and rice (except when they eat rice and lentils) she realizes she's attracted to him and it's far more than just physical.
Heroine challenges him to stop cowering from emotion and they have a few spats until one night, lost in the Himalayan foothills she stumbles to the wrong sleeping bag. Oops.
I loved having a heroine with a spine and strong sense of what she wants and does not want and who doesn't let the bossy hero boss her around.
This has some low ratings but I liked it a lot. Plus author put in a good amount of beautiful setting without writing a travelogue.

I am reading this author for the first time. Quite well written. Rather a cute story of a man and his Secretary. They are on a tour of India and Nepal to verify the possibility of introducing new adventure tours to these two countries. They are violently attracted to one another but both had had bad experiences in the past which is a hindrance. The travelogues are quite nice. As i am from India, I could quite relate to the descriptions which are very humorous. You can certainly read this book once. It brings a smile to one’s face quite often.,
