Understanding Tarot: Discover the tarot and find out what your cards really mean

Rate this book
Uncover the mysteries of the tarot with this comprehensive guide from tarot expert Liz Dean.

The Tarot is a secret system of symbols that has been used for almost 600 years, and is becoming increasingly popular today as people look for meaning and reassurance in our ever-changing and chaotic world. This form of spiritual counsel can be used to seek answers to life’s key “Will I find success in my chosen career?”, “Will I find true love?”, “What does the future hold?”, and “Will I be happy?”. This book empowers the reader by revealing the knowledge that each card brings, and how each reading can give a dynamic understanding of events, personalities, and relationships. With ten specific spreads to follow, along with sample readings and an extensive interpretation for each card, tarot expert Liz Dean gives you the confidence to approach the cards holistically. Freed from concentrating solely on the meaning of individual cards, you will begin to see them as a story or journey of life that gives you a clear picture of the past, present, and future.

I'm an author and an intuitive, writing primarily about tarot, creativity and manifesting. My latest project, HBO's Game of Thrones Tarot, was published in March 2018, along with The Ultimate Guide to Divination in April. I practise and teach tarot at Psychic Sisters within Selfridges, London; Crystal Moon Emporium in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear; and privately, via Skype. This August, 3-5, I teach at The Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York.

My background is in illustrated book publishing, commissioning authors (so I know what it's iike to be on both sides of the industry); and I co-edited Kindred Spirit magazine for a year or two. I've also worked as a copy-writer for publishers and the BBC, and work as a ghostwriter.

I hope you enjoy my books and I look forward to hearing from you.

This is a really great functional guide to tarot. I loved the sample spreads and integrate them into my practice regularly. The section on tarot’s historical origins was helpful as well.

Gorgeous book, but card meanings are not very comprehensive as there are only a few basic interpretations for each card. Very good for beginners.

I couldn't reccomend this book enough to people beginning their tarot journey. The book is written in such a way that its a quick easy read, but also explains the major arcana as though it's the fools story, meeting all the characters and actuation along the way. Thoroughly enjoyed this book 🌟

This one's nice because it's a bit more condensed and there's a little more history. There are also some spreads (not that I'm really into different spreads) and various details about colors and numerology.

This book is good but her Magnum Opus is "The Ultimate" tarot guide. Recommend that one for everyone. This one is a nice reference but the ultimate cannot be surpassed.

Shall we say some details are fairly unique to the author, but accessible and informative

A sort of boring history, followed by descriptions of the cards, which you can get online

Best I've read in this genre. Appreciated historical background. Well organized and clearly articulated.

If you are a buyer for a store, offering people a section for tarot decks, this is the only book we need you to sell alongside them. Displays old Italian decks, original looking decks for examples, as well as Egyptian decks and onward, outward, all around; plain cards pictured as well.
If you don't have a Rider Waite Smith deck, this book will be easy to follow, because it caters to tarot as an ancient practice that pre-dates Rider Waite Smith. If you do have a Rider Waite Smith, this is also the book for you because the cross referencing in this guide is comprehensive, explaining that system's pictography to back up other decks' art. So happy I have it as a beginner who wants to become serious.
