The high quality of traditional bookbinding is renowned, and while apprenticeships are difficult to come by today, this step-by-step guide by expert hand-binders is the next best thing. Teaching you valuable beginning- and intermediate-level skills, using their trademark hands-on approach, the Hollanders explain the basics of the craft, then guide you through five projects. Detailed instructions and photos help you to success. You’ll master the pamphlet book style, the flat-back book, the round-back book, and the construction of slipcases and clamshell boxes for decorative book protection. Along with formulas to help you navigate making your own custom-size books, an extensive glossary of bookbinding terms and a list of resources offer ongoing support. A gallery of the authors’ handmade books and boxes provides inspiration.
The main strength of this step by step guide is that instructions are clear, detailed and nearly every single step is illustrated with large color photographs. Many other introductions to bookbinding are difficult to follow for a novice with unclear directions and few illustrations. The only weakness of this guide is that it does not offer much in terms of varieties of techniques. If you want to attempt anything not covered in the examples, like adding ribbons markers to a book, you are on your own. That being said it is rather easy to supplement the techniques I found here with other guides from YouTube and the like. A great guide for the serious beginner.
I have built up a sizeable collection of fancy editions of books so am looking to find ways to protect them. This provides are really nice guide on how to build slip cases and tray cases (along with how to bind your own books, something else I would like to dive into a bit more). Will need to experiment a bit more on this one!
