A new kind of momcom role-playing adventure! Masato hears rumors of a newly built dungeon where whoever manages to make it through will be granted one wish. Since he's still well on his journey to try to become stronger than his mother, this could be just the answer to our hero's prayers. But the loudmouthed Anti-Mom Amante also has her sights on the dungeon's prize, and she and her goons from the Libere Rebellion will stop at nothing to keep Masato's party from getting there first. To make things worse, Mamako, his mother, is still dominating all the action...this time in a maid costume!!
Wasn't exactly sure where this one was going to go. It seems like each of these books so far have been centered around a different figure trying to stop the mom crew and this one is no different. However, this one seems to be leading in what seems to be a longer more overarching narrative with the villain. But was it good?
I mean, yeah it was fine.
This was definitely the weakest of the three so far, but considering the other 3's were 4/5's that's not saying too too much. The beginning and last third were both pretty good. it was the middle that was a bit dull.
After reading 2 of these, i can tell that the mom character does get to be a bit much at times. There's being a bit of a ditz, and then there's this lady who, i have to say, her only real personality is "being a mom". like, i don't think she has anything in her head other than "mom tips and tricks." she doesn't really seem to have any personality other than that. it makes you wonder what she was like when she was younger, before she had kids. Was she always just this super motherly character who played with dolls and treated everyone like her kids?
I feel this story could really benefit into growing her into her own person. I hope it does this later in the series because i'd love to dive into the psychology of why she acts the way she does, and perhaps have her personality grow to more than just "i'm a mom" because being a mom isn't a personality. it's funny at first, but the longer it goes on without her showing a personality other than "mom" it gets a little weird.
The first part of the story where the crew dresses as maids is fine and they try to build up a guild, and the end part is also fine where they try to beat the baddie of the book is also okay. the only part i didn't really like was when the main character got a bunch of moms together and tried to take on the challenge of the book, but they were useless and talked about how they had to go back and take in the laundry as well as make sure they locked the door, etc, and brought the story to a screeching halt to make mom jokes. It took up way too many pages and dragged the book down a bit.
All in all, all the characters except for the mom are coming into their own. they're developing and i'm learning more about them, but the mom really has to start having some development soon. she's the only one that hasn't and it's getting a bit weird.
Still though, not bad and will definitely read book 4. just not as good as 1 and 2 as the novelty is wearing off and they're not doing much with the mom's personality.
So we go from a reasonably enjoyable, halfway decent second entry into the realms of a pile of fetid dingo's kidneys in volume 3. This book was awful. The mom-service is once again just awkward and unpleasant. The cardboard cutout characters haven't had even one of their corrugations mashed, pinched, cut, marred, painted... they are exactly the same as they were before. Masato might have some minor growth at the very end of the volume -- maybe. But otherwise, it felt a lot more like a collection of stories based around a dungeon tower that was only there to connect the otherwise unconnected plot (?) points -- old gags, gags that the horse that was beaten after death with them has gone through the circle of life four or five times and we're now beating that dead horse with them.
Verdict: There is better comedy out there. I will likely read book 4 cause the library had it and with the quarantine I checked out nearly 30 books, that being one of them. At this rate I am not expecting much.
A slog to read through with the author trying to stretch the whole "mom jokes" thing further and further. In fact, this entire volume's setup was having our titular heroine Mamako create a "Mom Guild" and bring a whole bunch of middle-aged moms on a dungeon conquering trip... that results in a TON of disruptions when they inevitably keep forgetting to lock up or turn off the gas... I felt more annoyed than entertained really.
The one thing changed this time is moving away from the "evil mom of the volume" concept the first two books were going off. Instead this time the antagonist is a "anti-mothers" villain who's on a quest to destroy all mothers due some rather nonsensical reason or two. Being a joke of a series, she is predictably quite useless and gets easily trumped by Mamako in a barely comedic manner.
While the title might be funny for a volume or two, I really think it's overstayed its welcome by this one.
More adventures with the over powered Mom and her embarrassed son. Like in the previous books I found myself laughing out loud often and this time actually felt bad for Masato and the onslaught of Mothers.
This book was meh. I had a hard time liking the main characters and the main antagonist. The progression through the book felt uninteresting at best. Not as funny as I hoped. Quick read, although forgettable. There are many light novels better than this one.
