A Wish Upon a Star

Rate this book
Leslie Raymond spent the past two years wishing her life had taken a different turn. It’s time for a fresh start, a move across the country, and a new set of rules to help heal her heart—no straight women, no women with kids, and no commitment. But when she meets her new neighbors, the beautiful Erica and her special needs daughter, Siena, she struggles against the pull she immediately experiences.
Erica Cooper has learned to rely only on herself. She knows most people don’t stick around when the going gets tough. And when caring for a child with autism, the going can get tough fast. She is content with the quiet and emotionally safe life she’s constructed, but when they are befriended by their kind, playful, and—damn it—really hot new neighbor, the walls protecting her heart threaten to crumble.
So much for good intentions and firm resolutions—neither stand a chance when the stars align for love.

4.5 Stars. I have a real love/hate relationship going on with Levig. I loved, loved Embracing the Dawn. But then there is Threads of the Heart which I hated to the point it still makes me angry just thinking about it. Then I again found myself split on her next two books, A Heart to Call Home =good, Into Thin Air =blah. I’m batting 50/50 with Levig, which side would A Wish fall upon? I’m happy to say it’s back in the love category. While Embracing the Dawn is still my favorite, this easily sneaks into second place. I absolutely recommend this book to romance fans.

I’m late on reviewing this so I will keep this review on the shorter side and save you all a summary. There are some fantastic reviews for this book already out there. I do want to mention how great I thought Levig did on writing a child with Autism. I have a nephew who was diagnosed on the spectrum, heck most of us have loved ones or know somebody with Autism. Reading this book I could actually see my nephew in it. It was just so right on, probably one of the better written autistic child characters I have read about. Levig is definitely owed some props for being so realistic.

Besides an adorable kid character and probably the best dog in lesfic, this also had a really nice romance. It went at a really nice pace. You could feel the bond growing between the characters before anything romantic even happened. By the time they are ready to be a potential couple you actually believe it.

This was just a real pleasure to read. I have a feeling Levig can’t stand my reviewers since I can’t stand her books half the time. But boy when she gets it right, she really gets it right. And this book is the perfect example of getting it right.

Off topic: As some of you know I had surgery a week ago. It was a big enough surgery I will be out of work for a month. This was actually the first book I was able to read since getting out of the hospital. I just wanted to say that for the next few weeks my reviews might be shorter and farther apart while I’m recovering. I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things soon but please bear with me in the meantime.

Leslie has moved across the country hoping the change will help her move on from a bad relationship in her past. When the scruffy dog she picks up on the side of the road befriends the daughter of the woman next door Leslie realizes her desire to keep some distance from her new neighbours might be more challenging than she thought. It’s not long before she has that “Oh no, not again” feeling as she is drawn into a circle of friendship with Erica and Siena. It doesn’t help that she finds herself unavoidably attracted to Erica and charmed by Siena.

Erica is the neighbour next door with a special needs child. She has dealt with all the challenges, small victories and careful planning which come with raising an autistic child like Siena. Her life is ordered and orderly and like many moms with special needs kids, she puts her daughters needs above her own. She is attracted to her hot new neighbour and this attraction grows as she watches Leslie interact with Siena.

This lovely romance features a couple of mature women who begin as friends with undeniable attraction towards one another. Each has faced challenges in their lives and each are wary of changing their personal status quo. Enter two of the most endearing secondary characters, namely Siena and Gus the dog and watch the walls Erica and Leslie have thrown up around their hearts begin to crumble.Their daily interactions make this small romance a deep and moving experience. In the end I found myself thinking this is what love is all about, overcoming challenges and weathering the storms life throws at you and making a home filled with love.

A memorable and sweet read.

This is another beautiful story by Levig and the third one that I’ve read. On the first morning of Leslie Raymond’s return to her childhood home she is accosted and interrogated by 7-year-old Siena Cooper. Shortly thereafter she meets Erica, her neighbour and mother of Siena, and then Trent, Siena’s father. Although it’s easy to be attracted to the beautiful, silver-haired Erica, Leslie has no interest in straight women. To all intents and purposes, Leslie is grieving for a life lost and needs to heal which is why she decided to return to her late parents’ house. In spite of her promises to herself, Leslie is drawn to Siena in spite of, or perhaps because of, her Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Erica.

There are a number of things I loved about this novel. Both main characters are around 50-years-old and had the ability to communicate well even though they didn’t always employ it. There some great witty and sexy banter along with pretty serious conversations giving the dialogue a nice balance. The tension and chemistry between Leslie and Erica is built up and sustained for most of the novel (which is a slow-burn romance). Much of the drama happens at the beginning where the characters are trying to figure each other out rather than giving the reader a shiny, insta-love outlook and then trashing it in the last 10% for dramatic effect.

I don’t mind children in romance novels (as long as they don’t talk in baby talk) and Siena was a great character. She’s on the spectrum but high-functioning so she goes to school, can interact with people as long as she isn’t overwhelmed and is learning coping mechanisms for when she is. She’s also brutally honest, likes things organised and is not fond of being touched. She was integral to the story and her portrayal quite powerful. All too often children are chucked into a chapter for nothing more than a dose of cuteness.

The only real downside I had was that I felt the characters’ passion didn’t match the chemistry that had been sustained. Other than that, this is a wonderful read.

A Wish Upon a Star was so good that I was unable to put it down, so I read it in a day. That means it’s 5 star material. Jeannie Levig managed to give us a delicious slow burn romance between two women in their early 50ies. Leslie Raymond moves back to the house she grew up in. After having her heart broken she wants a fresh start and some new rules to live by. No straight women, no women with kids, and no commitment. Her neighbor Erica Cooper and her autistic daughter Siena are soon going to break all those rules.

Normally I’m not a fan of children being part of the package because they’re either written too precocious, take up too much of the storyline or it turns too twee for me to enjoy it. One of the three things happened and I still love it. Yes, Siena played a center part in the story but it was done so well I ate it up with a spoon. The author wrote a very believable 7 year-old on the spectrum and it was fascinating to see how Leslie and Erica interacted with her.

Leslie and Erica were two fantastic characters. Well fleshed-out and with an interesting inner dialogue. We get to be in both women’s heads as we alternate pov per chapter. They have good chemistry and the slow-burn has a nice build-up with a very sexy pay-off. The reader gets their money’s worth in that regard. A Wish Upon a Star is a truly heartwarming read.

f/f explicit

Themes: starting over, love thy neighbor, when your child has autism, Leslie is a dreamboat, momma bear, a jungle room, the blue couch, Chicago pizza, Gus the dog steals the show.

An unforgettable love story!

What a brilliant story! An epic love story about two women who both struggle with commitment issues, each for different reasons. The attraction is instant but their relationship isn't so simple. I love the way Erica encourages Siena to build essential social and life skills and I love how Leslie helps her to manage daily life with autism and how she interact with Siena. I was so moved by the unconditional love of Gus and the special bond between Gus and Siena. Watching the two of them brought tears to my eyes. This is an unforgettable romance and now one of my top favorites. I know I will reread it again and again.

5 Stars. I'm going to have to read more of Jeannie Levig's novels. I loved Embracing the Dawn and I loved this one, A Wish Upon a Star.

I'm not going to give an extensive review as others have already expressed what I thought better than I can. I especially loved how Siena was portrayed and who can't love Gus.

I enjoyed this read a lot more than Levig's "Embracing the Dawn".

"A Wish Upon a Star" is heavily angst filled and works on some miscommunication to move the plot forward but ultimately the romance is sweet, slow burn, and pretty well done. I liked all of the characters and the author did a good job of rounding out even the supporting cast. The story has a lot of warm fuzzies and I was satisfied with the read.

What makes the story unique compared to others is that the leads are in their fifties, one is bisexual and the other lesbian, and Siena, the seven year old daughter of Erica, has autism. I've seen some children in lesfic be written with autism in other books and, having two kids on the autism spectrum myself, I think this is one of the more accurate and better represented depictions of autism in a character though Siena is more mildly affected with low support needs. I can tell that the author did her research and I appreciate the efforts she put in to making Siena a real character. Her depiction left me satisfied to a large degree while also making me grit my teeth about her version being too easy to an extent.

Overall, a good read and I recommend.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book considering I have a god daughter that's also on the spectrum. I'm glad to say I really enjoyed it. Siena turned out to be a well written character and she definitely stole my heart in the end.

As for the main characters, who wouldn't like these women? Both in the their early 50's, they've lived through some very difficult (and heartbreaking) moments. I loved that the story was told from both of their POV's giving us readers a peek into their minds as they constantly had to remind themselves not to fall for the other. It created quit a delightful slow burn.

Finally we have a great set of secondary characters, of which Gus is probably the most important. Oh how I love that dog, he definitely stole several scenes and hearts in the book.

Give this a shot if you want a slow burn with well developed and interesting characters instead of another cookie cutter romance novel. Overall rating is a 4,25*

Leslie Raymond returns to her hometown in LA after a bad relationship that left her wary of straight women with children. Erica Cooper has a 7 year old girl with special needs and has learnt to stay independent and not to rely on anyone else. Not even her new next door neighbour Leslie who is so good to her daughter. It doesn’t hurt that Leslie is caring and gorgeous too. Will the stars align for them?

This is another fantastic book by Ms. Levig. It is not only a romance but also a story about maternal love, friendship and loyalty. Kudos to the author for featuring an older couple both in their early fifties but so full of life. Alongside them, there is Siena, Erica’s daughter who has ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder’. She is portrayed with incredible authenticity as both a child and a person with special needs. It seems that the author did her research well not only in Siena’s personality but also in her relationship with others.

They say that children and dogs steal a show and this is no exception. Side by side with the trio is Gus, a stray dog rescued by Leslie who is the epitome of the (wo)man’s best friend. I’m more of a cat person but Gus’s loyalty and bond with the mains really won my heart. Without him, the story would have lost some of its most inspiring and moving moments.

The romance is slow burn and the mains’ chemistry builds up exquisitely. These are women with some baggage but nothing feels contrived or forced. The dialogues are natural sounding and all the characters, main or secondary, human or otherwise, are well rounded and credible. Every single part of the story flows seamlessly and the setting is perfect. This has been a joy to read.

Overall, a fantastic romance with very credible characters and a believable story. 5 stars.

A heartwarming romance which I liked a lot. It’s my second book by this author. I’m not going to recap the story as there are so many reviews out there.

I instantly fell in love with Siena, she’s such a sweetheart and thoughtful character, you simply can’t not love her. Personally, I don’t know anybody with autism, but I read some about it. I think Levig has done a great job with creating her character, I’m impressed. And also how she and her mom are acting and reacting during a meltdown.

The main characters are in the early fifties what isn’t often the case in romances, but I liked it very much to read about women my age. Both are strong, caring yet vulnerable women, both with some baggage from previous relationships. There is just a little drama, but a lot of witty banter and serious talking. They stay with both feet on the ground and in their lives. The chemistry is slowly built up and believable and the romance isn’t rushed, what I very much appreciated.

Another co-star was the absolutely fantastic and adorable doggie, Gus. He stole my heart in the first few seconds. He’s the perfect buddy for Siena and a fluffy, sweet and protective friend for his chosen family.

Enjoyable and sweet romance recommended to everybody with a love for a heartwarming story

A Wish Upon a Star by Jeannie Levig is a fabulous read. This book has those little moments that pull at your heartstrings. This is a slow burn romance that uses tension in the most glorious way. Leving writes a balanced well-written book with characters that you just cannot get enough of. So damn good!

Leslie Raymond has had her heart shattered. The wounds are deep and extraordinarily painful she decides to move from her home in Florida back to her childhood residence in Burbank, California. This is a chance for a new beginning, a chance to heal and start fresh. What is she isn’t prepared for is her gorgeous neighbor and her amazing daughter.

Erica Cooper is a college professor and mother to Siena, a special needs child that that is on the autistic spectrum. Siena is immediately taken to Leslie and her dog. They strike up and unlikely friendship that is filled with understating, patience and kindness.

Erica and Leslie each have baggage and trust issues from previous relationships. They develop an easy friendship that builds as the story moves along. It feels real, I cannot say how impressive these characters are. They are three dimensional and are 100% relatable. Not to mention the chemistry between Erica and Leslie is out of this world.

What makes this book special is not just the two mains and their romance but how Siena and even Gus, the dog all play such an intricate role in the book. You cannot help but fall in love with them all. This is an amazing story. 5 stars

5 stars!

Absolutely loved this read. The characters, the story, the dialogue, the special needs angle, everything. A great read from start to finish. Even the cover is downright gorgeous. This is another book that hits on all the right notes for me while having very little downsides which aren't worth mentioning. I even shed a few tears at the end, something that hasn't happened in a while after finishing a book.

Jeannie Levig is getting better with each new work. Embracing the Dawn was good but this was awesome. I'm looking forward to her next book.

A gorgeous slow burn romance with heart and pain but truth and kindness.

I totally fell in love with all the characters, especially the special child Siena. Dear Leslie had a lot of pain and heartbreak to overcome, and Erica was so self reliant it was difficult for her to trust and let someone in.

It was very slow burn, to me, and it does take a while for them to really get together, I actually appreciated them getting to know eachother so well. While there was angst it was believable and not done in manipulative or shallow ways to cause distress to the reader or damage the characters reputations.

There was no drama for the sake of drama. You truly understood where each person was coming from and could empathize with their responses even if they were done for reasons of self preservation.

I also loved that the leading ladies were older, I believe both in their early to mid fifties. They also chose honesty and truth in their dealings, even when it was hard and other things were going on to disrupt that. Communication is always so sexy! And will always be the hallmark for a great book and especially a romance to me.

I just appreciated a delightful story that still had the right tone of women who had their issues but were trying to deal with them responsibly and finally found their way to eachother to create the family both had always wanted. I was actually quite sad to say goodbye to these characters, they just touched me so deeply.

ETA: OH I can't believe I forgot about the most touching character - Gus the dog! What a sweetheart! He really was a special guy knowing when Siena needed him for comfort and becoming her best friend, and also there when the other humans needed some doggo specialness.

ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The only other book of Levig’s that I’ve read was A Heart To Call Home, which I was lukewarm on. I had initially skipped this one, but a few of the reviews made me change my mind and I’m so glad I did. I loved everything about this book. Erica, and especially Leslie, are fantastic characters, (also older than those in most lesfic which made for a nice change). And while kids in stories can be hit and miss for me I adored Sienna (even though I’m about as found of discussing poop as Erica is, Sienna’s considerable mentions of poop were pretty amusing). And I love dogs, so I thought Gus was one of the best characters in the book, so sweet.

Sienna’s ASD was written beautifully, and I loved watching her interactions with her mother, Gus and Leslie, there were some lovely moments between them all. The secondary characters were all good too, and I liked that Trent wasn’t played for the villain. It would have been nice if Leslie could have had some more closure around her situation with Elijah, but probably more realistic (though also more heartbreaking) that she didn’t. I also liked that even when the two leads were having issues, both early in the book and late, that they resolved them by talking and they also put Sienna first.

Like I said, I loved everything about this, and I’m wondering if Sienna’s star wishing trick actually works, I wouldn’t mind having a Leslie type move in next door to me. :) 5 stars.

A very enjoyable read

I always like reading romance stories with the MCs being in there 30s or younger, 40s is usually pushing it for me. So color me surprised when I began reading this book with both MCs were in their 50s! But I couldnt not read it because the story was just so captivating to me and Leslie and Erica just drew me in along with Sienna and Gus. The secondary characters were great additions and the angst was kept at a minimum but played well when needed. Im not gonna lie I wish there was more news on the Elijah front as that story is just sad but oh well. I give this one a solid 5stars for me

This is my first time reading a book by Jeannie Levi’s and I really enjoyed it.

A Wish Upon a Star is about Leslie Raymond who moves back to her childhood home and first meets Siena who is special needs then her Mother Erica Cooper. Leslie is instantly taken by both child and mother, but she assumes Erica is married after meeting Trent who appears to be the husband. As the book progresses we see that both Leslie and Erica have their own set of issues that they need to work out in order to allow themselves to get involved with the next door neighbor.

I don’t typically read romances that include children. Mainly because they are normally an unnecessary distraction for me. I am very happy I took a chance with this one. I really enjoyed Siena who is autistic. I am not sure this book would have been as good if it wasn't for her. I don’t know much about autism, but this book gave me some insight on what living with autism could be like.

One thing I look for in a romance novel is chemistry between the two main characters. Leslie and Erica for sure have chemistry. I loved how the author decided to show that women in their 50’s can still be attractive and still be interested in sex and romance. This book is a slow burn romance so don’t expect lots of hot passionate sex. This fact doesn’t take anything from this book. I typically like more in the sex department, but the chemistry is good so it makes up for the lack of sex.

I rate this one 4.25 stars.

To me, this was a near perfect romance. Levig found the right way to show these characters gradually developing feelings and attachments. No insta-romance here. No scratching your head with circumstances. No projecting chemistry because you want it. This felt as authentic as anything I've read before.

Leslie is a 50 something lesbian that leaves Florida to return to her hometown after her life is basically stolen from her. She becomes enchanted by the young next door neighbor. And so do the readers.. Then Leslie meets the 50 something mother next door soon after.

What follows is a beautiful story of starting over, selflessness, letting go, learning to accept love and support, and falling in.

There is an appropriate amount of drama. My heart hurt a little bit at times. There was a part where Leslie was making an apology to the quirky young girl and I melted. I love great dialogue.

I don' think I can even critique this at all. Adored this so much.

I was provided an ARC from Bold Strokes Book through Netgalley for my honest remove.

What a lovely and heartwarming story by Jeannie Levig and one I won’t forget anytime soon.

Leslie Raymond has lost everything she loved dearly and is struggling to move past the pain she has felt since the day her family walked out the door. She moves back home to California to live in her parent’s home, which is empty since they passed away. What she doesn’t expect is to meet the most alluring neighbour, Erica with the most adorable little girl. But she has to keep the few rules around her heart which are: no straight women and more importantly, no women with children, but when she develops a friendship with her neighbour, Erica and her young daughter, Siena... all bets are off.

This was a beautiful story of two fiercely independent women with big hearts and a secret weakness for one another. It was great to watch both Erica and Leslie grow together in the story but for me, Siena stole the show. She was spunky and fun. She made Leslie feel part of their family from the very beginning. The story would have been nothing without her in it.

I also really liked the cheeky flirting between Leslie and Erica and it made for some good banter and fun chemistry between the two. Talking of chemistry, it was quite apparent from the get go that Leslie and Erica have it for each other in spades. Add that to the love that is growing between them and it’s a real soul mates story.

For me the epilogue was the real winner. I cried my eyes out. What an amazing way to end a book. Don’t want to say too much but this rounded the whole story off beautifully and didn’t leave me wanting more from the characters or story.

This book had me enthralled from the word go and I actually finished it in one day. I think it is currently fighting for first place with Embracing The Dawn on my Jeannie Levig favourites.

I am head over heels in love with this book.

When Leslie's parents die and leave her with her old childhood home in California, she packs the bare minimum belongings, jumps in her car and drives west. She isn't prepared for the attractive neighbour, Erica, who lives next door, and her endearing daughter Siena, who is autistic. Leslie is no stranger to heartbreak and she's determined to keep Erica at arms length, just friends. But their attraction is nearly impossible to deny. Add to the mix Siena and Leslie's friendship, and the way they all three fit seamlessly into each other's lives, makes the lines between friendship and family blur.

Not going to lie, I was a little hesitant reading this book because the women were a lot older than I am and I wan't sure if I could connect to the characters and the place they are in their lives. I'm only mentioning this for two reasons...For one, if anyone else in their late teens or early twenties and they're hesitating because of this silly reason, because it is silly, you shouldn't. This book is perfect. The characters are totally relatable. The story heartwarming. And the chemistry is out of this world. The second reason, because I think it speaks to the magnitude of talent Jeannie Levig has. She can create these gorgeous three dimensional characters, that are so relatable that it doesn't matter where you are in life you'll connect with them. You'll laugh with them, cry with them, love with them. It's everything. I remember reading one of her previous books, where one character was a convict, and I remember being hesitant and thinking what could I have in common with this person that I'll be able to get lost in the book and this romance. I was 100% wrong. I also highly recommend Embracing the Dawn because I was totally enamoured by that book as well.

This was a beautiful character driven book. Gus and Siena stole my heart and stole the show. I loved the evolution of Trent's character. Erica and Leslie are so badass and strong and I love the way two independent women come to trust each other and understand you don't have to lose your independence to be able to depend on someone.

I loved the simplicity of this book. There was nothing wild, just the everyday, but the everyday can be so so special.

There was one tiny (but big) oops - it's Colombia not Columbia (Columbian roast coffee).

Very touching story ... very well written ..

The only thing that bothered me is that the end of the book has been too rushed ...
=> Based on the entire novel develpment where we had details, it feels like a part has been cut/removed to move forward and reach faster the end of the book and it's a shame.

This was such a delightful read! There isn't a single thing I didn't like about it. I love the entire cast of characters. I'm not always a fan of children in books, but Siena was charming, and the author did a good job portraying a high functioning child on the spectrum. Gus was the perfect dog, I wish I could adopt him. Lovely contemporary romance, I highly recommend!

“I can’t stand seeing my failures in her eyes.” Boy oh boy if that’s ever a theme for a failed relationship I don’t know what is.

Firstly, such a treat to see the two main characters are not only in their 50’s but sexy, passionate, and vibrant women. Leslie Raymond has come back to her childhood home and day one meets her next door neighbor, Erica Cooper and her daughter, Sienna, who has Autism. Leslie and Sienna establish an immediate connection to each other as well as to a stray mutt that has made himself Leslie’s new dog. That’s happened to me so I got a kick out of the I’ll just keep him till I find him a real home scenario.

But things get hard after that initial loveliness because older people carry lots of stories, good and bad, in their heads and hearts and it’s harder to open up to new possibilities when all you’ve seen are your failures in someone else’s eyes. Both Leslie and Erica carry those burdens and the book follows their individual journeys to make peace with the past to be able to create something new together. It’s an enchanting book full of poignant moments that make you gasp in their revelation and most definitely worth the read. I read this book courtesy of Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting read.

It’s nice to read a book where the MCs are in their fifties…which was the case with A Wish Upon A Star. What is more interesting, which was a first for me and had me reading AWUAS, is that one of the MCs, 51 y/o Erica Cooper had a 7 y/o daughter, Siena, with a husband who just doesn’t get what it takes to be a dad, especially one who is on a spectrum. And along came 53 y/o Leslie who is on the mend, having her heart broken when her partner left together with her son, Elijah, without much of a goodbye….all because her ex wants a man as her partner and in a family. What is really sad and cruel is that Leslie can’t see meet/see Elijah, whom she has looked after and dotes on since he was born…just because she has no real claim over him as she is not the biological or adopted mother. As much as Leslie wanted to be close with Erica and Siena, she hold back and stay away from them cos she just doesn’t want to be hurt ever again, especially since Erica had a husband (now ex) and they both had Siena together…. You know the saying, once bitten twice shy… that saying is so apt for Leslie.

I love when an author makes a child in their book three dimensional character, realistic, and an integral part of the story. Leslie's innate interactions as well as her active observation and educating herself on how to understand, interact, and respond to Siena her young autistic neighbor endeared her to me from the get-go. Siena and Gus the dog stole my heart from the beginning of the book. Leslie and Erica's journey throughout the book from neighbors to friendship to love while battling through their attraction, fears, trust issues, and their moments of both open and honest and reticent communication was realistic and made the ending even more sweet.
