Amazing how possible it is to live with so little

First published in 1855, I'd recommend this book to anyone writing historical fiction. It is an exhaustive description of life in early Canada, including recipes and directions for cooking in a fireplace with a cooking pot. (She advises buying a stove if one can afford it because there's less danger of burning your skirts than there is at a hearth!) She also has gardening tips that I think I'll try. Those never go out of date!

Among other things, very practical advice on keeping track of your serving spoons and dishes when going to a potluck, lest you fail to bring them home again.

Anyone with a garden would be well advised to read her tips; settlers could not afford to fail. I will also be trying a few of her recipes.
