You know you've got problems when being hunted by a Serbian hitman is the least of your worries...
Balkan gangsters, corporate spies and a fugitive killer are all on the loose in London, but when a body shows up, all of the evidence points to the victim's wife.
Is it a domestic dispute, or part of a much bigger conspiracy? Fresh from suspension for alleged corruption, DCI Graham March seems far too eager to close the case.
Despite being warned off by his editor, journalist Danny Churchill wants to find the truth - and enlists the help of his flatmate: fashion photographer Anna Burgin. But when an old friend gets involved, and reports emerge of a huge shipment of weapons heading to the UK, it soon becomes their most complex, dangerous and action-packed investigation so far.
And as Danny and Anna get closer to the facts, the more the odds seem terrifyingly stacked against them.
Packed with twists, intrigue and dark humour, Fade To Silence is a gripping British mystery thriller, and book 4 in the bestselling Anna Burgin series.
Hi, I'm David Bradwell, author of the Anna Burgin series of mystery thrillers.
I'm based in Hitchin in Hertfordshire in the UK, although I'm originally from the north east. When I'm not writing the series (which largely involves lots of late nights and candles) I run a hosiery retail company and - when opportunity permits - indulge in a bit of screen acting.
If you like the books, or indeed have any feedback, good or bad, please let me know. I'd love to hear from you.
Fade to Silence is the third full book in the excellent Anna Burgin series, about a sassy fashion photographer, her long-term flatmate and apparently unrequited love interest Danny Churchill and their mysterious friend Clare Woodbrook. Each book could be read as a stand-alone but they’ll make much more sense if read in order. This one is set in London in 1995, several months after the events of Out of the Red.
When Danny hears that DCI March, inexplicably back at work in spite of all his crimes, has arrested a young woman for the murder of her banker husband, despite then man’s connection to a Serbian gangster, he is determined to investigate further. Clare shows up in her Mr Ben way, and whisks him and Anna off to Bulgaria to meet one of her associates as they are worried that the end of war in the Balkans will lead to criminals importing weapons into the UK, but they leave with more questions than answers and have to once again go in the run from shady bad guys, trumped up charges and the evil machinations of March, who is determined to get his revenge this time...
This is the second book I’ve read recently that features Eastern European criminals and a backdrop of the aftermath of the 90s wars in the region but I still find it all very confusing. This didn’t matter as far as the plot went and while there were quite a few characters to keep track of, it all made sense eventually. I really like Anna as a character, she’s cheeky but brave and devoted to Danny, but also increasingly to Clare, which is an interesting progression through the series. There’s both a murder mystery and a gangster story and several car chases and near-death moments for our dauntless trio. The writing is again flawless without being flowery and manages the mix of Anna’s POV and third person without it getting confusing.
I received this ARC for free from the author by joining David’s Advance Reader Team and am grateful for the opportunity to review the whole series.
FADE TO SILENCE is Book 4 in the Anna Burgin Series. I've not read the first three, but I am definitely going to rectify that. I discovered FADE TO SILENCE through a review offer at Hidden Gems Books, and I'm very happy I did. This mystery is engrossing, complicated, and the protagonists, especially fashion photographer Anna, are impressively snarky. The author does dialogue excellently, and even better, crafts terrifically twisty plot lines. Anna and her long-term flatmate/best friend, journalist Danny Churchill, are thrown right into the center of the machinations of disgraced, then reinstated Detective Chief Inspector Graham March of London's Metropolitan Police, a man whose fingers are deep into many criminal pies on a large scale, who has too many corrupt friends in high places, and who holds long grudges. Since Danny's investigative journalism and that of Danny's former superior, Clare Woodbrook, exposed March's machinations, the latter is neither going to forget nor forgive, and soon a series of hardships strike at Danny, the kind of frame that he can't escape and can't expose. Additionally, Clare, who long ago "disappeared" and is kind of an international broker and deal-maker, always covertly, inserts herself again into the lives of Anna and Danny, insisting that the end of the Balkan War (this takes place in 1995) predicts massive influxes of black market weapons into the UK, a nation traditionally relatively free from gun violence (unlike the U.S.)
To Read or Not to Read: This is a fast pace mystery/thriller. If that's your thing, I would say definitely read it. However, take the time to orient yourself by reading the first in the series. I was given this book to review without the prequel and there a MANY references without an explanation that are made about the previous story. There are inside jokes that you are not privy to, comments about characters storyline that you don't know, etc. This left a bit of a sour note for me. I think the story would have been much richer had I read the previous novel to have the references to pull from. Either that or the author could have explained a bit more of what happened in this book.
Overall: Entertaining read overall. Very fast paced and I appreciated the short chapters - being a mom I don't have time to sit down and read 80 pages in a chapter so books with chapters I can finish in approx. 10 min are my fav. (Yes, I'm that weirdo that likes to finish on a chapter end!) I really liked the characters, Clare especially. They are well developed and each independent of each other. The storyline is well written, where the author even points out the limitations of what the characters see. The ending is wrapped up well, but still gives room for a follow up.
Other Interesting Notes: Violence, stalking, police corruption, are all triggers here. Bradwell, keeps things moving with fast pace car chases and human "hunting" scenarios. There are twists and turns all along the way that keep you guessing. There is a bit of unrequited love, but there is a sort of conclusion to it.
Clare Woodbrook, the mysterious manipulator of millionaire gangsters, semi-good and mega-bad alike. Walks a tightrope in her negotiations with several forces from the Balkans and Germany, and their go between, DCI Graham March, who smugly plays one of them against the other. And, once again, Danny and Anna are caught in the middle. When a banker is murdered, March quickly arrests the widow, but Danny is not convinced. Hounded by his Echo editor to leave his vendetta against March alone and bring in copy for other investigations, he and Anna try following the cop to find out what he is really doing. He in turn employs some pitiless killers to get rid of the pair. And in the meanwhile, a huge shipment of weapons is heading for Britain... Frustratingly, and almost beyond belief, Danny is still unaware that Anna is madly in love with him, convinced the relationship is strictly platonic. In desperation, Anna dates a seemingly accidently met man who has orders to get rid of her. (A spoiler, I suppose, but, come on! Who wouldn’t guess?) Still, the whole series is riddled (haha) with twists, so who knows? See the review on the whole series at www.bookpostmortem.wordpress.com
I received this book free as an ARC reader for voluntary review.
Synopsis: Best friends, fashion-photographer-Anna and instigative-journalist-Danny, team up again to help the ever mysterious Clair bring down a ring of eastern European (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian) gun smugglers… and one very evil corrupt cop.
What I did not like: It’s odd to that this is being published now when it’s written about 1995, especially since it isn’t written like a memoir. Readers are going to get a kick (maybe not in a good way) about Netscape browsers and floppy disks. I never did figure out what the title had to do with anything, and where was British intelligence in all of this?
What I did like: Anna is a fun, smart, long-suffering character. I love that the book features strong women.
Review: It took me a little while to get invested in the characters (I haven’t read the first 3 books in the series). Anna, Danny, and Clair have a back story that must be central to their interactions but it never fully explained. Had I picked this book up off a dusty library shelf I would have been pleased with a novel written 24 years ago; but as a modern novel I found it a bit lacking.
An excellent thriller with great twists and turns throughout the plot. Believable characters that you can identify with. The villains are villains and the goodies are goodies and you find yourself rooting for one and wanting the demise of the other. Terrific ending which keeps you on tender hooks right until the end. Once I started reading I just wanted to keep going until I found out what happened. The only disappointment was it had to finish. David Bradwell has captured the essence of the era and rattles the story along at a fine pace drawing you in, leaving you breathless at times and definitely wanting to be part of the whole scene. Already looking forward to his next book!
I have really enjoyed this series after accidentally stumbling across it a few months ago and have now read the three novels in rapid succession (I haven't read the prequel, however!) Like the previous books, Fade To Silence is a great yarn that zips along at a great pace with plenty of twists and turns on the way. The plot is expertly crafted, the characters well defined and the dialogue smart and full of humour. This book seemed a little shorter than the others but that may have been because it was difficult to leave alone. It will be interesting to see how far and in what direction the author can take the main characters while maintaining the freshness that they bring to the genre.
Book 4 in the Anna Burgin series by David Bradwell definitely qualifies up with some of the best and most entertaining stories I have read in a long time. There were definitely twists and intrigue galore as Anna and Danny again try to solve a mystery they have been advised and threatened to drop and walk away from. Of course they don't, or the story would be very short. What it is though, is a very attention grabbing tale from the first to the last page. Once again the reader has to hope the good guys come out on top, even though it doesn't look very good for them from their point of view. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.
A great mystery thriller and the best in the series so far, it features some fascinating characters and an explosive plot concerning Balkan gangsters. The book is set in the late 1990s and it really evokes the period accurately, I especially loved the descriptions of the gadgets and technology of the era. The story is satisfyingly complex and layered, meaning that it really held my attention right through to the last page. I received an advance copy of this book, but have voluntarily written this honest review.
The thriller continues with Anna, Danny and Clare. Again DI March is up to his usual tricks and hedging his best with friend and foe. Trouble is that he is unable to tell the difference. Good story involving the end of the war in Serbia and the different factions involved. This gets the three main characters into the fray and Danny wanted for many crimes he did not commit.
I received a free copy of this book to review. WOW !!! This was a wild roller coaster ride!!! Lots of mystery! This being the fourth book in the series I was missing backstory, but I was able to get a good handle on the story. I will definitely find and read the other books in this series. I am a fan!!!
A photographer, a journalist and a behind the scenes friend take on corruption in the British police. Twists, turns, deaths and shady international characters take you on an unpredictable journey that you won’t be able to put down.
The fourth book by this author and my favourite. There wasn’t so much jumping from one situation to another and was a book you could put down and come back to later easily. There was a rush of intrigue, mystery and suspense towards the end which was brilliant.
Never a dull moment as the quest to catch DCI March at his illegal activities continues. Anna and Danny always find themselves in danger and needing rescue by the illusive Clare.
