A NEW ERA KICKS OFF! Scouted is the first book in the football-tastic Roy of the Rovers fiction series. Part of the first season, this exciting series is written by award-winning author Tom Palmer.
Roy Race is a totally normal 16-year-old. He just happens to be the best striker in Melchester, too.
Roy’s always dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and playing for Melchester Rovers, the team he’s supported his entire life, but he never thought he’d get a chance – until now. Rovers are on the lookout for new players, but is Roy good enough to catch the scout’s eye? He’ll have to be fitter, stronger and more determined than ever – but if he’s going to become Roy of the Rovers, now’s the time!

Brilliant book for kids who love football, and well written and fast paced to keep them hooked. I also found the other elements involving his family life unexpected and very touching. Great for ages 9+.
As an avid reader of the Roy of the Rovers comic in the 80s, I was interested to see how this reboot would bring our hero to life again. This series is in the shape of novel / graphic novel alternatively, and book one introduces young Roy Race who is desperate to play for Melchester Rovers. But Roy doesn’t have an easy life, and I found the moments with his father quite emotional and touching. A great start to the new era of Roy of the Rovers.
Roy is really good at football but sometimes his family issues get in the way of him doing what he loves the most. I really liked this book because it was a big type and really easy to read. I liked that there were pictures too and that it wasn't ALL about football, but more about Roy's life altogether. The book feels like it finishes halfway through the story though, so I need to read the next one to find out if Roy achieves his goal.
A football book in the tradition of such writers as Michael Hardcastle and Martin Waddell. No prior knowledge of Roy of the Rovers needed but some lovely references for older fans. Hope it is the start of a long series.
Read with my 7 year old who is football mad, really enjoyed it and left us wanted to read the next one in the series. Words are easy to understand and it flows well.
