Really well done. Tons of concept art from various stages along the way. Lots of commentary by the artists, screenwriters, directors, even the author of the books the series is based on. Absolutely gorgeous.
Received a review copy from Dark Horse and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.
In my honest opinion The Hidden World is one of the most beautifully animated movies to be ever made and I'm convinced to believe that everyone who has seen the film will agree with me. It's no surprise considering the fact that this movie took nearly five years to make because that's the amount of work went into it.
All of these illustrations took my breath away time and again and especially the ones with the drawings of the Hidden World and how it got created. And all of the drawings of Toothless flying around with the Lightfurry in the sky. I loved all of them!! It was astonishing to see how the characters themselves have also changed since the first movie and how they've grown from young teenagers into adults.
I've put this book on a nice spot on my shelf so that the front cover is on display and I can always look at it in awe and remember how much love and memories this franchise has brought into my life. I'm going to be immensely saddened because this is the end and we will not be receiving anything new after this and I still need to let that sink in.
A great send-off for How to Train Your Dragon! I loved seeing the concept art and the locations that they created for the backgrounds in this new and final installment. My only qualm is that I wish there had been a little bit more character art that was from the rough pencil design in pre-production. Some more of the art of Nico Marlet would have been nice to see, since he started off from the original film doing a lot of that character work. Also would have enjoyed a couple more of the early sketches of Simon Otto, and maybe even a couple more of the background layouts from Pierre-Olivier Vincent. A lot of it seemed to be more orientated towards written commentary and the three-dimensional aspects now, which I get because technology has obviously advanced. Guess I'm a bit of a stickler because I like the 2D and the rough stuff to see where that goes from there in progression. Probably why I enjoyed a lot of the sketches of the Dragons including the young furies that pop up in the film later. Still it definitely gave us some backstory, as well as filled in the gaps for ending this movie trilogy.
Once again, BEAUTIFULLY done Art Book. The art dis not disappoint and I LOVED seeing some the gorgeous images from the movie that I couldn't truly appreciate while watching the film because of the angle. If you haven't, look up Stoick's statue, guys. It's amazing 😍 I loved the details and explanations of why and how the characters changed....super glad I got a copy of this. A MUST READ for any HTTYD fan!
I received this book as an ARC from Dark Horse Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
How to Train Your Dragon both the book series and the movies are very popular with the patrons at our library. This book was filled with beautiful artwork that brought the movie to life and having not seen How to Train Your Dragon Hidden World just yet, this book got me so excited to see the movie and see how the story plays out and ends once and for all. We have done many How To Train Your Dragon programs and using this book we have so many ideas to choose from that everyone is just going to love.
We will consider adding this to our Movie Book collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
As was the case with the movies, this third and final book is the perfect ending to the trilogy. There were a lot of more polished-looking art pieces in here, but still enough concept work to ensure we got to truly see the development from page to screen. This one had a long introduction that summarized the third movie’s story, which I actually really enjoyed to preface all of the following pages. I loved the deep dive into many of the characters designs, with my absolute favorite part being the look into each character’s flight suit/dragon scale armor. The commentary in this one was awesome - you can really tell how much care and love each production person poured into this project. Overall, these three art books are absolutely perfect companions to the movies, and are a must-have for any HTTYD fan.
Sometimes I have to skip ‘Together From Afar’ by Jonsi whenever it shuffles in my playlist because I get so damn emotional listening to it.
This book felt like saying goodbye to old friends who you’ve known for years but it’ll be okay because you’ll be together from afar.
This is far from an art book, there is plenty of commentary from directors, producers, animation designers and even the author of the original books herself. The art is s t u n n i n g, and the interviews and commentary are organised coherently. If you’re a big HTTYD fan or if you know someone who is, this is the best gift to give them. I got my copy as a gift, and I’m going to treasure it forever.
although I had already appreciated the art of the movie, reading this book, and looking into a bit of what the whole crew had to do to get to the point of one of the best movies ever, makes me appreciate even more. still a shame that HTTYD: The Hidden World didn't win the Animated Film Oscar 2020, but it will always be a winner in my books. even if you aren't a HTTYD fan, I totally recommend this if you are an art lover, movie enthusiast or anything else.
Toothless and Hicuup/Astrid forever! <3 I'm fairly new into this world (about a year ago I watched the first movie for the first time), but now I am solidly planted in it, haha. An excellent read for fans!
Amé demasiado las fotografías, la manera en que esta hecho el libro es simplemente precioso. Me quedo sin palabras para volver a describir como fue ver las imágenes y las palabras de todos♥
This book is so amazing, just a taste into the world design of HTTYD in the 3rd movie, how they made it so realistic, and the art designs of the outfits and even the nightlights! I can’t wait to draw them :D
