My son presented this book for my birthday, which fortunately falls in January, so I can make full use of the contents through 2019. Featuring twelve monthly charts of the night sky for Britain and Ireland. So, to quote the BBC's Sky at Night magazine "If you buy just one guide, you won't do better than this." As I already subscribe to the Sky at Night mag I will now receive two monthly sky guides.
However, for free, I have the superb software package of Stellarium which is what I use prior to any observing session with my telescope, a Celestron beast that is featured on page 88 of this guide.
I would certainly recommend this Philip's guide for those new to night sky watching.
Checking Couper's star information with Stellarium her distances differ somewhat in January's main constellation of Orion. Betelgeuse is given as 640 light years away, in Stellarium only 427. Rigel 860 light years, in Stallarium 772. Saiph 650 to 720. Alnitak 700 to 817. Mintaka 690 to 916. Just sayin'.
