This is the behind-the-scenes story of Noel's biggest ever world tour with his band The High Flying Birds and the making of his critically-acclaimed album Who Built the Moon? Noel has had a momentous year, with his third number one solo album, a Mercury Prize nomination and a 72-date tour across the globe, and this book documents every step of the journey. Through the lens of former official Man City photographer Sharon Latham, who was granted unprecedented access, this is Noel Gallagher as you've never seen him before. Curated by the man himself, the book contains hundreds of unseen, stunning shots from both on- and off-stage that take the reader right across the US, Canada, UK & Ireland, Europe, and Southeast Asia, alongside candid interviews and anecdotes from Noel as well as contributions from his band and crew. A must-have book for fans who want to join one of music's greatest heroes through one of the most memorable moments of his life.
Noel Thomas David Gallagher (born 29 May 1967) is an English musician, best known as the former co-lead vocalist (with younger brother Liam Gallagher), principal songwriter, and lead guitarist of English rock band Oasis.
Raised in Burnage, Manchester with Liam, Gallagher began learning guitar at the age of thirteen. After a series of odd jobs in construction, Gallagher joined local Manchester band, Inspiral Carpets as a roadie and technician in 1988. Whilst touring with the Inspiral Carpets, he learnt that Liam had formed a band of his own, known as The Rain, which eventually took on the name "Oasis". After Gallagher returned to England, he was invited by Liam to join Oasis as songwriter and guitarist.
Oasis' debut album, Definitely Maybe (1994) marked the beginning of the band's rise to fame as head of the Britpop movement. Oasis' second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? became a massive commercial smash. However, Britpop soon declined in popularity, and Oasis' next three albums failed to revive its popularity, however the band's final two albums Don't Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008) were hailed as the bands best efforts in over a decade, which found the band renewed success. On 28 August 2009, following an altercation with Liam prior to a gig in Paris, Noel announced his departure from Oasis and on 23 October 2009, he confirmed he would embark on a solo career.
Noel's run with Oasis was marked by turbulence, especially during the peak of Britpop, during which Noel was involved in several disputes with Liam, and the brothers' fights and wild lifestyles regularly made headlines in British tabloid newspapers. Noel (along with Oasis) also shared a personal rivalry with fellow Britpop band Blur. However, Noel was often regarded as the spear-head of the Britpop movement, and at one point of time, NME termed a number of Britpop bands (including The Boo Radleys, Ocean Colour Scene and Cast) as "Noelrock", citing Gallagher's influence on their success. Many have praised Gallagher's songwriting, with George Martin claiming Noel to be 'the finest songwriter of his generation'.
Nice read. A good insight into the Stranded on the Earth World Tour and the concepts behind both the tour and the ‘Who built the moon?’ album. Noel is an incredibly talented musician and this book really encapsulated the feel for the direction he wants to take the band into.
If you’re a fan of High Flying Birds this is a good read! Very psychedelic- would recommend !
Enjoyed this book; the photos and the text....plus I was at the Dublin concert mentioned in the book, so that was nice! I think Noel Gallagher is very witty and his music is the soundtrack of my life basically, from when he was in Oasis. It's great that he has developed brilliantly into a solo artist fronting his own band.
Noel Gallagher himself has described this book as one "for people's Christmas stockings". This might suggest it is nothing more than a glossy annual, which is perhaps exactly what it is. Partly.
The experimental nature of his third solo album, "Who Built The Moon", is possibly overdone. If Noel has expanded his pallet, it has been to move beyond pilfering the classic records of the Sixties and to start lifting elements from the Eighties. Equally, I'll confess, I really enjoyed that album; a glorious sunburst of psychedelic pop.
Having seen the supporting tour at Leeds Arena, I can say it was the first time I have seen a show involving Noel that was visually interesting, with its light show and slightly more mobile band members. Face facts, if this book documented an Oasis tour, it would be a dreary thing indeed. This coffee table photograph book captures the warm-hearted camaraderie of the current line-up of the High Flying Birds and makes for an inspiring read in its own modest way.
Basically a photo book of their tour with a lot of commentary from Noel and other members of the band with introductions to every member of the band, A very enjoyable experience, a fascinating record of life on the road worldwide. Noel states at the end of the book that he wanted the book to be upbeat and 'when people look at the pictures they should think 'I wish I was there'' and I can say that I got that feeling. Gonna be seeking out High Flying Birds albums now. I didn't expect it but Noel comes over as a pretty nice guy and clever with it.
