Dark Angel #1

Purgatory's Angel

Rate this book
Everyone has a dark side where their inner demons roam. When the devils of our nightmares murder in their sleep, only one can stop them.

Jaime Connor was once one of the mightiest archangels in heaven. Sent to earth to stop demons from claiming another victim in their sleep, she has battled far too long. Tired of all the killing, she awaits the demon who will overpower her and send her back to heaven.

Yet her life lingers on and a dream she can’t remember plagues her thoughts. Only remnants of her memory remain in the image of a gorgeous demon who circled her before the kill—the scent of Ireland on his breathe, a brogue on his tongue, and the sea in his penetrating eyes.

The demon must have died. She never would have woken if he hadn’t. That’s how it works. How it’s always worked. So why did he appear in her world the next day? And why is he trying to seduce her? Will he be the fated one to finally steal the life of the strongest dark angel the world has ever known? If she’s lucky, that will be all he steals.

ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a revised review. I just found out that this is not a standalone book. There is actually 4 books in this series. This actually changes my initial review. I'm one of those people that an ending to a story can make or break a book for me. I was pretty disappointed in this ending when I thought it was THE ending.

So, now that I know this story is not over and will continue...this is a definite 5 star book for me. Purgatory's Angle was an intriguing story about the battle between Angels, fallen angels, demons and humans. I was engaged throughout the whole book and enjoyed the very detailed description of Jaime's purpose on earth. The author did a great job of putting the reader in the story. It was creative and unique and I can't wait to see where this author will take this story. I should also mention that it is on the darker side but I would rate it on the low end of dark.

Now I still had a couple issues with the book. First of all, I was drawn to this book from the synopsis. When I found out that the book isn't exactly what I thought it was going to be about, I was disappointed. However, it did not take the enjoyment of the story away. I also had a bit of an issue with the romance part, admittedly it's a personal issue and may not bother most readers. I'll reveal these issues in a spoiler below if you really want to know.

--I am the Author of this book--

They say that raising your first children prepares you for the last ones. What you learn from raising these older children is how to do it right. What can I say about Purgatory's Angel? What I can say is that I've written 8 books now and I've published 2 of them. When this one hits the bookshelves, it will be my third published novel.

My first novel, Darkest Frost, was my hardest and most frustrating, my rebellious first child that I tried every formula possible to make it work, but only seemed to get it partly right. My second novel, Crimson Tears, became a work of love where I poured my heart and soul into the project and the results were a true breakthrough for me. This third novel, Purgatory's Angel, is the golden child of my three offspring.

I wrote the first rough draft of this novel in 2012. While driving a long stretch of highway at 2 o'clock in the morning, I contemplated the available novels with a female lead protagonist. It seemed like most women in novels that had a romantic element, had to be saved by a man, usually a rich man.

I have no patience with sappy love stories with withering female characters or endless, pointless description that has no bearing on the story. I want a fast-moving plot with complex characters that keeps my interest from the first page to the last.

What I wanted to read was a novel where the protagonist was the one doing the saving. I wanted someone so strong she could end the male protagonist's life if he didn't tread lightly where she was concerned. But I also wanted someone so flawed you couldn't help but want to know more about her and how she became who she was.

With that in mind, I set out to write this story about Jaime Connor, the cynical dark angel who kills demons in her sleep. She carries a LOT of baggage that drives her on while hoping that some night, the demon will be stronger and send her back to heaven with the rest of her fallen loved ones. This story isn't sweet or cute. It's dark humor with a seductive allure, action with a taste of delicious vengeance. Be prepared to turn the pages as fast as you can read. The action grabs hold of you and doesn't set you free until the very last page.

Very real lucid dream depictions. After reading the first dream I realized the author must be a lucid dreamer, and I couldn't put it down after that. A very good balance of suspense, action, romance and a peek through the veil. The lucid dream aspect drew me in and I wasn't disappointed. This book had many layers of depth for this genre that I didn't expect.

Purgatory's Angel is such a unique story. It's gritty leading female character, Jaime, touched my heart with the complexity of her path in life. She's a dark angel sent to earth to rid it of the demons that kill and torture their victims. She too had been touched by this evil in her youth and swore to exact revenge, but how can she face an enemy each night while keeping her soul free from the darkness? I felt so sad for her each time she was thrust into a new scenerio, not knowing who or what she would face. Her inner strength and determination was admirable even if she seemed to walk a fine line between good and bad. I believe that too made her more captivating.
"My greatest fear is I'll someday become one of them. I fear the idea of giving in to the darkness, becoming a rogue angel."

Collin Leary, a mysterious and super sexy artist who runs his own gallary Crystal Creation, brings a new energy to the story. From the moment Jaime meets him she doesn't know if she should kiss him or kill him. The inner struggle she faced while trying to unravel mysterious Collin was full of steamy tention and heart pounding moments. I can't say more on this subject for fear I will reveal some of the interesting twists in the plot. I can say however that the author totally shocked me.

I highly recommend Purgatory's Angel if you like bad a** leading female characters, suspense, betrayal and a bit of Irish sexiness.

This is not a genre that I read much in, but I heard some good things about this book and decided to branch out some. I’m so glad I did! I’ve read some other reviews that said the beginning was slow...maybe because I’m not used to this genre, but that wasn’t my experience at all. The writing is short sentences, sometimes dropping subjects, which makes the book fast-paced and action packed from the beginning! I was interrupted several times and didn’t want to put the book down!

I understand the next book is coming out sometime this fall...I’ll be following this author on Amazon, so that I’m sure to be notified about it!

I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed my attention and drew me in from the first page. I literally could not put it down. I sympathized with Jaimie and really felt how hard her world was to live in and feared for her every time she went to sleep. I was surprised at some of the plot twists (totally did not see them coming.) Definitely worth the read! I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Purgatory's Angel is the first book in the Dark Angel Series by B. Hughes-Millman
Dark Angels fight demons in their sleep. Piques your interest, sounds original, doesn't it? It did to me when I read the blurb on Library Thing and I was 'awarded' one of the books.
The first few chapters were a bit slow, laying out some of the base of how Jamie fights demons in her dreams. Stick with it, I did and was hooked. The more I read, the more involved I got. It's a well written, complex story with twists and turns … sometimes more questions than answers, but it's all revealed as the chapters go by. It's interesting how waking and sleeping worlds are weaved together. The demons in the dreams are really human's with evil souls. When a Dark Angel kills one in the dream world, they die in the waking world, and if a demon kills someone in the dreams, they die in the real world. Very interesting concept and pretty original.
Jamie is a strong, believable, multilayered main character, with the right amount of snark that sometimes hides her sadness and pain that's just below the surface. All the characters are believable with multiple facets to their personalities. Who is the 'good guys', the 'bad guys' or are they both at one point or the other in the story? Actually liked it that it kept you guessing, revealing more and more as you go along. And there are surprises… but that's as much as I can go, spoilers you know.
There's really only one sex scene in the book or really one chapter. It's not over the top, and fits nicely into the storyline.
Skinny: Slow start leads into a "I don't want to put it down" story with twist turns and surprises. Complex, believable, love them-hate them characters. You take away the thought that no matter how bad things get you fight the good fight because it's the right thing to do.

Received this book for an honest review from the author.

This is my first book by this author and I am impressed with the writing quality. One of the best line in the book goes something like this, when Rick ask "how can God allowed this" and Jamie replies "God doesn't allow this we welcome this into our lives". This is good vs evil, bad vs good or angel vs devil. Twisted souls and the gate keepers, no matter how you look at this the average person will fight some form of evil either in the waking world or while in the sleeping realm. We all have the propensity to be evil but we also have the ability to make choices not to cross that line and this book exam examines that in detail.

Can you picture being a dark a angel being sent from the heavens to fight the evil that have already manifested on earth but a attacks in your sleep? The people from your past can come in many shapes and forms they can be dark angels, they can be rogues, they could be minions of the Lucifer or they can be the killer of today.

The story kept me engrossed from beginning to end. Jaime character was heavily burden by her many past lives. I don't know if a person could deal with everything she had been through and continue to experience. Her shell was starting to show cracks and she did not seem able to stop them. The choices made in her past made without her knowledge and the information not given led to some questionable choices for her future.

This is not a romance nor is it a horror story it's just "a pretty darn good book".

I received this digital copy in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to B.Hughes-Millman, City Owl Press and Netgalley.

DNF at 24%

Sadly this book wasn't meant to be for me.
I loved the blurb, that was really what drew me in. The thought that a strong female archangel was battling demons on earth in her sleep to protect the innocent. I mean how cool does that sound?! The second half of the blurb I thought, ok, romance I can do romance... AS long as it doesn't take over the entire story and make it into all about him.
And sadly this is what I get. All the main character can constantly think about so far up to 24% is him who she has barely seen and I'm just like whoa! What's going on!? At this point he grabs her and kisses her out of nowhere and I'm like really?! Is this how one of the mightiest archangel behaves? Constantly thinking about a man/demon and his eyes, his smell, does he think about her. Jaime Connor doesn't sound mighty at all so far. Her actions so far have been cool to see but again I don't understand if she really is 'mighty' then she seems to get constantly injured all the time!

At 24%, I admit I just lost interest and I have too many books to get through. One thing that I did like however was the writing, the writing was spot on in it's description of settings and atmosphere but sadly it wasn't enough for me to carry on.

Ok, so after reading this book I could not sleep the way I sed too... I am not going to spoil why, cause that is the whole point of this book, which was new, and I loved that idea even though it creeped me out!

The beginning was confusing and kind of annoying, since she was keen of flashbacks, which I hate. I think this character has a concentration disorder lol Since she was talking about one thing and bam! another thing and then came back to the previous topic...

The Green eyed Irish accent.... OMG I loved him, but me defending him made me question my morals for a day or two, and then I was like no you are good, it's just a book lol

"Take your hands off her or I'll end you now."

He was hot, he was sexy and I loved it.
He definitely regretted what he did, and if it was me and it was real life I would hate him as well, however since this is a book, and a fantasy one, we could dream for a romance, right?
It certainly broke her and her trust, but I think everything will be fine, I am looking forward, with the last discovery and all, but to be honest I speculated it, and the events, and I am proud of myself for that!

Overall, it was an interesting book and can't wait for the next book!

This my first book from B. Hughes-Millman, and I’m thrilled that I had the chance to read it. Purgatory's Angel is the first book in B. Hughes-Millman's Dark Angel series. The book has a new concept that I have not come across before. The book was so well written that it was hard to put the book down when I needed to. For me there are not may authors who can do a cliffhanger well, most usually just cut a story off a some juicy point that leaves you screaming for the rest without ever resolving any of the story’s conflict. B. Hughes-Millman spun a story of good vs evil, duty, faith and love. All while including some realistic fight scenes. The cliffhanger was accomplished by resolving what is at first look the main conflict of the story, while revealing two in topic that will have your mouth watering for her next installment.

In short: well written with some kick ass character development, an original story-line and plot that is NOT predictable and an ending that is satisfying yet still leaves you excited for the next book. THIS IS A MUST READ BOOK!!!

I was so devastated when i turned the last page of this book and realized that it was finished. I need to know what happens next. This is one of those books that you can't help but talk about even if the other person isn't even listening. The plot is so intricate, perfect and realistic that I had to tell myself over and over that it's just a story.
When i started reading this book, my heart instantly went out to Jaime, her strength and determination is admirable and her past is heartbreaking. 'Purgatory's Angel' has the perfect balance of good and evil, love and hate, dark and light.
Jaime knows how to handle the evil she chose to fight but she didn't count on the effects it would have on her mentally. She protects the innocent from demons and rogue angels but whose there to protect her? That where the story gets really good.
The amazing detail of the story paints a vivid and realistic image in the reader's mind making this an excellent read. I rate it five stars.

. From start to finish I was hooked. Although, for me, the beginning was a big confusion I managed to get past that. I really really enjoyed this book due to her sarcastic humor and how she struggles to contain her emotions and her input on life. Just everything. This book was so beautifully written, I had no way to tell what was gonna happen next, so I just continued reading, forgetting that sleep is essential. There is so much raw emotion in this book that just I have no words.

"Understand I have no way to stop it. I have to sleep and I’ll always dream. When I dream, there will always be someone there. I have no choice but to kill before they kill me.”

When I turned the last page, it left me speechless to know it was the end. So many questions swarm by head.
"What happened next?"
"Did she just up and abandon Collin?"

Jamie is such an amazing main character, she's strong willed and I really admired her with how she dealt with each battle and how her feelings changed throughout the novel.

A demon-fighting angel who will haunt your dreams (literally), Jamie Connor voluntarily lingers in the mortal world and, night after night, enters the dreams of souls in peril to slay demons. She has the scars, inside and out, to prove it. And with new threats looming on the horizon, she could really use some friends and allies.

Unfortunately, it isn't always easy for a dark angel to distinguish friend from foe, and with two protective new guys in her life, it's imperative that she learns. Is doctor Rick/former angel her protector and savior, or should she trust Tall/Dark/Irish otherworldly Collin, who claims he's a fellow dark angel yet shows up in her dream battle unexpectedly. Both claim to want to help, and both are attractive to the lonely warrior, but you know what they say about keeping friends close and enemies closer...

This dark read was a real treat!

I really enjoyed reading Purgatory’s Angel. I have always been fascinated with Dark and Fallen Angels and couldn’t wait to read this. The story kept me drawn in from the very first page to the very last page and kept me wanting more. I enjoyed the dream sequences the most they drew me right into the story. Taking the journey with Jaime through this story as she tries to remember her dream, struggling with her own self loathing for who she is, her past that fills her with hate and a need for revenge, her desire for a man she is drawn to that could be her enemy and discovering the truth and betrayal of those close to her filled the book with a good balance of suspense, action, and romance. I can’t wait for the next book to see the journey that awaits Jamie.

I was absolutely riveted from page 1. I'm not a believer in Christian mythology, but I've always loved fallen angel fantasies. The build-up was one of the best I've read in awhile, and gave only enough detail to keep you from scratching your head too much. The detail was stellar and the plot was interesting and unique. Jaime, a dark angel, is among the strongest of her kind, but she struggles with the way she feels about what she does. Then, one night she has a strange dreamwalk that makes no sense and she begins to realise that not everything is as she's expected for the decades she's been hunting. She begins wondering who can she trust in this world to keep her safe. I would absolutely read this all over again, and cannot wait to get my hands on book 2!

Purgatory's Angel, by B. Hughes-Millman is an awesome paranormal romance that fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon and J.R. Ward will really enjoy.

I loved Millian's take on angels and demons. She created some unique ideas in a widely explored genre and that was a nice surprise. No simple angels here. Also, don't be expecting anything you see on TV.

The prose is well rounded. That might seem like an odd comment, but what I mean is that the book is written in a style that doesn't leave the reader wondering what was meant. It is very precise and clear.

This is a great new start to a new series for me. It will be interesting to see what the author comes up with next.

A nice read.
I would of perhaps given 5 except for personal preferences. I do not really care for books that go from third person view and back again to first person. Now having got my personal gripe out of the way...
Its a buy book. The story is engrossing and you will like the way it flows in the characters. They are strong and so many things are happening that it is hard to go away from the book at times. The writing is great and the plot line is very interesting.

Purgatory's Angel is a must read! From the first chapter to the final chapter it keeps you wanting more. The battle between good and evil in it's finest. B Hughes-Millman keeps you guessing to the end. Her writing ranks right up there with Lauren Kate. Can't wait for the second book and to see how this story unfolds.

This was a great take on an angel story. Jamie's life seems so exhausting. A having a some what, normal daytime life. Then battling all night with no rest, and the physical damage she suffers. Jamie is such a strong person. I really enjoyed this book.

Jaime Connor, a dark angel, who was sent to Earth by God, fights demons in her sleep in an effort to stop them from killing other innocent dreamers, some of whom, have been found dead in their beds- adding up to some very gruesome bloody crime scenes. The only problem? There are no fingerprints, no forced entry, and no murder weapons. It's a mystery that only someone like Jaime can solve and avenge in her dreams but she's tired of all the killing and anticipates a time when she will meet her death at the hands of a demon who will send her back to Heaven.

However, there is a demon she met in a dream who controls her through his alluring looks and even the scent of him is intoxicatingly seductive. Demons are only seen and conquered in her dreams but this one shows up in her world and it leaves Jaime to wonder if this might be the one to end her life on Earth and send her back to Heaven?

Fighting demons is certainly not a new concept for writers but this author conjures up battles in a characters dream state. It's a twist that is interesting to think about since our dreams, and our nightmares, can bleed over into our waking hours and sometimes their impact can cause a lot of havoc in our lives. For Jaime, there seems to be no boundary between the happenings of day and night-constantly in battle and what happens with eyes open or closed is all too real. As Jaime mentions in regards to what a dark angel is in this story: "Other angels are there for comfort or to fulfill peaceful missions, clean and pure souls. Our role isn’t peaceful and there’s no comfort." Jaime carries a lot of responsibility on her shoulders and is quick to point out:

“If I’m the last one? When they take the last dark angel from this earth, the world will be in the hands of Lucifer and we’ll see the beginning of the end.”

Purgatory's Angel will excite your imagination; it will tempt you with both Heaven and Hell, it will allure you with a fiery romance and you'll feel like your right in the battle with Jaime- the dark angel. The author is a master at her word craft. She pulled me right into all of her exciting and dramatic scenes. I loved it!
