Not a bad book, except I wish that they had discussed whether DBT is beneficial for Bipolar, and I dislike that they said Bipolar 2 is a “lesser” form of bipolar — it’s a separate diagnosis, and is not any easier or harder than Bipolar 1

The Bipolar Disorder Workbook: Powerful Tools and Practical Resources for Bipolar II and Cyclothymia by Peter Forster MD and Gina Gregory LCSW is written to help people with Bipolar Disorder II and Cyclothymia.

Our family has dealt with Bipolar Disorder and PTSD. We were unaware of Bipolar II until we were sent this book for review. This book was very eye-opening.

This book does not condemn medications at all. However, it does offer some ideas to help either supplement the use of medication or to help make it unnecessary.

We suggest The Bipolar Disorder Workbook for anyone who may be suffering from the condition. We also suggest it for family members or others who are concerned with the wellbeing of someone who does have it.

We give The Bipolar Disorder Workbook all five stars. We think you will, too.

This is a very optimistic book, maybe too optimistic for someone who’s actually living with a mood disorder. It reads like it was written by someone who’s studied bipolar disorder extensively… but never actually had to survive it.

I’m genuinely glad it’s helped people, as the author reminds us repeatedly, but reading it felt more like being told to “just try harder” than being understood. There's little acknowledgment of the complexity, no real talk about mixed episodes, hypomania vs mania, rapid cycling.

The author clearly has medical experience and has worked with a lot of patients, but it feels like the one thing he’s missing is the actual experience of bipolar disorder. The advice? Pretty much the basics: go outside and get some sunlight. Eat healthier. Sleep better. Fix your relationships. Challenge your thoughts. Meditate. Journal. Oh right, thanks, I must’ve forgotten all that in the middle of my last depressive spiral or during a hypomanic crash.

The exercises might work for someone dealing with mild ups and downs, but they completely miss the complexity and exhaustion of actual bipolar episodes. There’s little mention of the mixed states, rapid cycling, or how symptoms can manifest differently in different people. It all sounds good on paper, but in real life? Not so much. I give the author credit but it still comes off like someone standing on the shore yelling swimming instructions to someone drowning in the middle of the ocean.

I’m giving it 2 stars because there is some helpful educational info about the disorder itself. But nothing groundbreaking: the strategies, tone, and overly simplified “solutions” just didn’t land for me. If this book helped you, I’m genuinely happy for you. But for me, it felt like a pep talk from someone who’s never had to live through the storm.

A GREAT Practical Resource for People and Their Loved Ones to LIVE BETTER with Bipolar Disorder

I'm certified as a hypnotherapist and coach, so I regularly work with and help people, but treating Bipolar Disorder is outside of my professional purview. However, I wanted to read this workbook to continue to offer my clients the best and most helpful resources out there.

Secondarily, my late father suffered from both Alcoholism and Bipolar Disorder. What a Godsend it would have been to us as his family members to have had such a wonderfully practical resource workbook as is The Bipolar Disorder Workbook. I am delighted to say it is written by healthcare professionals actively treating and working with folks with Bipolar II and Cyclothymia. However, while they marvelous cite a wealth of research in the In REFERENCES and the RESOURCES section (well worth every health care worker to own a copy of this workbook as a great reference book), the whole workbook is written in prose very accessible to non-clinician "average" (I put that in quotations because folks with Bipolar II are not "average" average.) readers.

One of the ways this wonderful workbook and the authors' approach stands out is they seek to help Bipolar IIs with BOTH the Highs and the Lows. Often BP2, it's more obvious that there is a problem during the soul sucking depression. (Please, please, go to the ER and get immediate help in person. Your precious life is precious and you have people to whom you matter more than you know. Really.) That is often more PRESENTING as The Problem. Often the Mania is quite enjoyable to the BP2 but can leave a family financially devastated from the high risk taking done with its affects of debt or crashed stock markets. They help readers to manage and kindah reasonable leverage the mania for bouts of creativity and productivity with boundaries and parameters that don't leave people in financial straits as the seasons start to change.

Here it is the very end of November and start to December. This is often one of the season shift times into a depression cycle. If you or a loved one are in therapy for BP2 or considering it, this workbook offers a practical tool to use in conjunction with therapy and medications, weaving together a number of tools to live life better. And you truly can. There is no magic pill, but you can live a life transformed.

If you're a healthcare worker or center, please do purchase this workbook to use in your Resource Centers and groups therapies as practical aids to healthcare workers and for the folks and families living with BP2.
