Just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D)? Maybe you've had it a while and finding it hard to get/keep under control? The information in this book will likely be VERY helpful to you. This is NOT just a cookbook. There is a wealth of information provided in the first thirty pages before the recipes even begin. Maybe you have a child that has T1D? All the charts, info etc. provided in this book will get you started on how to begin to use food to help control blood sugar levels. No, this book does NOT show you how to give up having to provide your body with insulin shots. If you have T1D then your body produces NO insulin at all so you will always need that but you can live a normal life.
The role of a healthy diet cannot be stressed enough. Carbohydrates, protein, fats, calcium and Vitamin D all play an important role. Not used to consuming a healthy diet? Chapter 2 provides information on how to make the transition. I LOVE the fact that the author talks about the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 when advising on which foods to eat organically if you have to pick. Not to bore you but, the author of this book is an educated woman with a degree in nutrition along with being a registered dietitian AND a certified diabetes educator! (Sadly, many doctors are not educated in nutrition and the importance of good nutrition.)
Want a flavorsome snack? Make the Garlic Kale Chips. If you've never had these, you're missing out! For those of us who purchase stevia in bulk you will need to convert the 1g packets referenced in some of the recipes to a measurement you have on hand remembering that a little stevia goes a LONG way. Each recipe provides serving size, prep time, cook time, carbs etc. Most of the recipes are simple and quick to make. There is a wide variety and for those that want to know there are plenty of vegan recipes. Some recipes use store bought broth so once again, for those of us who like to cook from scratch you will have to experiment with your own seasonings.
WARNING: Portions are VERY small! I cup of cooked rice between 4 people? In this particular meal only 236 calories per serving! Most people, even kids, need more than this. Now I realize that most will add a side but even for a main meal not much to fill up on. (Admittedly, our family finds most recipe's serving sizes to be unrealistic!) Author does make great use of cauli-rice instead of regular rice which is a great and tasty alternative. Want some vinaigrettes without added sweeteners? Try the ones in this book. Yes, you can make your own quite easily.
How many daily calories do you need? Find the chart at the end of the book along with some other resources. The recipe index is first provided dependent on number of carbs. This is the then followed by a regular index in alphabetical order.
There is MUCH to like about this very practical and helpful book. Yes, I have been a little critical but I wanted to view it from all angles and provide a review that was well rounded for all that might be considering purchasing this book. I would especially recommend this book to those just starting on the sometimes, earth shattering, mind blowing, diabetic road. There is hope for you. This book will provide you the basics that you need to know plus share the carbohydrate values of many, many foods. I would suggest starting with the recipes in this book and then branching out to creating your own. Don't throw away all your old recipe books because as you learn to eat healthily you will be able to convert some of those old favorites.
I was provided an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. That has not influenced my review. I have read this book from front to back, found it extremely informative and I will be giving a copy to one of our relatives who has a child with T1D. Thanks, Liz
Very informative book-emphasizes importance of healthy diet while providing easy to make and tasty recipes. Great resource for those recently diagnosed or those who just need to maintain and keep it under control- you will find the charts particularly useful. Author appears extremely educated in the field with extensive experience.
I think this recipe book hits the nail on the head. Ms. Block has put together great suggestions, Simple Recipes, and Reminders that are keeping my blood sugar stable ! Well organized and easy to read and follow. The suggested recipes we have tried so far are yummy! Highly recommend. E
