Speak of the Devil

Rate this book
Marleigh Benning thinks she’s mastered being a home speech therapist in the most remote region of Pennsylvania… and that the steep learning curve is behind her. But in Speak of the Devil further surprises await around the next bend, as her six unpredictable clients throw her for another loop; her relationship with local fireman, Lawyer, heats up to alarm-level arson; and she discovers why her birthparents went underground. The biggest danger Marleigh faces as she traverses the rolling, verdant terrain, going house by house to improve speech and articulation, is her inadvertent entanglement in a clandestine heroin operation.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

In this sequel, our young Californian is still in the wilds of Northern PA, getting into trouble, and helping her kooky patients. However, there's heroin floating around, and she gets involved in a love triangle, or to be more apt, a love polyhedron. Once again, there's a mystery, but it isn't a murder puzzle.

Pretty good, but maybe not for everybody.

This is the second book of the series but I didn't realize it until I started to read it. I guess when I received it I didn't notice. But I decided to read it anyway.

Amazingly this could be a stand alone book and I love that fact. I don't like books that if you don't read them in order that you are totally lost. But Ms Jay did a fantastic job of introduction on the characters and that made me like the book even more.

I learned about the witness protection program. And it was a very good read. Not gory or full of sex but really had a good story.

I love the adventures of this speech pathologist. Her clients are believable. This time she also gets involved with tracking down drug dealer in the rural area. The B and B owners and family are beloved characters also. The story is an easy read but engaging. Love this author. Also included is a little romance. I will definitely read the next installment.

Purchased Kindle version for $3.99. This is a sequel to Speaking in Tongues novel. I loved this sequel even more than the first in the series; that says a lot because I gave the first books 5 stars. Am excited that the third one is due out soon!

I loved book 1 and thought this would be a good sequel, which it was! Some successes in speaking, as well as dealing with newspaper hoarding and too many chickens. Really interesting ending (maybe?) in the search for the parents. Very enjoyable character creations.

Nice sequel, with a promise of more to come.

One thing that's nice about finding a new author at the beginning of a series is noting the growth as a writer. Ms. Jay is beginning to hit her stride with this second book about a speech therapist looking for her roots in rural Pennsylvania. The mystery is cozy, the characters are interesting, and there's a romance for those who enjoy it. Personally, I find the speech therapy most interesting and was sorry that took more of a back seat in this book, although I am sure I'm in the minority in this. I will be interested in reading the next book in this series. I received a copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway, for which many thanks, and which has influenced my opinion not at all.

Another enjoyable read with an eclectic mix of characters. Some are familiar from the first book, but there are also some new ones. Light hearted, for the most part.

Read in two days. Enjoyed the book- but liked Speaking in Tungs better. It was fun to read a book by an SLP, and even more entertaining to read one by an in home therapist.

Part 2 of a series started with 'Speaking in Tungs,' it's great to continue with Marleigh's adventures in the hill country of Pennsylvania. She meets with an eclectic group of patients in need of speech therapy, things keep heating up with the local fire chief, and we meet a cast of new characters that add intrigue, excitement, and a dash of danger to her life. Don't worry, she'll survive and I'm hoping there will be a part 3 in our future!

I enjoyed this book, it was a nice easy read. It was a little slower than the first one and I do think I liked that one better but they are a nice pair of stories.
We finally get to find out more about Marleigh's birth parents & her past, even if not all of the questions are answered. There's some more mystery and struggles throughout the story, of course, and we get to visit with past patients and meet new ones, who play into some of the issues that our main character faces.
Things get wrapped up pretty nicely in the end, maybe not with a giant red bow but close to it and you aren't left with lots of questions.

Unusual

This week I read two books by Karla M. Jay, Speaking in Tungs and Speak of the Devil. I thoroughly enjoyed both. I read a lot and a lot of mysteries, but I can't recall another with a rural travelling speech therapist as a main character. Her patients and friends are also quirky characters with unusual speech problems which she treats with compassion and fondness. There is a mild romance with a "hot fireman" which heats up a bit in the second novel. There is enough danger to make it exciting and the book moves along at a good pace. I would love more from this author!

I won a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you to the author and publisher for the free book.

I like this series! This is the continuation of a story that started in "Speaking in Tungs". I love all the characters and you can get caught up in their lives very easily. Marleigh is a speech therapist and the book is about her escapades with her patients. And some local drama is always mixed in.

Hoping there will be more of these books in the future!

Hurray! this was a fitting sequel to Speaking in Tungs, lots of excitement and very enjoyable. (I am afraid I guessed the twist pretty early on though). I am fond of the characters, and new personalities lived up to those from the previous book. And of course the Speech Therapy was very important and well portrayed. I'm excited for #3 in the summer!

average

Has a good story line and the characters are well developed but it lacks continuity and jumps to one scene to the next without an explanation. Very loosely tied together but the overall story arc was good . Thus I gave this 3 stars for average. My advice read it on a summer beach or when you don’t have anything else to do.

Stars were taken away due to language and sexual content. To be fair, I'm more of a cozy mystery reader; this was not my typical genre.
The various speech impairments and the therapies used to overcome them were interesting

this is the continuing series with the speech therapist who is looking for her birth parents. she found they both died in a car accident while in witness protection but shes looking for family. she is staying in a b&b while working in a rural area. she has 6 very interesting patients. there's a cop who never talks normally and a preacher along with a taxidermist she runs into while out seeing patients. she is unsure about the hot fireman, his x girlfriend is determined to get him back.

she finds out who is behind making the drugs killing people, it was the preacher! they thought it was the taxidermist. the hot fireman woke up about his x girlfriend, cutting ties with her. he told the speech therapist he loved her when she told him she loved him. she is making progress with all her patients.

now she doesnt think her birth parents died, the graves were empty. she has a fbi guy helping her on her hunt.

i cant wait for the next in the series to see what happens! love this series!

here is the rest of the review from the other one im going to delete
this book picks up where the last one left off with the speech therapist going house to house in the rural area . she is continuing to get info on her parents who gave her up for adoption when she was 2 yrs old. they were in witness protection and now dead. she wants to get closer to the hot fireman!

i know i updated this when i finished it, but i cant find it!

this was the one with the minister that was selling drugs that were killing people and the cop that talked very oddly. the fireman was out of town with the x girlfriend who took his phone.

Isn't it nice to get away from the hustle and bustle and all the craziness of everyday life and just kick back and ride along with someone else? Well with this book, and the first book by this author " Speaking in Tungs" that's exactly what you will do. You will be taken on a humorous, entertaining, suspenseful, and enlightening journey as you accompany the main character Marleigh Benning a speech therapist working in a rural setting on her daily rounds. The various characters and situations she encounters will entertain you, and make you laugh out loud or gasp at the suspense. My wife and I love the writing style of Karla M.Jay. I recommend this book and her first book to anyone. Mid teens through older adults there is something for everyone in these books! A most entertaining read and that's a promise! Treat yourself to a nice getaway and join Marleigh on her journey.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Speaking in Tungs. So I was nervous about the sequel because let's face it, sequels can be disappointing. Not this one! Speak of the Devil continues the trials and triumphs of Marleigh as she navigates life in rural Pennsylvania. We get to keep up with our favorite characters from the first book and are introduced to some zingers of new characters. With a dash of dastardly deeds, a touch of romance and tons of witty dialogue, this novel is the perfect escape. Make sure to get your chores finished first before you start it or nothing else will get done. It's hard to put down.

Can't wait for the next installment:)

Let me just say...OH MY GOSH. Karla Jay did it again, folks, and here I was thinking she couldn't top her first book. This sequel was filled with hilarious, unique humor that only Karla can pull off and has just the right amount of mystery and romance to keep you at the end of your seat for the entire read. Having read the first book, my love for the characters only grew! This was an AMAZING read and would definitely recommend it (and it's previous book) to any bookworm out there.

Speak of the Devil is a wonderful book that revisited all the eccentric & loveable characters that we met in Karla Jay’s first book, Speaking in Tungs. It is an enjoyable read from beginning to end, full of humor, a little mystery & even a touch of romance. And just like her first book, the ending gives hope that, if we are lucky, we may get to once again return to Tungston to rejoin these zany characters.

I so enjoyed this story! Marleigh is an endearing heroine, and had me rooting for her to solve the mysteries she was trying to untangle and to find love in her new home in Pennsylvania. The patients she works with as a speech therapist were both quirky and lovable, and added just the right touch of comic relief. Speak of the Devil has both humor and heart, and I look forward to more from Karla Jay.

I gave up lunch breaks for this book? You bet I did! Wowza. Some times sequels are a let down, like the author put all their 'good stuff' into the first book, but that is certainly not the case here. Speak of the Devil was just as great, if not even more so than Speaking in Tungs. I hope this series continues for a very long time.

I enjoyed this second installment even more than the first book! I hope Marleigh doesn't leave her friends (and now mine) at the end of her summer contract! Can't wait to catch up with them all again soon.
