Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a coming-of-age story about how a young, overconfident boy learns to accept his own mortality and, more importantly, his duties as a true soldier of the Republic.” – Jerrold Tarog, director of Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral
History lessons have ingrained in Filipinos the heroism of the boy general Gregorio del Pilar, famed for the Battle in Tirad Pass. But the ideals that spur a revolution are as complex as the motivations of this young man to pursue greatness.
This compendium brings together the process of making the movie from its director, producers and screenwriter, and an interview with Bulacan historian Isagani Giron that looks into the writings of Teodoro Kalaw and Nick Joaquin. It invites thoughtful scrutiny of a flawed young man and a deeper reflection of Philippine history in hopes of a more meaningful understanding of ourselves as a people and as a nation.
BOOK REVIEW "Goyo: The History Behind the Movie", Interview with Isagani Giron and compiled by TBA Studious
"Goyo" is, mainly, the interview with Bulacan historian Isagani Giron about the Movie "Goyo", sequel of "Heneral Luna". This book details the last days of General Gregorio "Goyo" del Pilar, one of General Emilio Aguinaldo's trusted generals.
MY THOUGHTS: This book was so great yet so short! I learned a lot of General del Pilar and his contemporary times while reading this interview as a book. Not only that this book interviews Historian Giron but also has notes from "Goyo" director Jerrold Tarog and the progress of producing, directing the film.
Such a shame that I couldn't get the "Heneral Luna" equivalent of this work because it was unfortunately out of stock. I didn't really plan on rating this book at all because it was short, it was about interviews and non-fiction etc. Just rating this book now, well over 7 months since I read this book.
Another solid primer on the basic life of General del Pilar, it gives enough historical context and commentary to whet the aspiring historian's appetite, especially if he comes by way of the movie. It won't be a treatment a la Nick Joaquin or Ambeth Ocampo but it does enough to point the way to other, more authoritative, sources.
