This is a stunningly creative pop up book. I have to admit that I think it would really benefit from slightly more input into the narrative; each page typically had one word on and could have used some "noise" words or some sort of story to make it more interesting. But, having said that, the pop up horses really are visually spectacular.

Each horse takes up almost the entirety of the page, and stands up from the page significantly which really looks incredible. Equally, in these sorts of pop-up books the pop up portion is usually quite flimsy or difficult to position to look like it's probably supposed to, but with this book each portion is positioned very well and really stands out.

A unique horse-related pop up book which really stands out amongst all the rest.

This book is simply stunning! ‘Ten Horse Farm’ is a beautiful and detailed pop-up book which is roughly A5 in its height and width but it’s quite a fat book (although light in weight) due to all the pop-up mechanisms inside. The book is filled with colourful matt card pages, with every double page featuring stunning pop-up scenery and horses.

As the name suggests this book is about a farm with horses and each page introduces us to different horses (and other animals) doing things like eating or bucking around the farm. Each double page features just one word and a beautiful pop-up of that word, for example the first page has the word ‘Racing’ and the pop-up image is of a brown horse running with a dog by its side.

You really have to see pictures of this book to get a sense of just how amazing these pop-ups really are. I’m already a fan of Sabuda’s work after seeing his book ‘The Christmas Story: An Exquisite Pop-up Retelling’ and this book is just as good. The different ways in which the horses and scenery on each page jumps out at you is unique and so detailed and beautiful for a pop-up book. I’m amazed at how an entire scene just pops out of each page and every image is different. I also like how each page and all the things that pop-up are colourful and in some of the double pages it’s worth turning the book around so you can see a scene from behind as there are other things hidden in the pictures like all the different animals on the last page.

Although children will, I’m sure, enjoy this book adults can too and it’s definitely a book I’d recommend. And although I do recommend it even for younger children, it isn’t a book that can be left alone with them and should rather be looked at together. Although the pop-ups are well glued down, there are intricate mechanisms and more boisterous kids might break these. There are only ten pages of pop-ups but they are all worth looking at and if you’re like me you’ll love this book and be looking at this book again and again!

Their domestication is inherently tied to human history. With their presence in our way of life, everything moved faster and more efficiently. There are still places on this planet where transportation by horse is the quickest method of travel. (On Mackinac Island in the state of Michigan the only way to move from place to place is by walking, bicycling or by horse-drawn carriage.)

Several years ago, a master illustrator, a paper engineer, acquired a parcel of land with an old barn. It was previously home to ten horses that lived on this property in New York's Hudson Valley. Today with the help of a crowd funding campaign it is now the 10 Horse Art Center. Ten Horse Farm (Candlewick Press, April 10, 2018) written and illustrated with breathtaking paper engineering by Robert Sabuda is a remarkable tribute to this farm and the marvelous animals who lived there.

I am utterly in love with these intricate paper horses that literally jump off of the pages of this sweet pop-up book. Each 2-page layout has an action word that is accompanied by a gorgeously crafted pop-up horse along with a host of other farm animals and implements. The words are simple but imagination can run on-and-on within the frames. The final layout is the farm in full where each of the previously noted horses is depicted, adding a fun i-Spy element to the book.

I highly recommend this book. It is the perfect gift for the holidays and every day. This is a great book that stimulates creative thought and offers hours and hours of imaginative play.

Thank you to Candlewick Press for sending me a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

One of our granddaughters is crazy about horses and at age 4 has even begun riding lessons inside a local stable where she attended summer camp. When I first learned Robert Sabuda, known for his outstanding pop-up books (we own several) had a new book about horses, I had to get. It's outstanding.

Just take a look at the 3-D, pop up illustrations and how they come to life and pop off the pages. The quality of the book, the color combinations and the fine detail paid to every single page makes this book a winner and for sure a keeper.

If you have a horse lover in your family, be sure to buy a copy of this one.

One thing I liked about this book was the stunning three-dimensional landscape that springs to life with each turn of the page. I feel as these give the book a good touch and will attract young readers. However, I would never read this book due to my age and interest, but I can see myself reading it to my younger students one day because it is a pleasure to explore each finely crafted scene since the farm is brought to life in a way that is both engaging and immersive through creativity and attention to detail.

10 different horses and what they are doing on the farm: running, jumping, bucking, drinking, grazing, pulling, playing, sharing, resting.

In this spectacular pop-up book, each horse is large and literally jumps off the page. There are other farm animals on many of the pages, so it makes a great "can you find it game. Because of the nature of the book, it may not last long in a public or school library.

Thanks to Candlewick for a copy of this book by Robert Sabuda, a pop-up artist extraordinaire. If you have some child who adores pop-ups, this is a marvelous one showing 10 different horses and what they are doing on the farm: running, jumping, bucking, drinking, grazing, pulling, playing, sharing, resting. For little ones, there are extra things to look for on each page, plus the surprise pop-up.

Robert Sabuda's Ten Horse Farm is a another masterpiece of paper engineering. This time the subject, a neighboring horse farm, lends itself to impressive depictions of horses in lively actions, several of which result in towering wooded groves, majestically bucking broncos, and palatial barnyards. This is a beautiful book from cover to cover.

Another impressive offering from author/artist Robert Sabuda, this one shows 10 different horses busy with various horse activities. The pop-ups are so fascinating and impressive in their intricacy. Young readers in early elementary grades will appreciate this but it needs to be handled with care due to the delicacy of the pop-ups.

The paper cutting and folding genius has done it again. Horse lovers in particular will love the detailed pop-up illustrations. Each beautifully constructed horse leaps right off the page. There aren't many words, mostly just one per page, but it is definitely a treasure for gentle story-times and pop-up book fans of all ages.

WOW!!!

My jaw literally dropped with each page turn. This book is a creative engineering feat! I was fascinated and enraptured.

If you are looking for a stunner of a book to give as a gift - this is the one!

How - just how - Robert Sabuda knew how to fold, tuck, and crease just right to make this magic is a wonder.

The tree page -- I mean really! I swoon!

Cute simple, very much for very young kids 3/4ish, though with supervision because it is a pop-up book.
There were some details that were only noticeable from certain angles, and you did have to turn the book to get the best angle to view each page.
Still I think little kids who like horses would enjoy it.

This is SUPER CUTE!!!!!! And perfect for one-on-one with a curious little one, giving the child and the adult a chance to explore what's going on in each pop-up. However, NOT a great choice for a public library collection. Perfect for the horse fan, but a little too fragile.

Absolutely gorgeous artwork and a simple introduction to the horses at the farm made this book a firm favourite when reading with my child. It’s remarkable just how they made this pop-up book ready for mass production because it is so intricately put together, it’s eye-catching and engaging for young children and exactly the same for adults too.
