More often than not, Clint Mason has his foot firmly wedged in his mouth, which tends to get him in plenty of hot water with the ladies. Although his laid back good ole’ Southern charm does not fly far with the female population of Cedar Tree, the big burly contractor hides his dark side well.
The only one Beth Franklin allows herself to rely on is Beth, and so far that has served her well. Just when her son disappears after dropping his little guy off on her doorstep, her life seems to spiral out of control. For the first time ever, fearing for his safety, the fiercely independent waitress is forced to be on the receiving end of a helping hand.
That’s not easy for her, especially since the shovel-sized hand belongs to a man whose approach has run hot and cold the last year, leaving her feeling off balance. With a steady and commanding force, he exposes her softer side, while doing everything he can to keep her and those close to her safe.
**Due to some content of a sexually explicit nature, this book is recommended for a mature audience only.**
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
I admit to not even taking the time to read the blurb on this book when I requested it from Netgalley. I saw that cover and.....
I had no clue that this was a romance between old folks. I even twisted several of my friends arms into requesting this book with me.
The thing is...the old folk are around 46/47 years old. That's my frigging age. There was a comment made by the male main character (Clint) that said he was too old to get smexy times on the couch. He needed a bed in order to do that. Now I know this main character had recently gotten out of the hospital for a serious injury but that kind of had my scratching my head. Several times during the story comments are made about the age thing. I make comments about my old ass all the time BUT I still in my head am actually young. Now I admit to some of the problems these two characters faced. Pre-menopausal, feet dang hurt after standing on them all day..etc. I will give these characters props for being so real. When they first get to have some sexy times you see that these characters are not movie star glamorous. They have average bodies and the female MC Beth..was self conscience because she had forgotten her landscaping of her lady bits. Life happens.
Another part I did like was the humor. There is an episode with a "bunny" that had me cackling. (Because I've worried about the same thing) and then Beth tells Clint about getting her "chicken coop" removed. (these dang characters are old enough to know that safe sex does not just equal out because the woman has had some parts removed)
Clint the main character completely lost my cover love after the story went on for awhile. He kept calling Beth "his woman" so much that I expected him to start swinging from the trees and bellowing. He is such a sweet talker "Nothing like the beauty of a spring afternoon," I turn in my seat to look at her. "Except perhaps the fully seasoned abundance of a gorgeous twilight. Now most women like getting called gorgeous. But that was just a fancy way of saying. 'You old.'
So overall this was a fail for me. The story was mostly the two main characters getting mad at each other in every other chapter, then making out...then the "mystery" part of the book just bored the tears out of me. I did love the idea of a couple's story being set in their forties, give me a good one at least.
Booksource: Netgalley in exchange for review.
No one of my friends list has reviewed this book yet, I hope they don't kill me if they hate it. The book does have an average rating on Goodreads of 4.90, so it's very possible that I completely read it right wrong. So I'm picking a review that is positive of the book and you can find it not. I did have a five star review linked here, but this book is not one that I want to help promote. I now have a bad taste in my mouth.
Let me tell you a little story about this jerk who sends me pictures of sploosh worthy covers from NetGalley with messages like "come on, go request this one, it'll be funnnnnnnn." Then both she and myself end up approved only to find out the tattooed cowboy on the front was most definitely the sexiest thing about the book. Payback's a bitch sometimes, though, because I ended up liking this more than she who shall remain nameless. Go figure *shrug*
The basic premise of Upper Hand is Clint and Beth have been attracted to each other for some time, but they both apparently suffered some sort of brain injury that made them unable to communicate like humans. Speaking of brain injury - Clint suffers one and Beth becomes glued to his side at the hospital . . . . even though they never really even spoke to each other before and she's a waitress so how in the hell can she afford to not work for a month and then when he gets released she volunteers to move in and help care for him and . . .
Yeah. I kinda feel like you should. I'm assuming since this is #5 in the series some of the ins and outs were lost on me for having not read the previous books. However, I still can't get how the kind of rapey alpha male approach that was a turnoff all of a sudden morphed into needing to be his Florence Nightingale. But whatevs. I'll just go with the flow on that part.
Next a "mystery" got added to the mix for good measure. Although this part of the story drug on (A. LOT.) and featured one too many kidnappings and bad guys getting away and refusal of the average Joes to leave stuff to the professionals, it kept my interest and was most definitely a welcome diversion to all the other stuff in the story . . . .
I'm an admitted failure when it comes to reading many of the sexytimes books. Generally it can be blamed on my dislike of dirty talk and descriptions of the acts themselves. This one wasn't too barf-inducing, but the dude sure did like to eat a lot of . . .
Upper Hand did have something I haven't ever come across in romance novels before . . .
Please note I am not a hater of the granny drawers (or MCs in their 40s). Those are my go-to underpants of choice (and that is my soon-to-be demographic). I can't say I want to hear about those underpants over and over (and over and over) again whilst reading a porno, though. Things got even worse better when Beth went on to talk about her "sagging tits, swollen stomach, neglected pubic hair and pitted thighs" . . . .
If I want to know any more about this topic . . .
I'd go look in a mirror.
And dare I fail to mention the flood in those granny pants or her symptoms of early onset menopause sprinkled throughout the story. When my husband heard I was reading a naughty book (plus baking cookies since it was a snowy vacation day here), he was all "BAZINGA!" Insert sad face when he got home and discovered . . . .
That's probably hot. I just haven't found the book that talks about it yet.
As for the state of MY granny panties after finishing this story????
ORIGINAL "REVIEW":
ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Who knew the old lady version of peer pressure was giving in to reading romance novels??? For my revenge, I shall subject you all to the following . . .
Congratulations Fraya you did it again☺ A great addition to the Cedar Creak series. I loved Clint already always putting his foot in it with the ladies lol Clint and Beth are perfect for each other. SOME SPOILERS from here tho I will keep them limited. ☺ Clint is in a coma where he hears Beth as a constant until he awakes. Beth is almost living by his side but when forced to take a break stays with her son daughter in law and toddler grandson. after 1mth Clint wakes to find Beth there for him and then the trouble begins. His estranged brother is back and he and friends have kept his business going and when discharged from hospital Beth goes home to care for him. Beths son is in debt and goes into hiding after his wives leaves him and little Max. he leaves Max with Beth and vanishes. Clint takes Beth and Max to keep safe when the creditors come after Beth. After Beths attack Max is then taken in by Guss's team to a safe house FBI is involved along with all of Guss's crew. let me tell you theres drama from start to finish and I was gripped throughout. I got my HEA ending after a lot of chuckles, gasps and awww moments throughout I fabulous series and I can't wait for more.
(Alfie was the perfect cover model who I totally saw as Clint)
This is my second Freya Barker book and I loved it! Her writing style is so down to earth and it’s a refreshing change from all the fluffy stories I come across. Her characters are just people, not glamour dolls.
This one is packed full of suspense and really shows the family bond their group of friends has developed with each other. Not a selfish soul in the bunch. Beth’s son, Dylan, gets mixed up with some pretty nasty characters and ends up leaving his son, Max, with Beth to take care of and goes into hiding. The story revolves around finding Dylan and keeping everyone safe because since they can’t find Dylan, the organized crime ring is going after everyone they can to smoke him out…especially his family.
The only thing that bothered me was the heroine, Beth. Overall, I like her but, it seems like her first reaction to just about everything is anger and she goes off half-cocked instead of asking questions or just getting the full story first. It really started to grate on my nerves after a while. Just not my kind of person/character. I loved Clint even though he was pretty good at sticking his foot in his mouth when it came to Beth (even though I thought she was over-reacting most of the time)…he was just lovable with a little alpha added in.
I read this as a standalone even though it’s the 5th in the Cedar Tree series and, while I’m sure I’ll get a little more of Clint and Beth’s back story when I catch up with the previous books, I was never lost in this one. The author does a great job of filling in any gaps that you may normally find lacking because you skipped the first few books. I never got confused or felt like I was missing something so I wouldn’t hesitate to read this one just because you haven’t read the rest of the series first.

I just took a wonderful trip back to Cedar Tree. Freya Barker is a brilliant, creative, and freaking amazing writer. I love her stories. I love her characters. She delivers another great addition to the series. Upper Hand is Beth and Clint's story. I know when I start to read a Freya Barker book, I am going on an adventure. I get to laugh. I get to cry. I get family. But most of all I get love. Beth is one of my favorite ladies of the Cedar Tree family. She is strong and tough. She tells it like it is. Inside she is soft and wants what everyone wants. She is a fun character to read. Clint is an alpha male, who bumbles his way into our hearts. Like some men, his mouth overrode his brain. This just made him more loveable. Finding out his secrets just made him hotter. He is sexy, sweet, and yummy. I adore their chemistry has a couple. They made me laugh, cry, and have hope. I highly recommend Upper Hand to everyone.
Another great story in this series. This one is about 2 stubborn hard headed people that deep down know they're right for each other, but just can't manage to take the 1st step. And then add the foot in mouth syndrome and you think any kind of inkling of a relationship is just doomed.
I’m so in love with these narrators. They do such an amazing job of pulling me into each of the books in this series. No question, I’m a fan!
I’ve been waiting for Clint and Beth’s story. I was already in love with Clint and the total havoc he wreaks when he opens his mouth. I grew up with several Clints so I completely understood what he was trying to say even when he was making a huge mess of it all. Beth was a little harder to connect with. She was hard and a bit shut off and she tended to jump on Clint too much too often. However, I quickly began to fall in love with her as she opened herself up to Clint.
Like the other books in this series, this has a deep twisted plot that kept me listening long past the point I would usually turn it off. I was invested in not only this couple but in that of the other characters involved. This also has some ovary exploding moments between Clint and Max, Beth’s two year old grandson. Sooo good!
As the story opens, Clint is still in the hospital after being attacked at the end of Clean Lines. Before his injury, Clint experienced one too many rejections from the strong willed and independent Beth after months of emotional push- and –pull, and he finally gave up and walked away. He never expects to open his eyes after weeks in a coma to find her sitting at his bedside as he tries to piece together exactly what happened to get him to this point.
Beth requires ironclad control of her life at all times after finding herself on her own at a young age as a single mother with zero support from her family. Attempts at letting others into her life since then haven't gone well, and every time Clint made a little bit of progress toward breaking down the walls she built around her heart, she shut down and lashed out to push him away. News of his injury scared the hell out of her and she has been glued to his bedside since it happened, but she is still unsure how she will handle him when he wakes up. Will he still be the same man that he was before the brain injury? And is she ready to take a chance on a relationship with him- if he even still wants her after she pushed him away?
Beth is not the only one who values control however. After a less than picture perfect family dynamic in his childhood and a major falling out with his brother in his adult years, Clint prides himself on being in control of his emotions - and in the bedroom. After the attack that left him hospitalized, he is feeling weak and vulnerable, an unfamiliar position for him, and he is far from having control of anything in his life. He is left reeling from the news that his estranged brother dropped everything to take over Clint’s business while he was out of commission, not to mention that Beth is the one who tracked him down and brought him to Cedar Tree. Add in the unwelcome news that he will need someone living with him for the immediate future to help care for him until he can get back on his feet – and that Beth volunteers to move in with him to help and to bear witness to his weakness- and Clint feels like he fell down the rabbit hole while he was asleep.
Depending on others is not something that sits well with either Clint or Beth, and they constantly bicker as they each try to find their equilibrium in this new arrangement and grapple for the advantage at any given time. And let’s just say communication is SO not their strong suit! Clint has always suffered from serious foot in mouth disease, and that remains unchanged after his injury. He was raised a Southern gentleman, but OMG he can always find the exact wrong thing to say even when he has the best of intentions! And each time he works his way under her skin, Beth gets lost in her own self righteous indignation as a defense mechanism in order to push him away over and over again. Fortunately he recognizes her actions for exactly what they are, and realizing that life is too short for games, he calls her on it while deciding to make one last ditch attempt to get her to give him a fair shot.
“It has nothing to do with being capable or not, or being strong or not. It has to do with being smart enough to recognize you’re not alone anymore and strong enough to know when to lean on that one person who will not let you fall.”
In the midst of all this, Beth’s son Dylan drops her 4 year old grandson Max off on her doorstep and disappears adding to the craziness and stress. Max is just absolutely stinking adorable and a little scene stealer as he wreaks havoc on Clint’s home (and Beth’s clothing and personal items) as only a small child can do. He provides much needed comic relief to the tension and emotion surrounding him; one particular scene involving a “bunny” had me wiping tears of laughter from my eyes, and since I was on a plane at the time it garnered me a few sideways glances but it was worth it!
The rest of the Cedar Tree family is woven throughout the story as they lend support in any number of ways. Of course Gus and his crew of investigators help root out the cause of Dylan’s problems, supporting Beth as she is sucked deeper into the quagmire of the mess his life became before he dropped off Max. Emma, Arlene, Katie and Naomi help Beth sort through the jumble of conflicting thoughts and emotions that are unleashed both as a result of her son’s mistakes and from Clint’s dominant side, especially behind closed doors, that she is petrified to allow herself to enjoy. Giving up control in any small measure has not worked out well for her in the past but she can’t deny to herself that she wants to trust him enough to let that side of himself make itself known to her more in the future. She doesn’t share too many details with the girls but some of their conversations and assumptions are classic girls’ night out- style moments.
My favorite Cedar Tree resident is newcomer Malachi, or Mal for short. He is Caleb’s brother and he won my heart from the first time I laid eyes on him on the pages of Against Me. Mal is a reformed bad boy with striking good looks due to his Native American heritage, a quiet presence, the silent grace of a predatory jungle cat, honor, and a subtle sense of humor. All these traits combine to make him the strong, silent, and caring type who values family more than ever after almost losing it all not too long ago regardless if they are family by blood or by choice. Beth falls into the second category for him, and when she is having a mini- freak out about her body issues amidst a stressful situation, he said something to her that just endeared him to me even more than ever.
"That padding you’ve got on you? Makes you soft, pliable— the way a woman should feel. I’m thinking Clint’s a lucky man. Figure I find me a woman like you one day— all soft and rounded in the right places, but hiding a core of steel —I’d count myself the luckiest guy alive.”
Being a curvy girl myself who is staring at the start of my 40s this year, Beth and the characters in this series resonate with me more than many others I have read. I can only hope a real life Mal exists somewhere out there in the world, and I cannot wait to see what woman makes him the luckiest guy alive on paper!
As I wrap up this review, I found myself contemplating the title Upper Hand and what it means in the actual sense as well as in the context of this story. After a quick search, a few pertinent definitions popped up: "A dominating or controlling position" from dictionary.com, and "mastery, advantage, control" from Merriam Webster. I think you hit the nail on the head with all aspects of those definitions in this story Freya- I am ready for the next one already!
NOTE: Although Upper Hand can definitely be read as a standalone, based on some of the other comments I have seen posted you may want to read at least book 4 in the series Clean Lines before starting Upper Hand. The circumstances leading to Clint's injury are explained in Upper Hand but it seems folks better understand the details and events of this book if they have read Clean Lines first.
This is book five in the Cedar Tree series and it is hilarious, fast-paced, romantic and very enjoyable. I read this one without having read the earlier books in the series but that didn't spoil my enjoyment and I am now very eager to read the others.
I wavered between 3.5 and 4 stars. I thought it rambled a bit in places but I enjoyed all the characters and I liked the fact that the female lead - Beth - was in her forties, a tough cookie but vulnerable at the same time and I loved the way Clint kept putting his foot in it. I thought the plot of the story was realistic and it is great to have this as an ongoing series.
Beth is quite a tough woman. She raised her son herself and now has a grandson and a job in a diner and life is ok except for Clint.
Clint is one of the locals and both Beth and Clint are deeply attracted to one another but Clint has a way of putting his foot in it big time. Beth has managed to keep him at a distance because Clint ignites both passion and irritation in her and she just wants a quiet life.
But that quiet life comes to an end when Clint is attacked and ends up in hospital and Beth rushes to the rescue only to find that Clint rescues her when her son and daughter in law each disappear leaving her with her small grandson.
And so she moves in with Clint to help him recover and so that Clint can help her find her missing son. Both Clint and Beth also decide to find each other.
This story is great and very funny in places. It is a mystery/thriller and romance but more of a romance and this is great. Not only must Clint and Beth solve the mystery of her disappearing son, they must also 'solve the mystery' of the deep sexual attraction they have for each other.
And of course that is where the fun starts.
This is a really great book. It has everything - great characters, interesting story line, witty and funny dialogue and a lovely ending.
I don't read a lot of m/f but since this one came with a mystery I jumped right in. I enjoyed this because Beth was a pretty strong woman and gave Clint a run for his money and Clint was an ordinary bloke who gets things both wrong and right. I loved their relationship and how they were both honest and open about what was happening between them.
But I am somewhat puzzled by their unprotected sex. Beth just jumps right in, flings off her underwear and gets down to business, no questions asked. The only thing Beth was worried about was that she hadn't trimmed her pubic hairs. By all means get your priorities in the right place why don't you!! So sexual health was obviously not a concern here.
Oh well.
Moving on.
The Mystery was a bit obvious but still good because it involved vicious criminals who have Beth and grandbaby in their sights . I don't think it was supposed to be the focus of the story and was very much the context for Beth and Clint's relationship and allowed them to become close to each other. It was one of the factors that brought them closer together. So it complemented the romance but gave the story a kind of edgy thrill. So that was good.
Best of all was Beth's lovely toddling grandson. The icing on the cake of a lovely story.
So having enjoyed this courtesy of the author via NetGalley (thank you) I will be reading the other four stories in this series and I am looking forward to it.
This is the last book that I have for this series to read. It revolves around Clint and Beth. These characters get to experience everything that the others have gone through and the things that they will have to go through also. All of these characters are there for each other and that makes these books feel more like I am reading about a family, rather than individuals. They interact and overlap and I am so excited to keep reading with each turn of the page (or in my case swipe of the screen). I am so hoping that the author will keep writing about these characters and I am not ashamed to admit that I would like to see Neil get his story at some point. (Hint! Hint!)
A great continuation of the Cedar Tree series. Clint and Beth are an awesome couple, even though he has trouble keeping his foot out of his mouth. I loved the banter between the characters and the reoccurring characters in the series. The suspense plot line is well thought out and paced. Love this series and am anxious to read more from this author. Upon listening to the audio version of the book, I was reminded what a great character Clint was. While the suspense story is engrossing the man made me laugh and smile throughout the book. He and Beth are both strong characters and the banter between them is funny, fast and sexy. They may well be my favorite Cedar Tree couple.
I love all of Freya's books and was very excited to read the latest installment of her Cedar Tree series. Clint has always been a favorite character of mine and it was great to finally read his and Beth's story. Clint is such a lovable guy even when he's acting like a macho idiot. He means well but sometimes his brain is trailing too far behind his mouth and it gets him into trouble, especially with the equally fiery Beth. Fireworks definitely abound in this story! I love the excellent mix of romance, humor, and mystery that is woven through the book. A page turner from beginning to end. Definitely recommend!
Mystery, intrigue, crime, danger, torture, family, friends, miscommunication, fights, charm, love…only a few words to describe what happens in this story of two 46 year olds finding romance in Cedar Tree. This is a book I would consider to be fantasy though written as contemporary romance with edge and a lot of action. The relationship of Clint and Beth is not smooth sailing from the get-go but they do move forward quickly once they decide to move in a romantic direction. Having Beth’s grandson to care for suddenly adds an interesting twist to the story. Add in some criminals and the FBI and the people from Cedar Tree and you end up with a lot happening and at times I wanted to know more while at other times I wanted to know a bit less. Overall it was well written, entertaining and worth reading. I can’t say that I would have fallen for Clint and have never been like Beth BUT it would be nice to have the close-knit community filled with friends that they both seem to have in Cedar Tree and I am happy they found one another.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the copy of this book to read and review.
When I read the first book in this series, I instantly fell in love with the authors writing style. The characters are so relatable, it felt like you were witnessing a family member or neighbours story. This fast became one of my favourite series.
Upper Hand was no different. The author created a story that proves “Age is nothing but a number” You are never too old to meet the love of your life
Clint and Beth are one of my favourite couples from Cedar Tree. Both strong yet stubborn, flawed yet passionate. But both 100% devoted to one another.
Their story is filled with drama, super H O T moments and humour. The supporting characters prove that Cedar Tree is a community that looks after each other. So much that I wish I could move there.
I HIGHLY recommend this book and this is one of the best series I have had the pleasure of reading.
I wish I could give this ten stars but FIVE stars it is.
I fall more in love with this series with each book I read. I love that the author is able to create characters that are so relatable. I love that they are so “real”. The emotions were high in this story. Beth and Clint have been dancing around each other for a year. Clint is determined to clear the air and make her see that she belongs with him. After Clint gets hurt helping Joe and Naomi, Beth realizes that she has been cheating herself by not acting on her attraction to him. I loved the addition of Jeb, Clint’s brother. I also loved the addition of Beth’s grandson, Max. The whole group rallies around Beth when the sh*t hits the fan with her son. Clint and Beth light the pages on fire. The author does such a great job with the descriptions and details that it feels like I was in the story right along with them. I laughed and cried with these two characters. Their story is absolutely beautiful. I am so looking forward to the next book! Reviewed for FMR Book Grind
I was so excited for some more Cedar Tree adventure and Freya did not disappoint with this book. Full of non stop action with a little realization that it is okay to lean on your friends and love ones. I am struggling to write this review as I am very worried about giving to much away, I hate spoiler reviews. These characters grow in strength and understanding all while facing some pretty extreme challenges.
Clint and Beth are nothing but explosive when they cross paths. As we have gotten to see their interactions in the previous books, it has been easy to see that there is some potential interest hiding deep. When Beth learns of Clint's injury she has an instant need to be by his side which also gives her some time to spend with her son and grandson.
After a long time stuck in a hospital bed Clint gets the sent home to rest. When you have had a near death experience you look at some things differently. Surprised when Beth offer to stay with him during his recovery. The more time they spend the walls seem to be falling down. He has to deal with some big surprises when he gets home and digs deep within to find some forgiveness.
Beth's son find himself in trouble and he leaves his son with her. Things get a little scary and Beth struggles to hold everything together for Max and Dylan. This strong courageous woman never backs down and forces her GFI friends to include her in all things. Afraid for her son but also for the feeling she is having for Clint.
Will Beth grab onto life and give Clint a true chance. Will Clint be able to help Beth get through Dylan's problems while showing her it is okay to lean on those who care for you. Leaning is not a sign of weakness.
Now, the big question is which Cedar Tree couple will we get next?
*** Advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest review. ***
Oh how I love Cedar Tree. Each new book takes us back to the gang and we learn a little more about everyone, even while focused on this particular books main characters. I've always enjoyed Beth and her ascerbic tongue and got a laugh from Clint's constantly saying the wrong thing despite best intentions. Seeing their connection was fantastic. Beth gives Clint an acceptance he hasn't had before, and Clint gives Beth a safe place to land. I love Clint pushing Beth's boundaries, in and out of the bedroom. The sex scenes on this one are even hotter!
Once again, our main characters are far from perfect, emotionally or physically, but they are so real. I loved that there is an additional storyline with Beth having a grandchild that she's taking care of. In todays world, a lot of mid 40 year old grandparents are in the same boat and can relate. And I guess that's the word, I can relate to the people in Cedar Tree. In every heroine, I found a piece of myself and in every hero, I found a piece of the man I want as my hero. I can't put Freya's books down when I start them and when I get to the end, I'm disappointed, I just want it to keep going!
I received this book for an honest review
10+ stars! Freya you out did yourself on this one. I couldn't put it down for anything in the world. I am so in love with Clint. I wish I could go and live with them. I love how Freya brought all the characters back from the other books. Can't wait to add it to my book shelf. After reading Cleanliness I started counting down to win this one came out. Thanks Freya for giving me the chance to read it and fall in love with Clont all over again. Your the Best!
Clint Mason has the habit of finding himself in trouble with the ladies when he speaks. He has a dark side that even his Southern attitude will not help.
Beth Franklin has always relied on herself. When her son disappears after dropping off her grandson she is suddenly feeling out of control. Fearing for her son safety, she has to learn to deal with help.
It is not easy when person is Clint who has her on a rollercoaster of hot and cold emotions for the past year. Can these two sorts out their feelings as they spend more time together? Are they meant to be together despite themselves? Knowing and accepting love and not to fight it.
This is the first book I have ever read where the heroine is a grandma. Beth and Clint are both in their late forties and have been dancing around each other for a while. I wish I would've read more books in this series because I did feel a little lost at the beginning and I thought it started out a little slow but once this story got going - there was suspense and drama with some pretty hot sexy scenes. Beth wasn't my favorite heroine but I adored Clint. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and will probably go back and read more books in this series.
You've heard how "things get better with age" - like a good wine or a single malt - well, I think that wee phrase so applies to the Cedar Tree series - in both the books and the characters!!!
Upper Hand is Clint and Beth's story and what a wee corker it is!!!
When we were first introduced to Clint I thought he was just gonna be a nice guy with a hellish case of constant foot in mouth but I was fairly off base with that assumption... Sure, he did have a habit of saying what sprang to mind without considering how it sounded or was likely to be construed but it was usually with good intentions and no malice. He's really a sweetheart (in is own 'foot in gob' fashion) who supports Beth through everything thrown at her - his relationship with her grandson was fab and brought out another side of him. Freya had me laughing often with his comments and thoughts, his character is really quite funny!
and so to Beth. Now here's the thing.... Beth isn't up there as one of my favourite Cedar Tree gals - I wasn't totally enamored with her but she did grow on me as the book progressed and I got to understand why she often acted the way she did at times ... I just felt she was too hard on Clint, she blew a tad too hot and cold at points for me - don't get me wrong yeah, she had a helluva lot going on and had had a hard time in her past but occasionally I found myself thinking "hell woman, the guy cares for you and is doing his best, cut him some slack why don't you" and I hate to admit that I did think Clint should have cut his losses and given up on her when it looked like he'd finally had enough of her pissiness and attitude... but in the end I was glad he hadn't throw the towel in!
As ever with the series, the story was gripping, packed with mystery, action and intrigue and the heat level was once again turned up to full blast - damn, Clint & Beth were hot in the bedroom! One of my favourite things about Freya's books is that the characters aren't all successful, wealthy, smokin' hot, perfect young things - I like that they've got issues, hangups, history and life experience. In Upper Hand we got caught up with the Cedar Tree gang and got to see them in action, doing what they do best - I love how they are there for each other and nothing is ever too much trouble, they are a real family (even though it is one of choice and not blood). We met Jed, Clint's brother and found out why their relationship was as bad as it was - that was something I wasn't entirely expecting, thought I had kinda guessed part of the reason...
All in all, even though our main lady didn't completely win me over, I loved Upper Hand and it was a great addition to the series. I can't wait to read Malachi's book and find out just who his love interest is going to be!!
Adore this series, my review has not changed! This is my second read of this book. I adore the whole series. I have read a few reviews of this book & not all reviews are favourable. I guess it really does come down to personal taste and perspective that determines whether or not someone likes a book. This book is about a couple 46 yr olds who have both had some hard knocks in life and who are both trying to shield their hearts from more hurt. Beth is crusty & grumpy at times & quick to fly off the handle so their relationship develops with some sparks & bumps along the way, but I really liked her ornery butt LOL. She has raised a son and is now a grandmother.
Clint had a failed marriage in the worst possible way. He moved his business to Cedar Tree about a year prior and seems to put his foot in his mouth when speaking to women.
Most of the time I like to get away from reality when I read a book and with the drama & events that take place after Beth's son goes missing, it certainly is a step outside and full of suspenseful moments. Gus' investigative team are right on it, so we see all the other characters from the series. But Beth & Clints' actual relationship sits hard and fast in reality & I found it kind of refreshing to read about butt dimples & t*ts losing their fight with gravity and with all that, Freya creates a beautiful, believable man who appreciates the woman foremost & therefore whatever body shape she brings with her is beautiful, because it's his Beth. Clint is the ultimate alpha-male and he walks atop a fine line that teeters into male chauvinist at times. But with the dual POV, you see into his heart and his struggle to verbalise what he feels, so I let him off with the "little woman" comments because you learn just how fiercely protective he is. I think I'm rambling LOL The short message to this story is that I really liked it, even more so after the second read. Check out the audio too, it's great!
I am happy to see there are more Cedar Tree books bc it seemed like book 4 might have been the last. I have to say this one is my least favorite of the series. I dont know. I fell for Clint and his good 'ol boy, often, misplaced Southern charm but Beth was not a pleasant woman. And the storyline aside from them didnt grip me like the previous books. Oh well, 3.5 stars.
DNF 24% too much going on with no substance. There is so many things going on, and I am just not following. Seems like a whole lot of info is missing to get the full story. feel it could be great, but just didn't get there for me. It is hard to keep up with the point of views. not always clear as to whose head your in.
I've been uber picky recently about my books. This series is awesome. The stories are great. The writing is very good. The books are LONG so there is no rushing through the story. The narration is spot on. I thought I wasn’t a fan of Tanya Eby but she killed it reading these books. Noel Harrison also did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life. Did I have a favorite book in the series… nope, they were all great.
Freya has done it again. Please read this whole series. And grab a bottle of water to cool off. Hot Damn, I knew I loved Clint from day one. Welcome to Clint and Beth's story...and hot Damn it's good. You have a kick ass woman dealing with a stubborn man. In only a Freya way there is a backstory. This is so good..
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, suspense, pain, murder, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first Slim To None (Cedar Tree Series Book 1) Hundred To One (Cedar Tree #2) Against Me (Cedar Tree #3) Clean Lines (Cedar Tree #4)
This is Beth and Clint’s story. Clint is always sticking his foot in his mouth around the ladies of Cedar Tree. Beth is no different. Only problem is Clint wants Beth but can’t get her to give him a chance. Beth is determined to keep Clint at arm’s length. When her son goes missing she needs help. When Clint steps up Beth is not sure she wants his help. With his hot and cold personality can they get alone long enough to find her son? What happens when your protector get hurt can you become the protector? Can you finally let down the walls you have up and learn to love? Can you also teach the one you love to open his heart to not only you but also the people he pushed away in his life?
I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I'm not usually one that reads romance about "older" couples, but I enjoyed this one.
Clint Mason is an older man pretty set in his ways. He, also, seems to have foot in the mouth syndrome that gets him into trouble with the women in his town. Beth Franklin is a very controlling, independent woman that refuses to let anyone help her. When her son disappears, she has no choice but to rely on the one man that drives her insane. Clint will do anything to keep Beth safe, but will he get to let go of the reins and let him in?
It took me a bit to get into the story. Once, I did, it was hard to put down until I finished. The characters are extremely realistic, and the storyline flows smooth, with well placed humor that had me cracking up. Clint was a sexy, albeit older, alpha but I found myself wanting to choke Beth out a time or two, as she went off the deep end too easily. The suspense thrown in is what makes Upper Hand hard to put down, as it had my heart racing. Overall, it's an enjoyable story, and I will certainly read more by this author.
Really enjoyed this book as the characters were just a little older than me & were fun & sassy (sexy too) So many times it seems authors write about folks in their 40's as old & this author didn't. But beyond that I liked the mystery: I liked that the characters aren't perfect, nor do they have to be to find love & friendship: I liked the community of Cedar Tree; I love that you can find love again.... all in all just a fun book that makes you feel good. It is the 5th in the series but you can read it as a stand alone. I plan to go back & catch up on the other books.
