Patience has always been Caleb Whitetail's strength. Quiet and unassuming is what you see with the GFI investigator, but the blood boils hot right under the surface. He kept his distance for years only to see the woman who has held his attention almost lose her life not just once, but twice. He is done standing in the shadows.
Katie Acker, once a tough and athletic security specialist now struggles daily to walk. The closest to family she has are her colleagues at GFI. Especially the man who saved her life and always has her back. So when she unwittingly becomes the focus of a Mexican cartel, it’s no big surprise she finds him right by her side.
With the combustive change in their deepening bond, Katie and Caleb do not see the oncoming danger - until it surrounds them.

Against Me is book three in the Cedar Tree series by Freya Barker. Caleb Whitetail only loves one woman, Katie Acker. However, Caleb never thought he would have a chance until the Mexican Cartel focused on Katie their relationship changed. Caleb caught a case with the FBI in his hometown, and after his mother's murder, he returned to Cedar Tree to protect Kate and grieve. Will that be the end, or will the enemy follow them home? The readers Against Me will continue to follow Caleb and Katie to discover what happens.
Against Me is the first book I have read in the Cedar Tree series, and like all other Freya Barker series, it highlights social issues that affect communities. I love Freya Barker's portrayal of her characters and how they interact throughout this book. Against Me is well-written and researched by Freya Barker. I like Freya Barker's description of the settings of Against Me that complement the book's plot.
The readers of Against Me will learn about the issues that people can have who suffer from brain damage. Also, the readers of Against Me will understand another side of grief for a family when a family member dies.
Honestly, the books get better each time and I loved the first one! Freya Barker has given me an opportunity to read about real women living real lives who still get swept off their feet and find romance and true love. I adore that the heroines have issues, for Katie, it's something that recently happened to her and she's having to adjust her world. I adore that Katie pushes herself but also acknowledges her limitations. And I adore that Caleb loved her when she was fit and able and when she was confined to a chair. I appreciated seeing Caleb support Katie but not smother her or make her an invalid. She didn't lose her brains, her courage or her heart, just the loss of her legs for a while and he respects that. So when reading a book that I can truly relate to, and seeing true love and romance, it swept me away. I was sad when it ended and can't wait for the next book and the next real couple finding love!
This was my first time reading a Freya Barker book and I really enjoyed it. So much so that I am going to go back and read the rest of the series and will keep getting them as she writes the Cedar Tree Series.
This book surrounds 2 of the GFI investigators the series follows. At the beginning Katie is wheelchair bound from an attack. We see that Caleb is right by her side and it takes Katie awhile to realize its out of more than friendship feelings. There are so many twists and turns with both of them that it creates and amazing story line. Couldn’t get enough!
Freya has created a cast of characters that I can't get enough of. While each story is centered around two awesome people she is weaving stories in the backdrop like a seamstress. There is always something else going on behind the scenes that keeps you guessing. This installment was the love story of Caleb and Katie and was 4 yrs in the making. Caleb fell hard and watched Katie from the sidelines. He saw her almost taken from him before he could make his move and decided enough time had been wasted. So through an intense time these two grew closer and Katie quickly realized that this was a man that would lay his life down for her while at the same time he believed with his entire heart that she was just as strong and resilient to bounce back from her accident and stand right by his side.
I loved his no nonsense way of throwing caution to the wind .. not wasting anymore time. While this book was also very much a thrilling suspense I still found so much beauty in their love story. In the true Freya Barker magic seamstress way she laid the foundation for more stories.. wetting my appetite for all of these interesting characters. I want Joe and Naomi now. Then I want Neils own funny but maybe surprising story. hes got some hidden desires and needs a sweet shy girl to bring those protective and bossy desires out. Then the sexy Malachi .. I want his story so much. Beth and Clint?? Like Freya get busy. I'm hooked.
Throughout this series Caleb we have gotten to see a little of his caring and compassionate side. The way he as stepped up and spent so much time with Katie during her recovery was not a surprise to me. It was fun to see his alpha male come out a little when he was pushing Katie to get back into existence and leave the hospital. His take charge work ethics coming out in full force. And when he was forced to face his past head on, I think it was a little easier for him to do know he was helping to keep Katie safe. As much as he wants to look after and keep her safe he knows that she is not willing to sit back and let them take over, so he keeps her involved in the investigation as much as possible. It is not a wonder that Caleb would be my favorite of the series so far.
We had only seen little glimpse of Katie in the previous books. I can't even imagine the devastation of going from the fierce GFI agent to being injured so badly you are confined to a wheelchair. I think Katie's character growth is the most substantial so far. As her past dictated she truly felt she was not worthy of true friendship and love. It takes her some serious soul searching along with a little friendly push to see everyone is worthy. When you find the right people to include in your life they won't care about the past but more about the person you have become. To be able to sort through all this while trying to watch your six and figure out who the hell it trying to kill your ass and why. I am certain that I would have succumbed to the stress, where Katie just kept pushing along.
Watching Caleb and Katie open up to each other and find their way to happiness was superb. Freya, they just keep getting better and better. I am sitting on pins and needles waiting to see what you have in store for us next with the Cedar Tree gang.
*** Advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest review***
I decided to offer a review for this book whilst helping on a blog tour. I didn't realize it was part of a series so I have thrown myself in at the deep end.
I realized early on that there were two people here that had a past, but they still had chemistry between them.
In with the romance bit is thrown in crime and suspense which worked very well together. It definitely kept it away from being slushy.
I admire that the author Freya Barker had characters written in that had mobility issues, what I refreshing angle as so many authors have 'near to perfect' females and rugged alpha male types a lot of the time, stereo type. So this, it made a difference to me.
There are some fun moments written in between the pages, I thought the author had a great sense of humor and it lightened up some dull moments.
I enjoyed this authors writing, it was fresh, kept most of its flow, kept my attention and kept me well entertained whilst I've been unwell in bed with a virus.
I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book at an author signing event and I LOVED it! I've read the other two books in the series and I think I enjoyed this one the most. Caleb had always been a favorite character of mine from previous books and I was happy he and Katie got their own story. And what a story it was!!! I love how Freya is able to portray characters. Her characters are not perfect. She shows them in a real way. Disabilities are not flaws or imperfections but a part of the characters. It might slow them down but it doesn't stop them from leading lives full of love, lust, and friendship. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book!!!
Caleb was a dream! To find a hero that is willing to wait for so long for the woman he believes is his one, just gives me all the feels! I love how protective he was of Katie and how he didn't even bat an eye when she was seriously injured and needed some major rehab. What is there not to love about him?
Katie is a great characters as well. What she goes through after being injured takes a lot of bravery. I was so happy to see her and Caleb finally get together. What kept them a part at first is not my favorite scenario but it is real and ultimately showed how much Caleb had fallen for her. I really love to see that in a hero.
The storyline as usual was awesome! I'm a big fan of this authors writing and how she can pull me into a book so easily. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
I'm so hooked on Freya's writing. She creates such beautiful and relatable characters. They're raw and real and getting to know them is an adventure in itself. Caleb was incredible. Protective, honest and with a no nonsense atitude, yet filled with patience and compassion. He was supportive and he truly cheered on Katie. And Katie was her own kind of awesome. Watching her recovery (both mentally and physically) was inspiring. She was resilient and a survivor.
This book had great elements of suspense but never letting go of romance and the development of Caleb and Katie's relationship. We also got to see some old faces we love and got to know some new faces I'm sure we'll come to love just as fiercely. I'm dying to read the next books.
I liked the book but I think things happened way too fast. I loved how Caleb had loved her for years and waited for her to be ready and how he loved her, swoon. I liked Katie too. What I didn't like it's thst sometimes they acted like they weren't the agr they were, it was just weird
To be honest I wasn’t sure if I would like this book as well as the first two because I never really liked Katie, ya know the whole Gus thing in the first book. I went in to this one knowing I would love Caleb and just hoping Katie was good enough for him in the end. Of course I also wanted all the updates on everyone in Cedar Tree too. So I went in to this one with an open mind about Katie but I have to admit I started feeling stabby about her just reading the prologue. There were several times in this one that I got stabby about that whole situation, right along with Caleb. I guess my thing is in my experience the scenario of everyone being friends never works because someone, usually the Katie in the equation, steps over a line…also not many women would be so accepting like Emma…I know I wouldn’t be. lol! Anyway while I got irritated with that situation a few times because I am not a trusting person if put in a situation of her being around so much even with Caleb, much less being buddies with her like Emma, I still loved this story. I have to admit I never saw that twist with Juan coming at the end, I was glad to hear that he had been okay after worrying about him when he left the facility.
Katie was a little annoying at times but for the most part I went from really disliking her to actually thinking she wasn’t so bad. Caleb I loved before this book, during this book, and after this book.
The only thing that I could have done without was the but it didn’t completely take over the story like so many books that have this scenario in it, so it didn’t really take away from the story for me like it usually does when it happens.
I can’t wait to get Naomi and Joe next that sounds really interesting, Clint and Beth sounds like a great story for me too….oh and Neil and Malachi would be nice in the future too, especially Malachi.
I would like to start by saying this is my first book by Freya and I will be going back and reading the others. Her writing and story blew me away.
I fell in love with Katie and Caleb right from the start. I love how Caleb is with Katie!
Both Katie and Caleb are dealing with some pretty heavy isssues, Caleb having to return home for his work and Katie going through her brutal recovery.
The story was so well written and amazing! I dont want to give too much away. Everyone sheshould experience this read for themselves. Can Katie and Caleb really have everything they wanted together? I was asking that question the whole way!! I was kept on my toes this whole book and there certainly was no point in the book where I wanted to set it down.
I would definitely recommend this to everyone! I love finding new authors and I am looking forward to reading more from Freya!!
Against Me by Freya Barker is the third book in the Cedar Tree series. Each book in the series follows a new set of main characters but I would recommend reading it from the first. Personally, I didn't and I realised that I wasn't able to connect with most of the characters easily. I don't think I connected with any of them enough for me to feel something strong for the story so it was a little upsetting. However, the characters were likeable. I liked their qualities and personalities. It was unfortunate that I didn't feel for them. Aside from the characters, the plot was pretty solid.
The storyline was great. There were highs and lows in the story that just pulls you in. I liked the pacing of the story as well as the relationship between Katie and Caleb. It wasn't too fast. There was build up from start to end. All in all, the story and characters were great but the lack of connection takes it away for me.
This is the 3rd book in the Cedar Tree Series but can easily be stand alone. I was really drawn into this book, in fact, I read it in one sitting. Caleb and Katie are partners at work, Katie is severely injured and you see Caleb who has been standing on the side showing how much he cares for Katie. The way these two interact is awesome! I really loved this book!
The Cedar Tree series which I have just read back to back is outstanding. Freya Barker is just crazy ass talented and I’m totally fucking overexcited with my discovery and wanting the world to know, this means in my usual fashion the profanity when excited goes into overdrive, leaving me swearing like a sailor with tourettes, however as her writing is so flawless and overwhelmingly real – whilst also being hot as fuck (see I told you, profanity and excitement go hand in hand!) – I also want to wax lyrical and eloquent.
So where does that leave me?
A motherfucker of a poem?
Possibly.
Because I want to shout, put it on billboards, skywrite it and advertise far and wide, share with the world albeit in a colourful fashion that Freya Barker has a gift, writes real, heart-warming and emotional, funny, hot books with characters whose banter, friendships and stories will have you rooting for them, getting serious feels for them, purchasing new batteries for toys because oh boy did I mention HOT as FUCK, and all while effortlessly throwing in suspense, intrigue, fabulous funny sarcasm and humour. She dares to go where few authors will risk, writing older characters with health issues, disabilities, the reality and the fantasy seamlessly intertwined and breathtakingly beautiful. I remember when I finished my first Kristen Ashley immediately downloading the rest of the series, devouring them one after the other while the family took care of themselves because I was on a mission, déjà vu for Freya Barker. I have no clue why she is not more well-known or why this series, especially Slim to None, is not a huge bestseller because for me they were a special read, the author an awesome discovery and I had a real ‘oh my fucking god’ moment when I finished the fourth book Clean Lines because, apart from KA, not many have written a series where I literally could not choose my favourite, where every single book boyfriend was ‘The One’ and every single heroine I wanted to be or wanted as a bestie, all abso-fucking-lutely fabulous, the fantasy escape we read romance for but so bloody real. And yeah I’m gushing, I’m also stalking and pimping her crazy talented ass out, much as my blog partner-in-crime has done for some time, because she needs that one tiny little touch of luck to put these books where they belong…
……………………………………
So let’s start with Slim to None, with my gorgeous Gus and sassy Emma whose start is the amazingly steamy “porn” phone call (I say “porn” firmly tongue in cheek by the way, check out the one star “porm” review!!) which personally I thought was hilarious, hot and worked for me!
“Sure thing. We’ve only known each other for what? Three, four days?” Forcing out a chuckle, she finished. “Just fun and games, right?” She could feel his growl behind her. “Fuck no, woman.” He bit out. “You know it, and I know it. We’ll sort it, but now is not the time. You’re exhausted and I have a team to set up. So, when I say ‘sort it’, I mean I’ll have myself up in your face, and under your skin and into your body so deep, you won’t be able to doubt my intentions.”
Oh Lordy I’m having a flush just reading that quote! Gus is all man, alpha male written with a vulnerability, warmth and humour that you will fall into a puddle at his feet, worshipping at the dream that is Gus. Emma is so strong and sassy, refusing to let life get her down, choosing to live and enjoy even with health limitations, without giving spoilers let’s just say the thoughtfulness shown by Gus for making Emma comfortable while still being sexually adventurous was all kinds of hot I wasn’t expecting. The chemistry between these two when it does explode is so well done that it’s seamless, the physical and emotional so well intertwined with sassy humour and banter that you almost miss, through the sheer panty melting hot scenes, the friendship and emotional attachment that is developing between them. This introduction to the Cedar Tree series is totally addictive because while being captivated by Gus and Emma, their intimacy and relationship and the friendships of the secondary cast all merges together to create a world I didn’t want to end.
……………………………………
Hundred to One is the second outing, and features Arlene and Seb. A very different couple yet again Ms Barker managed to engage me with 100% attention, devouring this story.
“There is nothing to miss – there is too much to take in. Do you realize how unique it is to find what we have? With our backgrounds, both of our fucked up histories? We were a hundred to one odds. Who could have imagined that you and I would hit it off, let alone fall in love. I don’t want perfection… you don’t want perfection, we both want real and this is as real as it gets. Wrinkles, blemishes, nose hair and hang-ups… All of it.”
Arlene is just bloody fabulous, I adored her, strong willed, independent and fiercely loyal she was a joy to read, her altercations and interactions had me laughing out loud, Emma and Arlene could be me and my bestie talking! Seb was a bit of a sleeper for me, Gus and Caleb I was an immediate take me now! As Hundred to One progressed I was yeah I’ll take Seb as well. Dibs. They are a perfect match, I didn’t see it at first but as their pasts unfold and their relationship picks up speed then for me it was a real life fairytale. I don’t want to give spoilers but the ring is perfection and I’m fanning my face thinking of cold storage!
……………………………………
Against Me was a knockout. I never cry, my blog partner will be in tears, wailing like a demented woman and I’ll be all “yeah it was emotional” but to get a tear or lump in the throat from me is epic!
“Amazing how one moment you realise it isn’t so much how people treat you that holds the power, but how you interpret and react to the treatment.”
At the end of Caleb and Katie’s journey I was a mess. MOTHERFUCKING CAPS LOCK FULL ON MESS! It has so much emotion packed in and is written so flawlessly that it is not a story, it is a journey, a hard, messy, emotional journey that shreds you while having such beauty it’s outstanding. Yet again Ms Barker gives us a couple different in feel from the previous two, Caleb is a patient man, silently in the shadows waiting for his time with Katie. Katie is dealing with huge physical and emotional issues recovering after an incident so she’s feeling vulnerable and has a loss of confidence. Watching these two come together and the development of the relationship was a joy, Caleb is my favourite type of book boyfriend – throw in the suspense, intrigue, feels, plus a secondary cast who interweave throughout again and you have a recipe that is mouth-watering and delivers. Doesn’t harm that again it’s as hot as fuck with almost a bit of kink thrown in, grab those batteries because OH LA LA that boy, panties not needed! My favourite so far and a reread for many years to come.
……………………………………
The overwhelming factor for me that makes all of these such an enjoyable read is the amazing banter between all the characters, primary and secondary. The affection, humour and love shines through, the teasing, flirting, arguing, dirty sexy talk and insults flung around through these books make them a pleasure to experience. Like every family, whether blood or choice, they will frustrate and exasperate you – you will be rooting for them while screaming at them!
Kindle and the indie writing world gave me Kristen Ashley and Madeline Sheehan, I now add Freya Barker to the “I don’t need the cover or blurb because it’s an automatic one click on the strength of the author alone” list. There is no better compliment I can give to Ms Barker other than Thank You, you have created characters that will remain in my heart and memories for a long time to come, an outstanding series.
So, I feel like I am already in love with this series before Cedar Tree #3. It's time for Caleb and Katie. Please know Freya does an amazing job representing the other Cedar Tree Family...past and present.
This book is all about Katie and Caleb. Katie continues to gain her strength after trying to protect her boss's wife went wrong, her partner who always had her 6 is more than happy to step up and show her he has not only seen her as back up, but that she is his. I couldn't stop reading this. I loved the consistency of this series. Emma, Gus, Seb, and Arlene is in this book. Katie is so strong, so stubborn, but Caleb has stepped up yo "tame" her. This book continues to show how strong Freya's heroines are. Must read. This is totally a HEA.
The third book in the cedar tree series, we meet Caleb and katie. We learned a little bit about them from the first two books. But we really got to watch the relationship grow and the interesting connections that Katie ends up having.
Hundred to One featuring Arlene and Seb was the first book I read in this series and I really enjoyed it so I jumped on the chance to read Caleb and Katie's story. And I loved it even more than Hundred to One!
Katie was horribly injured suffering a traumatic brain injury in Slim to None and has been living in a rehab facility trying to relearn everything from how to speak coherently to how to walk again. For a woman who was vibrant, active, feisty and used to being in the thick of GFI's investigations as Caleb's partner for the past four years, it is devastating to her to be reduced to this dependent state and her current lack of progress is depressing her more. She believes Caleb is constantly at her side due to obligation rather than because he wants to be- or at least that is what she convinces herself to believe. She has never had a real family to speak of; she was adopted by a family that generally didn't seem to want her around and is unused to the idea that anyone would actually care about her. Yet she can't deny to herself that she has wished for a little something more from him in the past.
Caleb has been treading water hiding his feelings for her for years, but he is officially done with the holding pattern. When a case that he is assigned brings him back to the reservation and his family and away from her temporarily, he never expected that the case would also tie back to events happening at Katie's rehab facility practically as soon as he left there. Racing back to her, he decides life is too short and it's time to grab the bull by the horns. After getting her out of the facility, he brings Katie back to his home and lays his feelings out for her. And oh my, these two certainly heat up the pages when they finally get on the same page themselves! Caleb lets his inner alpha male come out to play and I was loving every second of it. Katie finds her reason to move forward in him and in the change of scenery bringing her closer to familiar faces, and both her physical and mental recoveries are kick started as a result.
Katie is a spitfire in a small package and I really enjoyed her character! She and Caleb are in tune with each other personally and professionally, able to finish each other's sentences and communicate with just a look at times. Don't ever underestimate her for being a "little lady" because, wheelchair bound or not, she will set you straight in no uncertain terms, likely leaving a bruise on your ribs from the elbow or fist that came before it- and if you are a bad guy, expect no mercy as several of them found out with extremely unpleasant results for their manhood! I couldn't help laughing out loud more than a few times throughout this story.
As the investigation into and fight against a Mexican drug cartel continues parallel to Katie and Caleb's relationship developments, one theme is constant throughout: family. Blood may signify biological family, but your true family is made up of those you care for and can't live without regardless of blood or marriage- even if it includes a gigantic stray dog that adopts and protects Katie who she names Blue much to everyone's amusement.
Caleb's brother Malachi, or Mal for short, becomes an integral part of the story and the group before all is said and done, and I think I may have fallen harder for him than I did for Caleb! Give me a damaged, brooding bad boy and I am definitely interested- throw in stunning Native American looks, a sense of humor, honor, and a hint of vulnerability, and I am a goner! Freya Barker, I know his story is not going to be next in line and he likely isn't ready to find his HEA yet, but I volunteer as tribute to help him out in the meantime!! Please say his story is at least on the horizon because I have a feeling he may just turn out to be my favorite guy in the series yet.
If you love a story with action, suspense, a bit of mystery, a healthy dose of steam, a bit of emotional pulling of the heartstrings, a lot of love, and good friendships between folks who are in their 30s and act like the adults they are, then check out the Cedar Tree series and Against Me right away! These books are so worth the 1-click!
The Cedar Tree series is fast becoming one of my all time faves....Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first two books I've been looking forward to reading Caleb & Katie's story, and once again, Freya didn't disappoint with Against Me!!!
We had met both Katie and Caleb earlier in the series but didn't know a huge amount about either of them. As this story starts Katie is recovering from an accident and Caleb is there as the concerned 'friend & co-worker' though that's far from what he wants from the woman.
Neither have had a great life and both have some issues and problems that still need to be sorted out. Katie in particular has an uphill battle on her hands, both physically and mentally, but if she can see herself from Caleb's POV she'll do just fine. There's loads of action, mystery and suspense. We catch up with the couples & characters from previous books and meet again the leads from the next book.
For me, part of the beauty of these books lies in the people. Rather than wealthy, drop-dead gorgeous, perfectly formed 20-somethings that we often come across in romance stories, the characters Freya writes about feel real and are an age that those of us heading towards our 40s & 50s can relate to. Flawed, a little damaged and broken, they are far from perfect but they are perfect together. I love the honesty, openness and acceptance that they show and don't get me started on the sex scenes - talk about HOT - Caleb is one dirty, knicker-melting, sexy bugger (lucky Katie!!) who doesn't hold back from showing K exactly what she does to him regardless of her disability.
Caleb & Katie, Seb & Arlene and Gus & Emma remind us that 'family' doesn't always mean those we have blood ties to and sometimes those closest and most important to us, the ones who care and will move mountains to help us, are quite often the 'family' we build around ourselves as we grow and time passes.
I can't wait to see what Freya has in store for us with Naomi & Joe in the next instalment of this fantastic series!!!
Against Me is a definite read for those who have picked up Slim To None and Hundred to One. If you haven't tried the series yet, go grab a copy and lose yourself in the lives of the residents of Cedar Tree..
Freya Barker is a completely new author to me and I have to say that the main reason I picked up Against Me was because I am meeting her at a signing in a little bit over two short weeks. Well, I have to say that I thank my lucky stars :) The book started a little bit slow for me but once I pushed over the first 30-40 pages, I found myself engrossed into the story and the characters. I loved the smart entanglement between suspense and romance, between danger and love :)
Caleb and Katie are quite interesting characters. Being in their late thirties and early forties, they are a little bit older that the characters I usually read about. But that definitely didn't stop me from connecting with them and their problems. Freya Barker managed to express Katie and Caleb's feelings in a way that made me feel like I can see their story through my own eyes.
Through the book I admired Katie's strength and determination. It was amazing to read how she slowly becomes herself again and finds the one thing that could heal her wound - love.Considering her past and trials, I can only imagine how difficult it was for her to open her heart, even if it was for her best friend. But his persistence and support, his love and protectiveness, Caleb definitely managed to prove that he deserves her trust and is worth the risk. And let's be honest. That delicious alpha ex-ranger is definitely worth the risk :D
The suspenseful part of the story definitely kept me on my toes pretty much all of the time. There were some twists and turns that I didn't expect, and that's not something I experience often ;) I loved the danger and the fast paced action. And that combined with the love story between Caleb and Katie developing in the middle of everything, just made the book that much more exciting :)
In a few words, I definitely found the story intriguing and captivating. I quite enjoyed myself reading it and I will be definitely checking this author's other works :) I can't wait to find our more about her characters :) And I definitely can't wait to meet her ;) Lucky me :D

Against Me by Freya Barker is book 3 in the Cedar Tree series. This book focuses on Caleb and Katie who you meet off and on in the first two books in the series. Katie works for GFI as a private investigator with Gus until he brings in Caleb. Once Caleb sees Katie hes instantly attracted they develop a professional relationship over the years. Katie ends up hospitalized after she suffers severe head trauma trying to protect Emma (Gus' wife) in book one. Upon waking up Katie see's Calebs face first even though they have been nothing but friends in the past. While in a facility to help her recover Katie decides to do some digging for her biological parents and talk about it with her new friend juan duarte who is more then he appears to be and ends up disappearing. While stuck in the middle of a case between the cartel and his brothers gang can Caleb still protect katie when she is run off the road and shot at. What does Juans disappearance have to do with Katie and why is she being targeting when she has no connection to the cartel or the gang....or does she. After Calebs brother Malichi disappears after being blamed for the missing drug shipment with cartel that resulted in the death of the youngest brother of the Duarte brothers. Alot of secrets have been kept and will get brought out during thus story. While katie continues to find out what she can about her biological parents some interesting facts get brought to light about who her biological parents are and how her biological family is involved with in the case. During all the trials and stress Katie faces can she start a family of her own with Caleb. How will her and Caleb move on now that they know the truth about who Katies biological family is and how it affects their relationship. Will Malachi hang around and work past his differences with Caleb and turn his life around. Can Caleb and Katie work past their mental, physical and emotional problems and be happy with each other?..
This is the first time I have read a book in this series and by this author. I have seen these books before and thought they looked interesting. So I was happy when I got the chance to review this book. Though since I haven't read any of the other two books in this series I'm not familiar with the character's.
This story starts out with Katie recovering from an accident. Throughout the book Katie struggles with her disability, both mentally and physically. There were a few times I thought she was a little bit whiney, but I guess that can be expected with everything that she dealing with. I thought she was strong for everything that she was going through.
I loved Caleb he was sweet and caring, and definitely an alpha male. He was also compassionate. You could tell how much he really cared about Katie. Oh and can't forget about his smexiness!!!
Both of these characters haven't had a past and you see they both still struggled with their past. But it was nice to get to know both characters.
This book had a little bit of everything in it: action, mystery and suspense. Some of the other couples from the other books are in it. All of these character's in the books seem to have a great connection with each other and prove that you don't have to be blood related to be family.
I really enjoyed reading this book even though it was the first one for me to read and I'll have to go back and read the first two. I can't wait to read Naomi and Joe in the next book!!!!
4 Out of 5 Stars for Against Me and I would recommend it.
***I received an ARC of this book from the author for my honest review***
This is book 3 in the Cedar Tree series and I think it may well be my favorite. All of the characters from the previous two books make their appearances and their lives are interconnected professionally and personally. Caleb has always appeared to be the strong silent type, however, his emotions run deep. Although he thought the woman he was attracted to was involved with a friend, he buried his feelings and worked beside Katie without letting his emotions show. However, when she was injured in the line of duty, he became her fiercest protector. While she thought he was merely a friend, the man's passion smoldered until she is put into danger and he can no longer fight the urge to make her his.
Still doing rehab from her injury, Katie assumes Caleb is just playing protector and that he feels sorry for her because of her condition. She soon finds out everything she thinks is wrong: from the case that the team is working on, to her self image, to the passion Caleb feels for her. What I love about this series is that the characters are not perfect, they do not have perfect pasts and they make mistakes. Being a bit older than the couples in most books, they don't play the games that many couples do but miscommunication is still a universal problem. I love the community of Cedar Tree and the familial bond that all the characters have, even though they don't share a bloodline. I often tell people my closest family aren't related by blood, but by the heart. So it goes in Cedar Tree. Read the series and see for yourself, but beware of bunnies.
A favourite of the series for me. My review has not changed. This is the 3rd book in the Cedar Tree series, I've just listened to the audio, which I thought was great, the narrators did an excellent job. I adored Caleb's character, he is a beautiful, spiritual soul who started out contracting for Gus' investigative team, in the prologue we see that he worked with Katie on some jobs, which was a real challenge because he normally worked alone. Katie also contracted to Gus' team, she can certainly look after herself and Caleb just wants to keep her safe, so they are at loggerheads to begin with. Caleb also has to endure seeing Katie and Gus interact together and soon works out there may be some history between them. Then we jump to Chapter 1. Whilst on a job, looking after Emma, Katie goes through a life changing event and its from this we see a remarkable change in Katie and Caleb is there with her all the way. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to warm to Katie, I had my hackles up from book 1. (Yes, you need to read it!) But in the end, Caleb and Katie are my two down right favs out of this Cedar Tree group of friends. Throw in suspense, a brother and a pet and you get down right gooey! Loved it.
Cedar Tree is a small town not known to be dangerous and spouting criminal activities until recently. Do not tell that to Emma Young, Arlene Bowers and now Katie Archer the latest victim.
Caleb Whitetail is a GFI investigator who is known for his patience. Usually in the shadows until the woman he admires at a distance almost loses her life twice. He is ready to take things in his own hands as he wants revenge.
Katie Archer is barely struggling to walk, a former athletic security specialist at GFI. She has no family other than her GFI associates as she longs for a real family with the man who saves her and who always been there for her. When the Mexican cartel becomes interest in her, Caleb is at her side once again to protect her. No longer denying their chemistry for each other as they spend their nights together as a string of burning houses and dead people are thrown into the mix.
Surrounded by danger, will these two find the truth behind all these incidents before they become victims themselves? Will they get a chance of happiness before it is too late as we root for them in this third book in the series.
Cedar Tree is an amazing series. I fell in love from book 1 and they just keep getting better! Calebs strength mixed with Katies stubbornness is a force to reckoned! We didn't see too much of Katie in earlier books and for that I'm glad. You really get an in depth look into her in this book. Her passion, her strength, and her vulnerabilities. Being injured so horribly really took its toll on her but she didn't let it beat her and that is where her true strength lies. Caleb is the sweetest of alpha males I've ever read and I was smitten from the minute the book started. His take charge attitude and overall bossiness really pull you in. He takes care of Katie in such a way that you wish you were her. The two of them together is so..... sensual! He shows an obsession with her body that will leave you HOTTT! I couldn't believe their chemistry! Wow.... just wow! I loved this book, I was extremely sad when it ended. And boy do I mean sad, I actually sulked for a while. Freya has an amazing way with words and she really shows you her passion for writing in this book! 5 amazing stars from NADBB!
Another great book by one Freya Barker. I really love this series. This book made me laugh and made me cry. Kate and Caleb I couldn't get enough of. Once you start reading it you will be wanting more. There was a part in this book that I did not see coming. Thanks Freya. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. I hope there will be another one after book 4.
Freya has us back in Cedar Tree with this book and what another fantastic book! If you loved Gus and Seb, Caleb will definitely join those two at the top!
We have met Caleb and Katie briefly in the previous books in this series.
After book one where Katie suffered a major head trauma, she is at a residential rehab facility. She is slowly learning to walk again. When her neighbor goes missing and a member of staff is found murdered her life is suddenly in danger. Caleb has been visiting her regularly as a concerned friend and co-worker. Caleb hasn’t made any moves towards Katie but we have seen in previous books that he wants to but the timing isn’t right. Now he has decided that the time is right and he is going after what he wants full speed ahead. Caleb portrays this hard shell exterior but he is really a big soft cuddly teddy bear.
This book is full of suspense, drama, twists, turns and some hot steamy action on the kitchen counters! Once you start it you don’t want to put it down. I know I didn’t from the minute I started it until I had read the last word.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, suspense, kidnapping, murder, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first Slim To None (Cedar Tree Series Book 1) Hundred To One (Cedar Tree #2)
This is Katie and Caleb’s story. Katie is broken in mind and spirit. Katie was injured when she was protecting Emma and she is still recovering. Will she ever walk again? Caleb has wanted Katie ever since he met her. Can he convince her to give him a chance? Will the danger that is after Caleb affect Katie? Can they work together to solve who is after Caleb and his brother? Will they be able to convince Katie she can still do her job? Will she believe that she is a valuable team member? Can she be with Caleb and still be able to do her job correctly? Or will the danger that is coming for them take away her confidence for good?
I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
Welcome back to Cedar Tree. The gang is back for another adverture and to experience the romance of Caleb and Katie. Freya Barker delivers a breath taking story of love through humor and a little bit of danger. I adore this series and I am not disappointed with Against Me. The best so far. It is amazing. The characters capture your heart. One of the best reads of 2015. Caleb and Katie are loyal, strong, and so real. You feel every emotion they experience. Caleb is an alpha male, who isn't afraid of showing his thoughts and feelings. Just melts you. Katie is recovering and dealing with her issues. I love that she fights through those insecurities. She takes the leap towards a future full of love and family even if it scares her. Freya Barker has created a feeling of home and family in the Cedar Tree series. Her characters are real and believable. Their strengths shows a hope for happiness. Family is not just blood, but those people we pick to be our family.
