Arlene Bowers is as tough as nails. She has survived a less than perfect marriage, managing to move past it to run her own diner. Her abrasive exterior has always been a way for her to hide behind the darkness and pain that she has endured, but a recent, violent attack and several disturbing phone calls have that tight hold on her emotions wavering.
Seb Griffin showed up in Cedar Tree eight months ago and was hired on at Arlene's Diner as a cook. An ex-con with secrets of his own, Seb walks a fine line. Since he began working at the diner, he's developed feelings for his fierce, stubborn boss, and the need to keep his distance from her, to protect her, is a daily struggle.
When it appears that Arlene's past has come back, rearing its ugly head while her defenses are low, Seb steps up and claims responsibility for Arlene, praying that he can keep her safe from whatever is coming her way.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
Freya barker has again left me with joy and warmth in my heart. In a world sometimes filled with pain and sadness I adore finding feel good yet riveting romances. With deeply layered yet surprisingly real characters , this series has stolen my heart. Seb was so amazing with a colorful soul to match his tatted body.
The perfect fit to the feisty Arlene , he brought her from strong yet reserved in the love department to a passionate force to be reckoned with. Suspense that had me shivering with goosebumps to passion that kept me warm even after the Kindle was closed this love story simply checked every romance loving box. So many wonderful characters that had me screaming... ooooh Freya write their story too!! I simply just have one word.. MORE!
I'm glad to get Arlene's full story. She was a side character in the first book of the series and you could tell she had been through something difficult. And now that I know, difficult is too nice of a word for what she has been through. Talk about a tough woman. To go through all that she did and continues to face, would crack most people. Arlene is a very guarded person but she has valid reasons for it. If anyone deserves a HEA, it's her.
Seb was a bit of a surprise for me. He was very protective of Arlene no matter how much she fought him on it. He is also another character you get introduced too in the first book and I knew there was more to his story as well. I was sad to hear about the things he has been though but it also made his pairing with Arlene even better. They fit.
So far, I'm really enjoying this series and all the characters. I also listened to the audiobook version and highly recommend it. The narrators did a really great job with these characters. Great book!
I must admit I really enjoyed this story. I loved this just as much as I did of book one. Freya did a fantastic job with this story. She knows how to grab your attention from the start and keep you captivated until the end.
I just loved the main characters Seb and Arlene. Both bought so much realism to the story. The sexual tension was hot and the had some really steamy scenes. Along with the secondary characters Freya has portrayed her characters as real in that they have flaws and aren't perfect. I sat and had a lovely few hours reading this book. Looking forward to reading book three.
I have not read book 1 in the series but I first heard about it during our recent Best of 2014 Awards as it was nominated in a few of the categories. When I saw the blurb for this book, I thought it sounded great and jumped on the chance to read it. Although there were events in the first book that carried over to Hundred to One and Seb and Arlene were introduced in Slim to None, I didn’t feel as though I needed to read book 1 in order to enjoy Seb and Arlene’s story.
Both Seb and Arlene fit firmly into the adult category as they are both in their 40s, so that was a nice change in a way from a lot of the New Adult books that I have been reading in the past few months. They both have pasts filled with secrets and pain that they carry around as silent burdens, not sharing with their friends and support system. Arlene is one tough cookie to crumble- she has been through a recent terrifying ordeal that is still affecting her, and she has survived an abusive ex-husband who is currently doing time for the damage he inflicted on her. She doesn’t easily let people through the mile-high walls she has put up around her heart, but the ones she does let in are there to stay. Seb is not a man of many words and by all appearances he is exactly what she should run away from with his colorful tats and bad boy looks. But yet he shows her a gentle and protective side that has her slowly letting him in little by little. I absolutely love the cover model for this book because that is EXACTLY how I picture Seb.
It took me a little while to warm up to Arlene but by the end of the story I was really liking her- she is still a tough nut to crack but she doesn’t take crap from anyone and she is finding a way to move past all the nasty stuff that has happened to her. Seb was great as well- a bit bossy, a lot hot in both looks and actions, a bit of a dirty talker, and a whole lot of loving and protective all rolled into one yummy package. They endure plenty of challenges as the past just won’t seem to go away, and there is both suspense and action to go along with the steam. Overall I thought this was an enjoyable read and will go back to read book 1 to find out more about Emma and Gus who were a big part of this story as well.
I don't even know where to begin with this book. First, the cover is HOT! I love me some tattoos.
Seb-This man has stolen my heart. A GR friend said this is one of her favorite male characters and I see why. He was honestly a great man. His love and caring for Arlene was phenomenal. I could not even tell you what he looks like physically, other than he is covered in tattoos, Yum...I can't remember if Ms Barker gave a description of him, his hair color, his eyes. BUT, I can tell you he is beautiful. His heart and soul outshine any physical attributes. HE IS HOT!!! And did I mention the full body tattoos? He was not a man of many words but he spoke volumes. I could feel his love for Arlene and his sister, his desire to make a better life for both of them. I think he is my all-time favorite Hero.
Arlene-Let me say, I did not really care for Arlene to begin with. I wasn’t sure about her in the first book either. I don't particularly like my heroines to be so brass and off putting. I know why she was that way. Hell, I don't think I could have sustained the abuse she did and still function. I thought she pushed too hard to keep Seb away and was too independent, if there is such a thing. But she grew on me. I admire her strength and courage to keep going and to make it on her own. Then she starts to make me like her. She starts to accept Seb and do things for him to show her love. Oh, she’s still brass and off putting, still too independent. But, the love she has for Seb and now for Faith…it makes me love her.
I have said before, in another review, that contemporary romance is not my favorite genre. It’s too real. Yet, Ms Barker takes the real and puts it into a romance that I can love.
Normally, I have trouble with first person POV books. I can’t relate for some reason, can’t picture it. That’s just me. But again, Ms Barker makes it so I can understand and relate. I can feel what the MC’s are feeling AND I LOVE IT!
After reading Slim To None a few months ago I couldn't wait for Hundred To One's release. It's not often you find a book with real characters with real issues but Freya Barker knows how to pull it off perfectly. Her character's are older, have health issues, aren't in the perfect shape, and are probably the realest characters I've come across.
Don't get me wrong... Nothing gets me going like a 20-something sex god, but sometimes it's nice to have a break from the norm, ya know?! And Arlene and Seb, and of course Emma and Gus from Slim To None, are far from perfect that you can't help but love them.
Arlene is the kind of heroine that I usually have trouble connecting with but her vulnerability when it comes to Seb had me loving her. She's tough as nails, but manages to not take it too far. She knows when she needs someone to lean on and Seb is just the guy for the job.
Seb has loved Arlene from afar since he arrived in Cedar Tree and while he fought it for a while, he's finally decided it's time to stake his claim. And with so much going on in Arlene's life, right now is the perfect time for him to be her rock.
There's a great amount of suspense that had me on the edge of my seat throughout most of the book but front and center was the romance between Seb and Arlene... And of course the smoking hot sexy times between the two.
Overall I really enjoyed Hundred To One and can't wait to see what Freya Barker delivers next!
*ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
I was given an ARC and am so thankful!! After Book 1-Slim to None in the Cedar Tree Series didn't think Freya's next could top it but was I wrong.
Seb is what I picture when I think of real man who is perfect but has flaws. He is tatted, built, reserved and quiet. But if you hit the right button he comes to life and does he ever.
Arlene is a very strong woman who has had a rough go of it over the last couple of years but it doesn't hold her down. Independent to a fault she needs no one until Seb comes into her life.
I love this series because the characters are real people. They have faults, health issues and do not have perfect bodies or careers. The storylines are fantastic and believable and the sex is super hot cause it flows with the story and not exaggerated. They are just like us so when you read the stories you feel as if they are your family or friends.
Hundred to One drew me in from the beginning. I didn't want to put it down. Freya's writing style is so relaxed and calming that I finished this in one day staying up til 2:30am. That was because I needed to know the ending. Even the supporting characters draw you in.
Cedar Tree Series is a definite read. I would highly recommend it if you would like something new, fresh, definitely steamy and storylines that capture your attention and breath.
“I can’t believe my parts are still working after all these years. I thought for sure I had dry rot.”
“I know I’ve been had, but I have to admit, it makes me feel better. Still, I’d rather swallow my own tongue than admit that any time soon.”
“I have to admit, the little nickname Spot is making me a little tingly. I guess it should make me feel like a dog, but it only makes me feel special.”
“You are a rock, and you might slide or threaten to be washed away, but wherever you’d end up, you would still be a rock. And I’m hold on so you’ll get far, and I won’t allow you to fall apart.”
“Do you realize how unique it is to find what we have? With our backgrounds, both of our @# up histories? We were a hundred to one odds. Who could have imagined that you and I would hit it off, let alone fall in love. I won’t want perfection… you don’t want perfection, we both want real and this as real as it gets. Wrinkles, blemishes, nose hair and hang-ups… All of it.”
“Help? You asked for help? Pigs must be flying.”
My Review:
Still blissing with this over forty character series and Freya Barker’s style – she has wicked good skillz. Lots of feels in all directions with this volume. Ms. Barker has definitely mastered the art of writing sensual scenes as she had me gasping and clutching wildly about for libation, as I could not take my eyes off my beloved kindle even to spare a quick glance up for the location of my glass. The humor, dialogue and bickering had me barking and snorting – I love ladies that can call each other a “cantankerous cow” or lovingly argue and state “Kiss my ass,” only to receive a reply such as “Clean it up and I’ll consider it.” Arlene’s story is considerably more angsty and intense than the first book, although just as well written and even more intriguing and steamy – yeah baby. I have a new BBF and his name is Seb. Swoon. More!
I had the pleasure of reading Hundred to One by Freya Barker this weekend. I couldn’t put it down. This book picks up with the same wonderful characters we got to know in Slim to None but gets more in depth with two people, Arlene and Seb. I hoped when I finished Slim to None that those two would find each other and in Hundred to One, it happens. Arlene has been through so much and Seb is right there waiting for her.
One of my favorite aspects of Ms. Barker’s books are the heroes are strong, real men; but the heroines are equally strong and good. They don’t need saved, but they need love. And in their strength, humor and trials, we get a wonderful story. Arlene is dealing with chronic pain and while I love that it’s part of who she is, it isn’t all she is. She is so much more.
I love these characters and can’t wait to see who is next to find their forever love. I highly recommend Hundred to One, it’s everything I hoped for! Love, hot sex, mystery, thrills, and more hot sex!
This book is a nail biter, I laughed, cried and really did bite my nails. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I do believe that Freya Barker knock it out of the park with this one. Arlene and Seb, what can I say. They have their flaws, but doesn't everyone? And they are two tough cookies. And they fought through until the end. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Hundred to One was yet another undiscovered beauty of a book for me, as a reviewer or reader it seems to be my lot in life to unearth these phenomenal series’ midway through the entire saga having been released and often it spoils the entertainment element when you have to go back and relearn certain events about already established characters, thankfully with Cedar Trees I was able to get to know a bit about the side characters that obviously had their own show previously and still feel like I had a lot to catch up on should I want to venture back and read book one (which I went and bought straight after reading this one). What I loved so wholeheartedly about this book was the characterisation, the thought process and inner struggles and hidden insecurities of each person. There is so much depth and vulnerability lurking underneath their hardened exteriors that when Freya peels back their facades the reader is treated to two remarkable heroes. What you see on the outside is not what you get on the in. Seb may be an ex-con with tattoos and a rather stoic and stern outlook and Arlene might have a sharper tongue than my granny on vodka at Xmas time but with enough past tragedies and unfathomable pain to last a lifetime, the two of them wages a battle against the odds for a chance at love and redemption and peace. Freya manages to work her literary magic in constructing two very believable and lovable protagonists whilst engaging the reader in a sort of mystery stalker-drama with plenty of thrilling, often emotional moments but still manages to break up the angst and heavy material with class and subtlety in the form of some witty banter and terrific dialogue from the supporting characters and Arlene’s sass and sarcasm. The only way I can some up Hundred to One is by saying this; it has a clever engaging array of characters with two well-rounded heroes to focus on. It has a sterling storyline that although easy to follow and pick up on does follow on from book one but it has everything to keep your eyes glued to the page from beginning to end and has you pondering and thinking about events in it long after you’ve read the words ‘the end’. The heroes may be in their late thirties and early forties which seems to be a bit of a rare occurrence in today’s books but the sex scenes are scintillating and erotic and Seb is just a book boyfriend waiting to be discovered and adored whilst his female counterpart Arlene is a fierce, strong and resilient survivor that every woman should want to get to know. If you haven’t read this series yet I urge you to go out now and grab the first book and start delving into the lives of Cedar Trees’ misunderstood misfit individuals, you will not regret it.
Not too bad! I had the opportunity to review this book enjoyed it very much. I didn't read the first book so I went into this blind so to like this book as much as I did says alot about this author and I will definitely be going back to read book 1. So here's the synopsis:
Like I said before I loved that I could read this book and kind of know what happened in book 1 to keep me going. I also appreciated the our heroine isn't the typical tiny sample size, push over model. This chick is sassy, ballsy and funny. She gives as good as she gets and even though she is tough on the outside she is all mush on the inside, she loves and she loves hard. The drama that this woman manages to get entangled in is what had me on the edge of my seat like WTF how can so much happen to this one person and they not break? I guess it helps she has a tough best friend and sexy as hell Sebastian watching her back. Seb is a gentle giant...I fell immediately in love with him and although he isn't on my book boyfriend list he can definitely be a book hook up buddy. I like by BBF young and hung..I'm a smutty old cougar I know LOL! The love that slowly develops between Seb and Arlene is so sweet and special. It wasn't a love at first sight type of deal and honestly the way he even came into her life is totally on the creeper side but once you recognize his motives you will forgive the tattooed hottie. So 4 out of 5 stars for part 2 in this series.
After reading the first novel in this series, I fell in love with the authors writing style and became a HUGE fan!
In this second novel , we get Arlene and Seb’s story. I cannot emphasize enough how much I loved them! Although their stories are both sad…they are not victims! I loved that!
Arlene is a totally kick-ass character! She has strength, determination and courage which is why I want to be like her when I grow up!
Seb …what can I say about Seb?!!! Gorgeous, tattooed and he cooks! From the way he is described, you would think he is typical bad boy! But he is sensitive …but not to the point of being a sissy! But he is also a man’s man! Protective and sexy!
What makes the lovely Freya’s writing so wonderful, is that her characters are real and flawed. Not perfect or size 0!
This book made me laugh out loud, cry ugly tears and hold my breath!
I give this 5 stars and recommend this to anyone looking for a great novel about real people and how love can come to those at any age or size!
**I was given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review**
Audiobook: Narrators – Tanya Eby and Noel Harrison
This narration was a perfect fit for these two mature characters. I enjoyed everything about this performance as it pulled me further into the story – more so than reading alone.
I loved getting Arlene and Seb’s story! Arlene has definitely had some hard, bad, nightmarish times and recent events have only added to them. I knew going in that Seb was going to be just the one to help her, despite her tough exterior, but I never knew what she had hidden. He was everything perfect for the job and I loved how he took such care of her body and heart.
This is filled with lots of drama and action even as it’s sprinkled with humor and iced over with some hot steamy times that made me quite envious. With a few twists I never expected and so many secondary characters that added to the story, I once more fell in love with the magic this author gives us with her mature characters and plots.
Are you looking for a new twist on love and romance? Second chances? Do you believe its never to late to find happiness even though your bady aches and your soul crys out for that special someone? Then gueas what, Freya Barker delivers all this in her Cedar Tree series, Hundred to One. Arlene is a mature, hard working woman. I loved her spunky attidude and her out spoken ways. Her tough outer shell helps protect her fragile heart. We see her face phsyical and emotional pain with courage and amazing strength. I love that about her. Seb is a man who wants to protect and love Arlene. He knows her past and gives her the room she needs. I love that he is not perfect. He is real. The two together bring out the best in each other. This was a wonderful story of trust, love and acceptance. The characters are real and I could relate to Arlene and Seb. Freya Barker created an awesome place to visit.
This series is incredible! I am loving all of these characters and their relationships. I love that the author is including the previous characters and that we get to see how their relationship is progressing. Arlene and Seb have been fighting their attraction for a while. Once again we have older characters that have long pasts that they have to get through. Arlene is also getting through a fresh trauma. Seb is determined to help her through it. Her past comes back to haunt her, and Gus is on the case. I love Arlene’s character. She is such a strong woman. I love her sailor mouth too! She just tells it like it is. If you don’t like it, tough. She doesn’t sugarcoat. Her and Seb are great together. They have such opposite personalities that they just fit. I love a man that loves a woman for who she is and not what she looks like. This series of books gives me hope for men everywhere! Reviewed for FMR Book Grind
So I had a hard time staying with this book, I think I enjoyed book one more. I really liked Arlene and Seb especially Arlene she is one tough cookie. The thing I love most about this series is that the couples are older and they are real people. They either have a disability or physical ailment and it is great to read about them living a full life.
I'd been looking forward to 'Hundred to One' since I put 'Slim to None' down.
I really liked Arlene when we met her in book 1. She was a tough cookie, bloody minded and determined, but we got the feeling that there was much more to her - and boy, was there ever!! Given the hand life had dealt her she was still strong and independent. Through the book she faces some pretty difficult problems ~ things she thought were dead and buried rear their ugly head ~ we find out just what she's had to put up with and endure in her past and we see the wall she's built around her start to crack and crumble.
Seb, oh lordy, that man..... I want a Seb for myself!!!! He was a kinda background character in book #1. We got a glimpse of a protective streak when it came to Arlene but in 'Hundred to One' we find out just how he feels about her. Seb hasn't had the easiest life either and he's got a secret that we're not entirely sure about for a lot of the read. Rough, tough but with a lovely heart, he's fab!!!
Both have a past, both have been hurt and are a bit broken, but together they might just be able to make themselves whole.
Just like Slim To None, one of my favourite things was the realness of the characters. I could identify with them - they've lived through difficult times, have secrets, health issues, hangups and aren't picture perfect, but for me, they are perfect characters. As with the previous book and characters, the sex, when it happened was hot, steamy and realistic!
There was action, drama and suspense that kept me hooked. I loved the interaction between Seb & Arlene. We caught up again with Emma and Gus (another fab couple). The friendship, chat and relationship between the 2 lead females in the series is very real and believable.
Freya has got a wee gem of a series on her hands and I can't wait to read more about the Cedar Tree gang!!!
So, Seb works for Arlene in her diner and he had the hots for the boss. The boss, Arlene, has the hots for the hot fine ass cook, Seb. Seb, is in Cedar Tree because he wants to protect Arlene. He had a purpose for arriving in town after doing time in prison. He was Arlene's exes cell mate and he felt the need to protect her.
Well, protect her he will. Arlene is your typical strong and independent woman, which I love!!!! She has been through so much pain and suffering that she knows how to handle everything that is tossed at her. She is really a strong and amazing heroine, inspiring. She has developed feelings for Seb but she just doesn't know his full story. What will she do when she finally finds out who he is?
These two have an attraction that is strong, real and so beautiful. I loved reading how Seb treats Arlene. How he is always so loving, adoring and respectful of Arlene. She finally caves and allows a man to love her the way she deserves. The way she should be treated, watching them finally open up to each other is emotional. They are both middle aged and so see them finally finding their other half is beautiful. We usually read about twenty-somethings finding their HEA not middle aged couples. This is part of the reason why I love this book.
I highly recommend you read book one of this series. Hundred to One does talk about the back story of Arlene and a horrible and event that took place in her recent past. We also learn about Seb and his live before prison all of their past events have brought them to where they are now.
But...this book is a mystery and some events do take place and people do things to harm and attempt to harm Arlene, Seb and some of the other characters. This book had me engaged and I hope you all are too. I can't wait for more from Freya Barker.
When reading Slim to None (Cedar Tree #1) you get a pretty good picture of Arlene and her strong defiant nature. I liked her then but I love her now.
Arlene comes completely to life. We now understand the whys to Arlene feelings that she cannot be nurturing but she is in her own way. Her gruff, snarky exterior is a way to protect her from letting people get to close. But, when someone sneaks in she has a heart of gold and loves fiercely. Willing to protect them will all she has. She is far from perfect in her eyes but she gives you all she has.
In walks mister tall, sexy, inked ex-con Seb. From a distance he comes daily to do a job, while secretly being there to make sure nothing happens to this strong woman. He never expected to find himself attracted to her. We pretty quickly see that Seb has very deep feelings for Arlene and will stop at nothing to protect her. Seb has many secrets himself that just make you love this man even more.
This story will grab you and hold you until the last word. With each event that happens, it gives you a little more insight to the characters. I love that even though the focus is on the main characters you still feel very connected with the others of the book. Freya actually makes you feel like a regular at the diner getting to know everyone from your visits for some friendly service and yummy peach pie.
I cannot wait for some more Cedar Tree excitement.

Suspense at its best! I had the pleasure to beta read this book and I have no words to describe it! It had me sitting at the edge of my seat from page 1 and all the way through the end! This book is the story of Arlene and Seb, whom we met in Slim to None! Arlene is this kick ass woman who's been through hell in her life. She finds herself threatened yet again, but this time she has a silent force on her side... Seb! Seb, sensing the danger Arlene is in, steps up and decides to take matters in his own hands, in order to protect Arlene... Their srory is fascinating... The danger is present at every page... Their banter is priceless... Throughout the book, I found myself crying from laughter and crying from their heartbreaking stories.... Freya is a master of suspense... I love her writing style and I am in awe of the way she hadles all the elements that make such a book, Oh-my-God-I can't-believe-this-is-happening, AWESOME!!! I would read anything she writes and I am definitely looking forward to more in this series! An EXCELLENT book...
Another hit by this author. When I started this series, I binge read all four of them in less than 48 hours. This series is absolutely amazing. They are romance with enough steam to make panties wet and enough suspense to keep you guessing until the end.
This is Arlene and Seb's story. Arlene was one ball of fire that was fierce, sassy, and a take charge kind of woman. And Seb, sweet Seb, was the softer side for Arlene. But sweet Seb was also totally alpha that will have you swooning and your panties melting. I was rooting for these two even when it seemed almost impossible.
The Cedar Tree series which I have just read back to back is outstanding. Freya Barker is just crazy ass talented and I’m totally fucking overexcited with my discovery and wanting the world to know, this means in my usual fashion the profanity when excited goes into overdrive, leaving me swearing like a sailor with tourettes, however as her writing is so flawless and overwhelmingly real – whilst also being hot as fuck (see I told you, profanity and excitement go hand in hand!) – I also want to wax lyrical and eloquent.
So where does that leave me?
A motherfucker of a poem?
Possibly.
Because I want to shout, put it on billboards, skywrite it and advertise far and wide, share with the world albeit in a colourful fashion that Freya Barker has a gift, writes real, heart-warming and emotional, funny, hot books with characters whose banter, friendships and stories will have you rooting for them, getting serious feels for them, purchasing new batteries for toys because oh boy did I mention HOT as FUCK, and all while effortlessly throwing in suspense, intrigue, fabulous funny sarcasm and humour. She dares to go where few authors will risk, writing older characters with health issues, disabilities, the reality and the fantasy seamlessly intertwined and breathtakingly beautiful. I remember when I finished my first Kristen Ashley immediately downloading the rest of the series, devouring them one after the other while the family took care of themselves because I was on a mission, déjà vu for Freya Barker. I have no clue why she is not more well-known or why this series, especially Slim to None, is not a huge bestseller because for me they were a special read, the author an awesome discovery and I had a real ‘oh my fucking god’ moment when I finished the fourth book Clean Lines because, apart from KA, not many have written a series where I literally could not choose my favourite, where every single book boyfriend was ‘The One’ and every single heroine I wanted to be or wanted as a bestie, all abso-fucking-lutely fabulous, the fantasy escape we read romance for but so bloody real. And yeah I’m gushing, I’m also stalking and pimping her crazy talented ass out, much as my blog partner-in-crime has done for some time, because she needs that one tiny little touch of luck to put these books where they belong…
……………………………………
So let’s start with Slim to None, with my gorgeous Gus and sassy Emma whose start is the amazingly steamy “porn” phone call (I say “porn” firmly tongue in cheek by the way, check out the one star “porm” review!!) which personally I thought was hilarious, hot and worked for me!
“Sure thing. We’ve only known each other for what? Three, four days?” Forcing out a chuckle, she finished. “Just fun and games, right?” She could feel his growl behind her. “Fuck no, woman.” He bit out. “You know it, and I know it. We’ll sort it, but now is not the time. You’re exhausted and I have a team to set up. So, when I say ‘sort it’, I mean I’ll have myself up in your face, and under your skin and into your body so deep, you won’t be able to doubt my intentions.”
Oh Lordy I’m having a flush just reading that quote! Gus is all man, alpha male written with a vulnerability, warmth and humour that you will fall into a puddle at his feet, worshipping at the dream that is Gus. Emma is so strong and sassy, refusing to let life get her down, choosing to live and enjoy even with health limitations, without giving spoilers let’s just say the thoughtfulness shown by Gus for making Emma comfortable while still being sexually adventurous was all kinds of hot I wasn’t expecting. The chemistry between these two when it does explode is so well done that it’s seamless, the physical and emotional so well intertwined with sassy humour and banter that you almost miss, through the sheer panty melting hot scenes, the friendship and emotional attachment that is developing between them. This introduction to the Cedar Tree series is totally addictive because while being captivated by Gus and Emma, their intimacy and relationship and the friendships of the secondary cast all merges together to create a world I didn’t want to end.
……………………………………
Hundred to One is the second outing, and features Arlene and Seb. A very different couple yet again Ms Barker managed to engage me with 100% attention, devouring this story.
“There is nothing to miss – there is too much to take in. Do you realize how unique it is to find what we have? With our backgrounds, both of our fucked up histories? We were a hundred to one odds. Who could have imagined that you and I would hit it off, let alone fall in love. I don’t want perfection… you don’t want perfection, we both want real and this is as real as it gets. Wrinkles, blemishes, nose hair and hang-ups… All of it.”
Arlene is just bloody fabulous, I adored her, strong willed, independent and fiercely loyal she was a joy to read, her altercations and interactions had me laughing out loud, Emma and Arlene could be me and my bestie talking! Seb was a bit of a sleeper for me, Gus and Caleb I was an immediate take me now! As Hundred to One progressed I was yeah I’ll take Seb as well. Dibs. They are a perfect match, I didn’t see it at first but as their pasts unfold and their relationship picks up speed then for me it was a real life fairytale. I don’t want to give spoilers but the ring is perfection and I’m fanning my face thinking of cold storage!

The overwhelming factor for me that makes all of these such an enjoyable read is the amazing banter between all the characters, primary and secondary. The affection, humour and love shines through, the teasing, flirting, arguing, dirty sexy talk and insults flung around through these books make them a pleasure to experience. Like every family, whether blood or choice, they will frustrate and exasperate you – you will be rooting for them while screaming at them!
Kindle and the indie writing world gave me Kristen Ashley and Madeline Sheehan, I now add Freya Barker to the “I don’t need the cover or blurb because it’s an automatic one click on the strength of the author alone” list. There is no better compliment I can give to Ms Barker other than Thank You, you have created characters that will remain in my heart and memories for a long time to come, an outstanding series.
The Cedar Tree series seems to get better book after book. We are introduced to the "tell it like it is" Arlene & her diner's cook Seb in Cedar Tree #1. I knew that their time for a book of their own was coming because the mutual admiration they shared for one another was evident.
Arlene & Seb both have mysterious pasts that have both have not complete shared with one another. Their pasts, even though the may not know it in the beginning, has a lot to do with how their future will progress. Arlene may no in her heart that she has an emotional & physical attraction for Seb, but he tough as nails exterior, horrid ex, and her most recent kidnapping has kept Seb at arm's length. Seb's protective nature, loyalty, and straight forward nature will not let Arlene hide from him anymore.
This book is filled with suspense, mystery, lust, and some humor. I couldn't put it down for a second. I highly suggest that you read Cedar Tree #1 first, but I swear you won't be disappointed with either.
I would have given this story four stars at least. I love this author so much but the nickname the lead male character, Sebastian (Seb) gives his girlfriend, Arlene( lead female) had me out of sorts. It’s a dog’s name and that is all I’ll say. You will remember Seb and Arlene from the first book if you read them in order which I recommend. I liked the story of these two heartbroken individuals and how they find love, joy, and strength from each other. Arlene can be a bit much with the attitude but there are times she brought tears to my eyes. I loved Seb even though he gave that horrible nickname. What were you thinking Ms. Freya!!!! Can’t wait to read the next book.
I've been uber picky recently about my books. This series is awesome. The stories are great. The writing is very good. The books are LONG so there is no rushing through the story. The narration is spot on. I thought I wasn’t a fan of Tanya Eby but she killed it reading these books. Noel Harrison also did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life. Did I have a favorite book in the series… nope, they were all great.
It's been a while since I couldn't put a book down and read the entire thing in one day. Once I started Hundred to One, I had a hard time pulling myself away from the story. I probably should have read the first book in the series but Ms. Barker does an excellent job of offering insight that helps a reader fill in the back story. The story is quick paced and the characters are real. There are no billionaires or models, just regular people who are past the new adult phase of their lives but still manage an active sex life and connect on an emotional level.
I love strong heroines and Arlene is as strong as they come. She has dealt with a great deal at the hands of an abusive spouse and more recently at the hands of a vengeful attacker. While her demeanor is tough as nails, her cook, Seb, sees through her to the vulnerable woman within. The couple has chemistry that is off the charts and while Arlene fears surrendering her heart to another man, Seb is patient enough to let her realize they belong together. Secrets abound in this book, for both Seb and Arlene, but they play well into the storyline and move the action forward.
Seb is mostly the strong silent type but his devotion and need to protect Arlene are endearing. When he does open his heart and speaks from it, no woman could resist such a man. He is the total alpha male: hot, sexy, dominant and protective. His devotion to his sister is heartwarming as is love for Arlene. The book has many twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing as to how all of the plot points connect together. The characters interact well together and the banter is so natural, I could hear similar conversations with my own friends. I will definitely be reading the rest of the Cedar Tree series and recommend that you do the same.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
We met Arlene and Seb in Slim to None. Now it is time to hear their story. Freya again writes a tale of two people who struggle with everyday life challenges. They are heroes in how they deal with difficulties.
Arlene has been traumatized by what happened in Slim To None. Seb is trying to be helpful while dealing with his own issues. There are secrets Seb is keeping and he needs time to slay his own demons. Seb is this broody man who keeps to himself, but Arlene brings out the protective side of him. When the past comes back to haunt Arlene, Seb will have the biggest fight of his life keeping her emotionally healthy and safe.
Freya brings to light a serious issue and gives the reader realistic emotions. I do warn you that if abuse is a trigger for you than please be cautious. Freya doesn't go into graphic detail of such abuse, you just know the basics of what happened. Freya doesn't Hollywoodize such atrocious behavior from the villains in the story.
There are some serious surprises that will keep you on your toes. Some of Slim to None comes back for a visit in this book. I suggest you read the series in order. That way you understand the pretense of what is happening.
I loved how the story ended. It gave meaning to what makes a family.
All I can say is WOW! Couldn't put this book down. Loved everything about it. 2 people like Arlene and Seb who basically has been to hell and back, both as stubborn as a mule finally realizes they are meant to be. I fell in love with both of them. Again Freya you haven't let me down. On to book 3.
