Working her first case as deputy sheriff with her ex-boyfriend, Detective Cord Goodwin, Kendall McKade is determined to track the kidnappers—even if it makes her a target. Teaming up threatens to rekindle Cord and Kendall’s relationship, but first they must solve a life-threatening mystery.

'You can't claim responsibility for someone's death without also claiming to have power over life and death. You don't have that. Only God does.'
Susan Sleeman takes her readers for quite a thrilling ride on this last in her McKade's Law series . In my opinion, this is the best! This one features Kendall McKade, who is on her first case as a deputy sheriff in Lost Creek, Texas. A missing senior citizen turns out to be the aunt of her ex boyfriend, Cord Goodwin. When she surprises an intruder at the woman's house and is hurt, Cord shows up looking for his aunt and finds her unconscious on the floor. Cord now must find his aunt, keep Kendall safe and also mend his relationship with his new orphaned nephew, who he is adopting. Kendall broke up with Cord because he was so controlling, but now she must depend on his for someone is targeting her.
Sleeman is at her best here, giving us more than one mystery, springing surprises along the way and teaching us a very valuable spiritual lesson. Those wonderful lessons is something she does in every book and it's quite good here. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and highly recommend it. Now I look forward to what Susan Sleeman will bring her fans next. It's sure to be good!
*My thanks to the publisher and author for a preview copy of this book. A positive review was not required and the opinions expressed here are entire my own.
A really enjoyable short mystery with a fast-paced hunt for a missing senior and a second-chance romance between two law-enforcement officers. I really liked the characters and the small-town ranch life. Definitely going to be reading more of this series, even though it stands well alone.
Well, this is a sad state of affairs -- we've reached the final installment of the McKade Law series and I'm a tad disgruntled over that. Seems I'm reading a lot of 'last books' lately and I don't take to change very well -- especially when it comes to having to say goodbye to the kind of larger than life heroes and heroines that make up the McKade clan.
Sleeman has done an incredible job of fleshing out these characters and sharing the family dynamics in each novel -- though they all read easily as standalones. But I really felt at home at the McKade's ranch and was ready to move into one of their guest cabins so I could keep an eye on all the sibling shenanigans not to mention the weddings and children! Excuse the sulking, but that's the way it goes when an author rips my fictional world out from under me. :-)
Okay -- enough whining -- on to the good stuff -- which is this whole story! The suspense was a puzzler with lots of interesting police procedural tidbits that brought realistic details to the painstaking casework. With enough plot twists to keep an armchair sleuth happily absorbed.
And the romance backstory has a lot of grit and depth -- a fledgling relationship doomed by bad timing and poor judgment. Now they are forced to work together when Cord's aunt disappears and Kendall heads up the investigation. The attraction sizzles to life again though it seems like the timing is off this second time around as well. History is in danger of repeating itself unless Cord and Kendall can learn from their mistakes and embrace the future with renewed hope.
A beautiful celebration of family wrapped up in a stellar romantic suspense.
This concluding book in the McKade family law series makes readers long for more. I have enjoyed the suspense novels with these characters in starring roles. They hold readers’ interest and keep them guessing. This one is no exception. Deputy Kendall McKade gets involved in a case with a missing woman, who just happens to be the aunt of her former boyfriend, Cord Goodwin, a Houston police detective. Can they work together to solve this crime? Will they find his aunt in time or is it already too late? This exciting story will tease you with the surprises thrown in along the way. I’m sorry to see the series end. I received a book from the author. All opinions are my own.
Kendall has always tried to prove herself more capable than what her brothers or dad see her as and getting the detective job is a good starting point. This is the first test of what could be a new career for her. She's competent and level-headed, if only others around her would quit treating her like the little sister & girl they still view her as. Going off half-cocked puts her in danger when she see's the abductors face. Ex-boyfriend Cord becomes concerned when he can't get a hold of his Aunt Eve. Driving from Houston to her property, he runs into Kendall knocked out cold on her kitchen floor and his aunt nowhere in sight. After the shock of seeing each other wears off, they must work together to find his Aunt before it's too late! Add to the mix, his own nephew whom he has guardianship of, and the danger factor ramps up. Can they find enough clues to rescue Eve before it's too late?
Definitely a page turner and plenty of thrilling action to keep the story moving! It left me trying to piece the clues together along with Kendall and Cord. As for the romance, there were reasons they never made a go of it years ago and trying to work past those feelings is a challenge they aren't sure they are up to. He has plenty of guilt and self-blame to overcome, and she has a drive to prove herself that often distorts her logic and puts her in danger. It's interesting to watch the character growth in these two. Learning to let go of things and place them in the Lord's hands isn't always easy, but must be done in order to move on in life. These two learn that lesson the hard way it seems! Another great suspense and riveting conclusion to the McKade family series. I will miss this clan of law enforcement agents, they became like my own! I can't wait to see what's next from Sleeman, it's always a guaranteed thrilling suspense story.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions are my own. *
TAKEN IN TEXAS (McKade Law # 4) is a thriller! Susan Sleeman ends this series with a BANG! Each of these books can be read as a stand-alone but needs to be read in sequential order to best understand the flow of the family and the growth of the characters. The McKade Family is unique that almost all of the family members are involved in some type of Law Enforcement. Even their Grandfather is a Retired Sheriff. Each of them has a special skill set and they usually are backing up a family member when they go on a call. This also means they know each other’s personal business - sometimes way too much!
Sleeman delivers a fantastic finish to the series as she leads readers on a thriller of an adrenaline rush. Deputy Sheriff Kendall McKade makes a simple stop for a Wellness Check, meets a madman wielding a rolling pin with her name on it and is rescued by Cord Goodwin, the Lawman who broke her heart. Kendall and Cord team up to find his missing Aunt while fighting off their growing mutual attraction. Even the safest places become vulnerable against a killer intent on settling his score with Kendall. The relentless pursuit is intense and the ending will completely take you by surprise! I was provided an ARC by the author. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence. I have preordered a copy of this book for my own personal library.
I will certainly miss the McKade clan! They were a great family! It was so nice to read Kendall's story though. Kendall wants to be a detective and this is her first case. An elderly woman is missing and it's up to Kendall to find her....too bad it's the aunt of her ex-boyfriend, Cord Goodwin! When things didn't work out with them, he moved away and Kendall hasn't seen him since so imagine her surprise when Kendall gets clocked by a wooden rolling pin and knocked out and as she comes to, the first person she sees is Cord!! Not what she expects or wants!! It soon becomes evident that Cord's aunt has been kidnapped and he's NOT leaving town until she's found so he's going to work right along Kendall's side to find her! Just great..... Kendall's family never did understand why they broke up so they welcome Cord right back into their lives! Oh, and Cord now is raising his teenaged nephew! There's a lot of action going on with the case AND at home! You'll definitely want to be reading this finale in the McKade series! It wraps up nicely and is very enjoyable!
My thoughts: TAKEN IN TEXAS is the fourth book in the McKade Law series, but it easily stands alone. Fans will want to read the other books in the series to find out the other stories though.
I figured Eve was alive, based on the title, but had to keep reading to find out who took her and why. I did not guess who did it, and the story held my attention. I loved how Eve kept her faith even during the trial and was able to minister to Cord about bad things that had happened in his life.
A very sweet story that will hold your interest. Not as scary as some Love Inspired Suspense.
A deputy sheriff with her ex boyfriend track kidnappers. Kendall and Cord once were an item. They broke up. Now they must work together to find his aunt who has been kidnapped. An okay story. A little slow.
(violence toward women, violence, theft, blackmail, kidnapping, bad cops) This is the second Love Inspired Suspense I have read in the past week, and I am beginning to wonder if they have "staff" write them. This is awful. (1) It isn't realistic. For example, the police officer enters a dark building and looks for a suspect--without turning on the lights. When she spots him, she doesn't shoot him, . Later, when the suspect . All the bungling that the police do makes me think the author watched the keystone cops for research--I mean who lets someone with a head injury drive herself to the hospital? (2) The author can't remember what she wrote. For example, (3) The characters were one dimensional. I felt no sympathy for the leading man. He supposedly became controlling because he forgot and left a gate open as a child. To me, that would make him feel as if he shouldn't be in charge of anything. Plus it is as if the author had set her own schedule for developing his back story: 2 paragraphs about how he loves/misses/is worried about the leading lady, 2 paragraphs about how he is worried about his aunt, 2 paragraphs about how he feels guilty about his family repeat ad infinitum. I also didn't care about the leading lady. She admits she is not the most qualified for detective and that this is her first case as detective, but she refuses to turn it over to more experienced people. Her story is 2 paragraphs thinking about how attracted she is to the leading man, 2 paragraphs about how the leading man is to controlling, and then 2 paragraphs trying to justify she should be the detective in charge on the case (despite her lack of qualifications).
TAKEN IN TEXAS by Susan Sleeman is the fourth book in the McKade Law series. It’s the story of Kendall McKade. Deputy Kendall works under her father, who is the sheriff, and is working to get promoted to detective.
The story starts off with Kendall doing a wellness check which quickly turns to a missing person and an assault on a police officer when she is blindsided by an intruder in the home and Eve Smalley is nowhere to be found. Enter out of town Detective Cord Goodwin, who unbeknown to Kendall, is Eve’s nephew and just happens to be Kendall’s ex-boyfriend. They team up to find Eve, but they both seem to feel the original sparks intensified. They will have to work together, but both pull back keeping their emotions in check. It didn’t work then and couldn’t work now either – could they?
Kendall’s heart goes out to Cord when she finds out about his terrible losses. She sees the difficult situation he’s in trying to raise his nephew he’s in the process of adopting. Lucas is 12 going on 22 having had his life turned upside down lashing out at Cord with the brunt of his frustrations. Kendall steps in offering support in the way she knows – her faith and love.
The way Susan Sleeman tells this exiting story of the rekindled romance between Kendall and Cord and how they work together to solve the crime of his missing aunt in a excitingly gripping way will have you sitting on the edge of your seat turning the pages while trying to figure out whodunit only to get it wrong more than once. It’s a book full of surprises that reminds you of the old saying “It’s not over until the fat lady sings.” Just don’t think it’s headed to the happily ever after until the very last page! I enjoyed the author’s attention to detail on the police details and procedures which made it informing and realistic. I love the way she works hope, love and faith as a running thread throughout the book.
I highly recommend TAKEN IN TEXAS to anyone that loves a fantastic suspense story, an exciting romance story, or just a great all round Christian story. It can definitely be read as a standalone book. If like me now, you will want to check out the stories of the rest of the amazing McKade family by reading the rest of the books in this series. I know I will be!
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Taken in Texas. This is the fourth book in the McKade Law Series. I am thrilled to receive Susan's books. I'd been looking forward to getting it in the mail. I'm not sure how she keeps coming up with ideas for her great stories; so many authors just put out cookie cutter stories and you always know who did it and what will happen next. Susan's not like that and she always has her faith woven into her stories. This story is well written, action packed, and full of lovable characters. They are so real. I love all the McKades.
Deputy Sheriff Kendall McKade is trying to earn the detective's position that will soon open when her brother is voted into the sheriff's position. Her dad, the sheriff wants to retire. She goes on a welfare check on a seventy-five year old lady. Her nephew couldn't get a hold of her. When she arrives the house is dark; the nephew says she never goes out at night, her car is still here, she sees a man in the shadows inside, the back door is unlocked, she enter, and is attacked. The first thing she sees when she come to is her ex-boyfriend bending over her. Just what she needs, not.
Detective Cord Goodwin comes to check on his aunt. He has called for a welfare check on her but so far no one has notified him about what they found. He arrives only to find Kendall lying on the kitchen floor, a rolling pin near by and a huge egg on her forehead. He makes in an officer down call to the station and then looks around. No sign of his aunt. Who would kidnap a seventy year old? This was Kendall's first investigation and he was going to be a part of it. After all he was the one with the experience.
A journey to find a little old lady. Kendall had left him because of his controlling ways. Can they work together when it is really her case. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. You might not have kidnappers after you but you do have an enemy; he is out to steal, kill, and destroy, Jesus came to give you life and that more abundantly. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.
Kendall McKade has worked hard to become a detective in her small town. The job isn't hers yet, but she has just landed a case that will help her prove that she is capable of holding that position. Kendall is called to make a welfare check on an elderly woman. When she arrives at Eve's home Eve is missing and Kendall is ambushed by an intruder. When she awakes after being clobbered Cord Goodwin has arrived. He is Eve's nephew and had called in for the welfare check. Cord and Kendall have a past together that did not end well, will they be able to put aside their old feelings for each other and find Eve before it is too late?
Cord is a detective in Houston, he and his nephew have suffered too much loss recently, they do not want to lose Eve as well. Can Kendall help the two navigate their touchy relationship and can both Cord and Kendall learn to allow God to be in control of situations instead of themselves?
This is the last of the McKade Law series. They will be missed let me tell you! I think this may have been my favorite though. I loved how strong Kendall was, but also mature enough to realize when her life was in danger she needed to let others help her. I also loved her caring nature, she's a hugger! Sometimes that is all you can do for someone, give them a hug and let them know you are there. I liked that about her character. Author Susan Sleeman always captures the readers attention from the very first pages of her books to the very end. The suspense ran throughout the story, not overdone, but enough to move the story along and keep the reader invested in the outcome. TAKEN IN TEXAS was exciting and moving. I love how the characters faith is interspersed throughout the story and how both Kendall and Cord mature in their trust in the Lord and learn to hand over their control to Him. An excellent ending to a series that I totally enjoyed!
Susan Sleeman definitely has a way with words in this Love Inspired Suspense novel, which is a bit shorter than a typical novel. I enjoy how she ratchets up the suspense without having so many incidents in a row that it seems unlikely to happen in the real world. She also has a knack for a romance that is sweet but not over the top. Kendall was my favorite character, as I’m sure a female deputy is probably pretty hard to pull off, but she is a very realistic and relatable character. The wounded Cord definitely has some issues to get past, but it’s clear that his life has changed dramatically and he is definitely taking a second look at his old flame.
Ms. Sleeman has the best combination of romance and suspense and I highly recommend her. The novel kept me turning pages and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their interaction. Unfortunately, this one seems to be the last in a series that I hadn’t been aware of. I definitely need to go back and read more of this series!

We are back with the McKade clan, and this time the story belongs to hardworking deputy Kendall McKade, who is doing all she can to becoming a detective in the near future. She’s a strong minded, relentless woman trying to make it in a man’s world, especially when her father is the Sheriff and her brother’s and relatives are all in law enforcement. When she does a wellness call, little did she know her life would change forever. Not only does she encounter an intruder, but the woman missing is the aunt of her former boyfriend, Cade. When he comes to town to check on his aunt, these two end up working together to find her. Will they find the aunt? Will they rekindle their relationship and will Cord find his way back into trusting God with his life and choices? It’s a plot filled with suspense , twist and turns, hope and romance. A reminder that we need to trust God to help us not only on the easy things in life, but especially when we are going through sadness and losses. It’s a bittersweet moment when you know you have read a great series, but will have to say goodbye to the characters you have come to love. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
3.5 stars "Something was wrong here. Terribly wrong."
As Deputy Kendall McKade conducts a welfare check on an unresponsive member of her community, she never expects to become a victim, or to come face-to-face with Detective Cord Goodwin. The now missing woman, Eve Smalley, just happens to be Cord's aunt and after being unable to reach her, Cord has driven over to the home himself. . . . . finding Kendall on the floor of the residence following a painful altercation with an intruder.
Six years. It has been that long since Kendall has seen Cord; after their break-up, Cord left their local department and moved to Houston, but it seems that time and distance has not erased the unmistakable current of attraction between them. Perhaps they had been too hasty? Now is not the time to be reminiscing; a woman is missing and they have a job to do. Find Eve Smalley.
Kendall and Cord have a lot to learn about God's timing in their lives, and between the pages of "Taken in Texas" they discover that God has a wonderful way of working out the details.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The opinions stated are entirely my own.
When I pick up a Susan Sleeman book, I know I’m in for a gripping, intriguing read. Taken in Texas starts out strong with a missing woman, a feisty and courageous heroine, and a strong-willed, take-charge hero who just happens to still have feelings for said heroine. I enjoyed the interaction between Kendall McKade and Cord Goodwin as they tried to dance around and control their lingering feelings for each other.
Sleeman’s strong background in law enforcement research shines through this story as her knowledge gives the tale authenticity. The creative twists and turns in the book add a dimension of surprise and intrigue. Themes of forgiveness of self and others, importance of family, and trust in God are woven seamlessly throughout.
Although this is the last book in the McKade Law series, it can easily be read as a standalone story. It was an added bonus for me to see characters from the other books show up in this one. All in all, it’s a great conclusion to the McKade series. I would recommend this to those who enjoy clean Christian romantic suspense. 4 ½ stars rounded to 5.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. All opinions are my own.
This romantic suspense novel is an incredible adrenaline rush!
I loved this final visit to Trail’s End Ranch. It was great seeing what is going on with the main characters from the first 3 books now that their lives have settled down. I’m so happy that Kendall got her own story. She has been so helpful in the previous books. Now I know what happened that made her decide that she was going to remain single.
It was also wonderful getting to know Cord and his nephew Lucas. They are dealing with so much pain and heartache. They were definitely in need of the loving McKade family coming around them to help them deal with things.
The journeys that Kendall, Cord, and Lucas have to take to learn to let go of things and trust God were fantastic. I was able to learn some things along with them.
The plot of the mystery was thrilling. It kept me guessing throughout the book. I had to take a few breaks to calm down because I was so caught up in it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.
I really enjoyed the McKade family. Sorry to see the series end. To the author I think a couple of the cousins were single, maybe there is a chance we will see the McKade's again. Cord and Kendall McKade had fallen in love when they both were patrol cops but because of his controlling ways Kendall broke up with. He moved to Houston, because a detective and is now the guardian of his nephew. Cord has been trying to reach his aunt for days, he asked the local sheriff's office to do a welfare check, when he arrive at his aunt's house there is patrol car in the driveway the house is dark as he walk into the house he see a body on the floor it's his Kendall. Cord is beside himself his aunt is missing, Kendall is injured, he has lost all of the people he love. It's all his fault. Cord and Lucas is hurting the people they love most in the world is gone. Cord has to realize that he doesn't have the power over life and death, that is God's job. Wonderful story of rekindled love. This story has kidnapping, attempted murder, and blackmail.
Talk about a great ending to a series I will miss the McKade family but there are a few cousins that could use a story... I really enjoyed Kendall McKade and Cord's story. It was a great story started of with a mystery to solve. It also brought the dept, as it should, together to solve the crime. It brought Kendall's old love back in who had suffered great losses. It was a great blend of who had done it and a mystery of what had happened to Aunt Eve. I like how Susan drew you into the story. For I found myself curious as to what had happened. So it had me turning the pages looking for answers. I was surprised as to who the bad guy was. But it was surprising how Susan used a modern day problem for seniors in this story. It was great how the story ended and I look forward to her next series but I will miss this blended family!
When Kendall McKade does a welfare check on one of her county’s elderly citizens, she’s thrown back into the orbit of Cord Goodwin, the man whose heart she broke several years ago. Cord has experienced some tragedy in his life and is determined not to lose anyone else he cares about. Even though they are no longer together, Kendall falls in that category.
While the investigation and action surrounding what happened to Cord’s aunt are as spot-on and intense with plenty of surprises popping up for these two working together, the struggle Cord has with survivor’s guilt, his relationship with his nephew, and his relationship with God are what spoke loudest to me in Taken in Texas. Even better, both these characters experience an emotional and spiritual growth spurt during this book.
I’m going to miss the McKade family of tough law enforcement professionals, but the great thing about books is I can visit as often as I’d like.

Another winner for Susan Sleeman! I loved her newest "McKade Law" Love Inspired Suspense novel featuring Detective Cord Goodwin and Kendall McKade. Cord and Kendall are brought back together when Cord's aunt disappears and they suspect foul play. Kendall isn't deterred from doing her job and helping the people she loves even though her life is threatened and on the line multiple times.
This story has great action and suspense from beginning to end. I loved all the characters and reading more about the McKade family. I highly recommend this book and this series. Outstanding!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
This is book four in the McKade Law Series. Even though it is a stand alone book, the entire series is great and there is history you will miss.
Sleeman always does such a great job catching and keeping your interest. Her books are packed with suspense, mystery, family, forgiveness, Romance and Police type.
I fell in love with the entire McKade family and love getting reacquainted with all of them. This book will focus on the beautiful, determined deputy sheriff Kendall McKade. She feels she must prove herself all the time. When her first case brings her past to present will she be able to solve the missing person case, help the handsome Cord Goodwin and possibly find love again?
I loved all the McKade family stories, and I’m so sad this is the last one! I enjoyed Kendall’s and Cord’s journey together, both working on a mystery as well as facing struggles of the heart. They’ve both fought hard to be in control of their lives, but as the mystery spins out of control, they realize they have no control at all of what happens to someone they love. The theme of loss is huge as well. How do you handle unexpectedly losing someone you love? Why do some people die and others survive? Where is God in all of this? The conclusion of the mystery and the answers to their questions were both heartwarming and satisfying.
Kendall and Goodwin had worked together before, but it had ended when they had fallen for each other and that was against the policy of the department. Since Kendall's Father was sheriff they knew it was best to end their relationship and Goodwin move on to Houston. Now they were working together again searching for Goodwin's Aunt Eve, who has been abducted. Will their feelings surface again, will they stay professional, will they find Aunt Eve before it is too late?
Taken in Texas, by Susan Sleeman is a wonderful ending of a great series. I love how this author brings all the characters to life, lets me spend time with some of my favorites from other books, and gives a great mystery as well as storyline. Wonderful series – highly recommend to everyone, even readers who typically may not like suspenseful books. I was given this book for free in exchange for my honest review. No review was mandatory and all opinions are my own.
The last of the McKade Law Series, Taken in Texas by Susan Sleeman is a juxtaposition. On the one hand, there is the warmth and welcome emanated by the McKade clan. Sleeman describes the ranch and the extended family so well, one could almost hear the laughter and feel the family hugs. On the other hand, desperation seeps out as Cord and “rookie detective” Kendall McKade hit brick walls investigating his aunt’s disappearance.
Can Kendall and Cord forgive themselves and work confidently together despite their past to find his aunt before time is up, or will time expire for Kendall as well?
Sleeman’s action is always heart-pounding and unpredictable. What I didn’t foresee coming was the “false ending.” That left me reeling, as well as the characters.
If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, read Susan Sleeman. She defines it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my solely own.
With the last book in the McKade Law Series, Susan Sleeman keeps the momentum up with a story that will keep you guessing! Lots of twists and turns as you try to figure out what’s going to happen. You will definitely want to search out more books by Susan Sleeman. Find Taken In Texas here on Amazon.

Will Kendall and Cord be able to find his aunt before something bad happens? In order to do this they must put their past behind them to work together. Suspense from beginning to end that keeps you reading to find out what happens next. Hate it was the end of the series, but a great way to end it.
