Much better than I expected when I picked it up at a library book sale. Very well-written and includes lots of historical details.

surprisingly way more current than i thought it was going to be! though does wax poetic a bit in ye olde style a little here & there but well written, easy to read. author showed tremendous depth & breadth of knowledge dissecting the particular international personalities & politics & chance events behind 8 turning points in u.s. history -- revolutionary war, louisiana purchase, civil war, acquisition of texas, acquisition of alaska, & american declarations of war in WWI & II.
